Re: 07/08 Serie A thread.
Roberto Mancini comes face to face with his former club and hopes to extend Lazio’s crisis, as Inter continue their march on the Scudetto.
Mancio represented the Biancocelesti both as a player and Coach, but with his historic results at San Siro he is already in their Hall of Fame too. This is traditionally an exhilarating encounter and last season Inter only came out on top at the end of a 4-3 thriller, while Lazio have not won here since a 5-3 result in October 1998.
Considering Delio Rossi’s men are coming off three consecutive Serie A defeats to Milan, Roma and Fiorentina, their chances of getting some points here are relatively slim. Both sides also faced must-win midweek matches in the Champions League and a growing injury crisis.
Lazio lost Luciano Zauri during the game with Werder Bremen and he joined Stefano Mauri, Mobido Diakhite, Sebastiano Siviglia, Simone Del Nero and Goran Pandev on the sidelines, although the Macedonian hitman hopes to recover in time. After all, he started his career as an Inter youth product. To make matters worse, Gaby Mudingayi and Massimo Mutarelli are suspended, the latter sitting out a three-match ban for insulting the referee. Under-21 international Lorenzo De Silvestri should step into the left-back role, fresh from extending his contract until 2010, with Fabio Firmani pushing up to a midfield emergency position.
Inter have a larger squad than any other side in Serie A, but Mancini’s midfield choices are very limited. Luis Figo fractured his fibula in a clash with Pavel Nedved during the 1-1 draw at Juventus on Sunday and will be out for approximately two months. Patrick Vieira, Dejan Stankovic, Francesco Toldo and defender Marco Materazzi are also injured, so some reshuffling is required.
Hernan Crespo, Julio Cruz and David Suazo continue their battle to be Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s partner upfront, the Swede the only untouchable in the front line. Adriano is expected to miss out again after Mancini publicly berated him for not “living the life of an athlete.” It is a return to the Olimpico for former Lazio men Cesar Aparecido, Crespo and ex-Roma stars Walter Samuel, Olivier Dacourt and Cristian Chivu.
Keep an eye on: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter) – The Ballon d’Or candidate is the key creative figure for the Serie A leaders and, with Figo out, the one who can guarantee a match-winning moment of magic.
Last season: Inter 4-3 Lazio
Form guide: Inter (W W D W D) Lazio (L W L L L)
Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Cordoba, Samuel, Chivu; Zanetti, Dacourt, Cambiasso, Cesar; Ibrahimovic, Crespo
Lazio (probable): Ballotta; Scaloni, Stendardo, Cribari, De Silvestri; Firmani, Ledesma, Manfredini; Meghni; Rocchi, Makinwa

Re: Lazio vs Parma
Lazio-Parma open for supporters
Lazio-Parma will be played on Sunday without restrictions for both sides supporters. This is what the National Observatory on sports events has decided. The Observatory has anyway retained the right to adopt other security measures in case of potential risk elements.

Re: Lazio vs Parma
Lazio - Parma
Stadio Olimpico
This weekend sees a clash of the fallen giants at the Stadio Olimpico as Lazio play host to Parma. A struggling Gialloblu side is something calcio enthusiasts have become accustomed to in recent years, but the capital club’s stunning third-place finish last term now seems like a distant memory as they sit just three places above the relegation zone.
It’s certainly been a difficult time for Coach Delio Rossi, who has seen the highs of a decent start to their Champions League campaign brought down by their disappointing domestic form. The tragic death of Lazio supporter Gabriele Sandri meant that their game with Inter was postponed, so it will have been the best part of three weeks that the Biancocelesti have gone without a League match by the time they run out on the pitch this weekend.
Their last outing saw them fall 1-0 to Fiorentina with a disappointing display in front of their home fans. Rossi will be expecting more from his troops this time out though, especially as he has some key players back at his disposal. Valon Behrami is tipped to take the right-back spot from Lionel Scaloni, ensuring that their entire defence remains under the age of 30 – although ‘keeper Marco Ballotta’s 43 years somewhat spoils the average age of the line-up.
Massimo Mutarelli’s stupid sending off against the Viola for dissent means that he is banned for three matches, leaving the door open for Mourad Meghni to try and fulfil his undoubted potential. The Frenchman was once seen as a potential heir to Zinedine Zidane, but he has stalled in recent years. Goran Pandev has used the international break to good effect, as he is now free of injury and likely to replace Stephen Makinwa alongside Tommaso Rocchi to resume their fruitful partnership. However, Gaby Mundigayi will play no part in this match due to suspension.
Another thing leaning in Lazio’s favour is Parma’s woeful form away from their Tardini home. They picked up just one victory on their travels last term and are yet to get off the mark this time out. Some may say that they’ve got to do it sooner or later, but the Olimpico is a formidable place to visit. It’s even tougher when you’re making plenty of changes from a team which recently held Juventus to a 2-2 draw, as Coach Mimmo Di Carlo is forced to do.
There’s a switch between the sticks as veteran shot-stopper Luca Bucci makes way for Nicola Pavarini, who’s no spring chicken himself. Fellow old boy Fernando Couto has served his three-game ban and is likely to step in for the injured Marco Rossi, while the suspended Ferdinand Coly sees his place go to Damiano Zenoni. Elsewhere, despite an impressive display against Juve, Andrea Gasbaronni is likely to miss out as Daniele Dessena comes into the side. The talented Domenico Morfeo will be another watching on, as his ridiculous sending off against the Bianconeri just 30 seconds after coming on as a sub means that he is banned.
Di Carlo hasn’t done too badly on the Ducali bench this term after impressing with Mantova in recent years, but with a spate of Coaches losing their jobs in the past month he might not be feeling quite so comfortable in the hotseat if he doesn’t pick up some more wins soon. However, he can take heart from Parma’s 2003 showing at the Olimpico, when they walked away with the three points.
Keep an eye on: Bernardo Corradi (Parma) – The Manchester City flop will be desperate to impress his former employers, but much will depend on the quality of service to him.
Last season: Lazio 0-0 Parma
Form guide: Lazio (L W L L L) Parma (L W D D D)
Lazio (probable): Ballotta; Behrami, Stendardo, Cribari, Zauri; Firmani, Ledesma, Manfredini; Meghni; Rocchi, Pandev
Parma (probable): Pavarini; Zenoni, Falcone, Couto, Castellini; Dessena, Morrone, Cigarini; Reginaldo, Pisanu; Corradi

Re: Lazio vs Parma Serie A Week 13 - 25/11/07 (14.00 UK)
Lazio, Curva Nord deserted for 20 minutes
For next Sunday match at the Olimpico, Lazio-Parma, biancocelesti supporters
have decided to leave the Curva Nord empty for the first 20 minutes of the game. And they’ve extended the advice to the entire stadium. There are several reasons. First of all “the murder of a young man which needs truth and justice”, is written on the Irriducibili official statement. “The pain for the unfair and cruel death of Gabriele it’s too much alive. It’s too strong the will to say no once again to a repression, blind and at the same time targeted, chosen as “only way” by political and soccer institutions. It’s too strong the need to stress on the problems which grip the soccer world and that in the name of the mere profit are continuously circumvented or simply ignored”.

Re: Lazio vs Parma Serie A Week 13 - 25/11/07 (14.00 UK)
Serie A Week 13 - 25/11/07 (14.00 UK)
Lazio 1 - 0 Parma
Firmani 89 (L)
Stadio Olimpico
Fabio Firmani snatched a fortunate last-minute winner on an emotional day for Lazio.
Both these sides were challenging for the title not too long ago, but the gravity of the situation became clear when Lazio defender Guglielmo Stendardo dubbed it "a relegation dogfight." The Biancocelesti may be in the Champions League, but they had lost four of their last five domestic games and continued to deal with an injury crisis ruling out Luciano Zauri, Valon Behrami, Mobido Diakhite', Simone Del Nero and suspended duo Massimo Mutarelli and Gaby Mudingayi. Lazio old boy Fernando Couto returned from a ban to face his former club, but Ferdinand Coly was suspended and Domenico Morfeo frozen out for disciplinary reasons.
Before kick-off Cristian De Silvestri - a friend of the deceased DJ - laid flowers in honour of Gabriele Sandri, the Lazio supporter accidentally killed by a stray policeman's bullet on November 11. In protest at the incident, the Biancocelesti supporters went 'on strike', emptying the curva nord for the opening 20 minutes.
Parma's last victory here in Serie A was an entertaining 3-2 result in September 2003, but they had failed to score in their next three visits.
Sebastiano Siviglia nodded inches wide of the target from Cristian Ledesma's corner kick, while Luca Bucci was at full stretch to parry Goran Pandev's effort.
Former Lazio man Bernardo Corradi attempted an audacious backheel flick from Reginaldo's cross and Andrea Gasbarroni's lob soared over the bar.
De Silvestri went off with a knee injury to make way for Lionel Scaloni, adding to Lazio's already serious fitness worries. They were also unlucky on 33 minutes to see substitute Scaloni gather Tommaso Rocchi's assist and his shot fingertipped on to the base of the upright by Luca Bucci.
Just five minutes later Lazio hit the woodwork for a second time, as Fabio Firmani's missile from the edge of the box cracked against the bar and Rocchi was offside when he tried to turn in the loose ball.
Rocchi should have done better on an acrobatic volley and especially the free header on 62 minutes, while Francesco Parravicini fired over for Parma.
It looked to be going towards a stalemate, but a stroke of luck gave Lazio the winner in the final minute. Stephen Makinwa cut back for Firmani, whose shot took a double deflection off Zenoni to dribble past a stranded Bucci. In celebration, Firmani and the players rushed to the curva nord to embrace the image of Gabriele Sandri.
Lazio: Ballotta; De Silvestri (Scaloni 26), Stendardo, Siviglia, Kolarov; Firmani, Ledesma, Manfredini; Meghni (Mauri 65); Pandev (Makinwa 76), Rocchi
Parma: Bucci; Zenoni, Falcone (Paci 77), Couto, Castellini; Cigarini (Parravicini 59), Morrone; Reginaldo, Gasbarroni, Pisanu (Dessena 84); Corradi

What a beautigul gesture from our players during the celebration. We left it until too late though. I also hope to see this encourage Firmani, very good perfomance and a goal to say that.
Will bring in link to the goal and celebration later on...

Re: Lazio vs Parma Serie A Week 13 - 25/11/07 (14.00 UK)
Firmani’s most important goal
Monday 26 November, 2007
Lazio goal hero Fabio Firmani has described his emotions after scoring the Biancocelesti’s winner against Parma on Sunday.
The Stadio Olimpico clash was emotionally charged after the death of Aquile fan Gabriele Sandri on November 11.
The game looked set to end 0-0 before Firmani hit a last-gasp winner and celebrated by embracing the image of Sandri on the Curva.
“Every night after I have played for Lazio it is difficult to sleep, but this time it was still harder because of the emotion of the goal,” the 29-year-old explained.
“I haven’t spoken to Sandri’s parents, but I will find them and I want to give my shirt to Gabriele’s brother Cristiano.”
The Parma encounter was just Firmani’s third start of a campaign that has seen him mostly used as a back-up.
“The goal was worth a career – it was unique and it was payback for all the hard work that I have done and patience that I have shown when I haven’t been picked.
“A goal like that is worth more than a derby. It’s as if I could give Gabriele that goal.
“When I came back down from the Curva I hugged Lorenzo Di Silvestri as this goal had to come from him or from me.”

Inter Want To Maintain Lead On Top
Following the tragic death of Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri, who was killed on 11 November by a policeman during a row between fans of Juventus and Lazio, Inter-Lazio was one of the three matches subsequently postponed. Roma-Cagliari and Atalanta-Milan were the other two, with the Giallorossi playing on Wednesday as well. Milan still have to find a date as they are playing in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
For Serie A leaders Inter things are going very well at the moment, particularly after their latest win in Florence last weekend (2-0). Although the Viola started the game very well, after Inter took the lead thanks to a precise strike by midfielder Luis Jimenez on 10 minutes, they took control of proceedings and never looked back.
The second goal, like the first, came on a splendid counter-attack with Ibrahimovic once again supplying the final pass, this time finding the ever-reliable Julio Cruz alone in front of goalkeeper Sebastien Frey. The Nerazzurri’s second came just before the break, and they had little trouble maintaining their 2-0 lead until the final whistle.
Considering the absence of a player as important in defence as Marco Materazzi, who’s been out injured since a summer friendly with the Azzurri, it’s remarkable how well the Inter backline, currently the best in the league with just 8 goals conceded, has held up. But the Nerazzurri’s strength in depth covers all areas of the pitch, as the likes of Patrick Vieira and Luis Figo are also currently out, yet Inter’s results, or the quality of their football, haven’t suffered from their absence.
With things also going well in Europe, where they’ve qualified to the next round of the Champions League as group winners with a game to spare, confidence is running high in the Inter camp right now. Nevertheless, Roma are still breathing down their necks in Serie A, as they have just three points less than them and look set to be their main challengers in the title race.
Following tonight’s games in fact, Inter could potentially find themselves eight points above bitter rivals Juventus, which would make it very tough for the Bianconeri to recover and challenge for the Scudetto. Still, there’s a long road ahead and the Champions League could take a lot of energy out of both Inter and Roma in the final stretch, and Juventus will hope that the distance between them and the league leaders will not have become too large by then.
Overall, it’s pretty much what the pre-season predictions suggested, with Inter and Roma the main challengers for the title, the only surprise being that Milan are already pretty much out of it, with 13 points less than Inter. As could be expected, Juventus are also slightly behind as they are, after all, a newly promoted side and for all their prestige they don't quite have the quality of Inter or Roma.
Lazio Hope To Be Inter's Bogey Team Yet Again
Although on paper the result of a match between the league leaders and the team in 15th place should be a foregone conclusion, Lazio are definitely not an easy side to beat, especially for Inter. While recent games have shown a change in the trend, as the Nerazzurri have won their last three encounters with Delio Rossi's men, Lazio have always been a bogey team for Inter.
Their 3-1 home win in March 2006 was their first against Lazio since 1993, while the 2-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico in December 2006 was their first away win against them in over 10 years.
The Biancocelesti will take heart from those stats, as their recent form in Serie A and in Europe has been poor. Their recent home loss against Olympiakos (1-2) means they are practically out of the Champions League, unless they manage to win in Madrid against Real, and Werder Bremen don't beat Olympiakos away from home on the final matchday.
In Serie A, meanwhile, they've won four points from their last two league games against Parma (1-0 at the Olimpico) and Siena (1-1 in Tuscany), but before that they had a run of three consecutive defeats and they've been dangling dangerously close to the relegation zone for most of the season.
It's very likely that these problems are largely due to Lazio's involvement in the Champions League, where they've played some tough games and also had some good results, particularly at home against Real Madrid, whom they held to a 2-2 draw, and Werder Bremen, who were beaten 2-1. Nevertheless, the team don't have the strength in depth of an Inter or Roma to be able to compete equally well both domestically and in Europe.
The squad which did so well in Serie A last season, finishing third along with Milan, did not suffer any major losses during the summer transfer campaign, so they should definitely be able to get out of their difficult current situation. Perhaps getting eliminated from the Champions League, however painful, could help them achieve a better league position, as for the current Lazio team it seems highly improbable thay they would be able to go far in the competition.
FORM GUIDE
Inter
02/12 (Serie A): Fiorentina-Inter 0-2
27/11 (Champions League): Inter-Fenerbahce 3-0
24/11 (Serie A): Inter-Atalanta 2-1
07/11 (Champions League): Inter-CSKA Moscow 4-2
04/11 (Serie A): Juventus-Inter 1-1
Lazio
02/12 (Serie A): Siena-Lazio 1-1
28/11 (Champions League): Lazio-Olympiakos 1-2
25/11 (Serie A): Lazio-Parma 1-0
06/11 (Champions League): Lazio-Werder Bremen 2-1
03/11 (Serie A): Lazio-Fiorentina 0-1
TEAM NEWS
Inter
Olivier Dacourt was the most recent addition to Inter's list of injured players as he suffered a knock in the first half of Sunday's game in Florence. Patrick Vieira, goalkeeper Francesco Toldo, Luis Figo, Adriano (who is in Brazil at the moment), and Cesar are also all unavailable.
Possible formation (4-3-1-2): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Cordoba, Samuel, Chivu; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Stankovic; Jimenez; Ibrahimovic, Cruz.
Lazio
Simone Del Nero, Modibo Diakite, Valon Behrami, and Mourad Meghni are out injured, while Massimo Mutarelli is suspended
Possible formation (4-3-1-2): Ballotta; De Silvestri, Stendardo, Cribari, Zauri; Mudingayi, Ledesma, Firmani; Mauri; Pandev, Rocchi.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Julio Cruz (Inter)
With last weekend's crucial goal against Fiorentina, he reached the brilliant Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the Serie A goalscorers list with seven goals. Perhaps his definitive breakthrough came a bit late in his career, but the 33-year-old striker has been in the form of his life with Inter. No one thought much of him when he joined the club in 2003 following Hernan Crespo's (temporary) departure, but he's improved gradually each season and always makes a mark when he's called upon to play. Recently, he's even earned a starting place at Inter, keeping the likes of David Suazo and fellow Argentine Hernan Crespo on the bench.
Goran Pandev (Lazio)
The Macedonian striker has established himself as a reliable Serie A striker over recent seasons at Lazio, finding the net 22 times in the last two years. Pandev was actually brought to Italy by Inter, with whom he played for a while in the youth side, and was part-owned by the Milan giants before they let go of him to lure Dejan Stankovic in 2004. Needless to say, he will be eager to impress against the team that initially believed in him enough to give him a chance in Italian football.
PREDICTION
Roma will definitely be hoping for a favour from their bitter rivals Lazio, who can help the Giallorossi get closer to the top of the table if they get a result against Inter in this game. With Roma playing a much easier game, at least on paper, at home against bottom team Cagliari, it would almost certainly add some excitement to the Scudetto race. However, Inter are on a roll at the moment and there's no reason why they shouldn't keep the winning mood for this one.
Inter-Lazio 3-1

Re: Inter vs Lazio, Serie A thread
Rossi: “We’ve got nothing to lose”
“Inter is surely a tougher team then us, but Lazio has the strength of having nothing to lose, a mental condition that in soccer has very much importance”. This is Lazio’s manager Delio Rossi philosophy, in consideration of tomorrow match against Inter, for the Championship rearranged fixture, and of the decisive Champions league game against Real Madrid. “Lazio has to play as a provincial tem? The term is depreciative, but focuses on reality: we have to play fierce, but this had always been the prerogative of this Lazio. Also Inter, if you look carefully, plays as a provincial: with much physic and respect for distances.
Lazio has its own features, both it plays in Siena, or in Milan against Inter, or nest Wednesday in Madrid. To weather actual problems – continues the biancoceleste manager – due to an incredible series of setbacks, we only have to rally round each other, all together. We maybe have to have a better belief in our possibilities. Nor easy neither impossible exist”.
Going with his thought to Champions League, Rossi then points out: “In Champions League, we thought that Real and Werder were out of our reach, but we did it very good making results. Olympiakos was much more in writing the team within the means of our possibilities, and instead we lost at the Olimpico”. Then the manager backs talking about Inter: “It’s the Italian reference team. For its physicalness, quality and turnover no one is at its level. There are other teams which have grown with the purchase of quality players. I’m talking about Juventus, Fiorentina and Roma, but they only got closer”. Lazio needs points and needs to beat former biancoceleste Roberto Mancini line up: “Nerazurri last year already go winning the championship, but in San Siro, if we didn’t made a couple of stupid errors, we’d played the match… Today’s Lazio, in spite of ups and downs, mostly due to injuries and absurd episodes, it’s a team that, anyway, on the pitch maintains the same spirits as last year, not being able to do it for the whole match perhaps, because of certain deficiencies, do to the unusual fact of playing three matches a week. The team never collapsed – says Rossi -, as sometimes did last year. It always thought of recovering, ‘till the end. So, we’ll play as Lazio knows, also tomorrow”.

Re: Inter vs Lazio, Serie A thread
Inter 3 - 0 Lazio
Ibrahimovic pen 22 (I), Maicon 33 (I), Suazo 55 (I)
Stadio Meazza
It was all too easy for Inter as they beat Lazio 3-0 in their rescheduled Week 12 match to stay three points clear at the top.
This match was called off on November 11 after the tragic death of 26-year-old Lazio fan Gabriele Sandri. He was in the back of a car when a police officer's gun accidentally went off, killing him instantly, in a motorway service station near Arezzo. Rescheduled for December 5, Inter were without the injured Patrick Vieira, Dejan Stankovic, Luis Figo and Olivier Dacourt, so Pele got his first start. The Biancocelesti were struggling in Serie A and Europe, fresh from a 1-1 draw at Siena.
It was a sluggish start to the match and after some fancy Zlatan Ibrahimovic footwork led to nothing, Goran Pandev's effort skimmed the target. Ibra hit his strike into the ground, making it easy for Marco Ballotta, but the Swede was more dangerous with a fierce free kick from 25 metres that tested the veteran goalkeeper.
The deadlock was broken after 22 minutes, as Guglielmo Stendardo was adjudged to have hauled down Nicolas Andre Burdisso. Ibrahimovic stepped up and ended his goal drought in Serie A by firing the penalty hard under the bar.
Tommaso Rocchi flicked a Stefano Mauri cross just past the far post with his back to goal in an acrobatic gesture.
Inter thought they had doubled their lead, but when Ballotta parried Pele's effort into the path of David Suazo, the Honduran was in an offside position.
The celebration was only postponed by a couple of minutes, as Douglas Maicon was left unmarked to volley in a corner kick from six yards. Lorenzo De Silvestri lost the Brazilian and he was given far too much space.
Luis Jimenez had scored two goals in as many games against Fenerbahce and Fiorentina, confirming his fine form here as Inter were in control. Lazio only threatened with Cristian Ledesma from distance.
Delio Rossi needed more power in attack and introduced forward-thinking full-back Aleksander Kolarov for Stendardo. However, within seconds of the restart Suazo dispossessed Pandev to drill a powerful effort wide.
Rocchi also fired off target from distance, but Ibrahimovic threaded through for Jimenez on the counter and Ballotta showed good reflexes to save with his legs in a one-on-one situation.
A splendid Ibrahimovic volley left Kolarov's thigh with a bruise, but Inter made it 3-0 when Suazo found acres of space as he ran on to a smart Esteban Cambiasso ball from the centre circle, keeping his cool to sweep the finish past Ballotta with the inside of his right foot.
Jimenez almost scored the goal of the season! He chested down the ball, flicked it up with his right foot to leave two defenders for dead and volleyed just over the bar with his left. It was a stunning move from the young Chilean.
Walter Samuel was booked and will be suspended for the match with Torino and Lazio finally staged something of a fightback when Julio Cesar was forced into a fantastic fingertip save on Rocchi's angled drive from the edge of the box. It was a brief respite from the Nerazzurri dominance that characterised the rest of the match.
In the final minute substitute Santiago Solari incredibly wasted a free header with only Ballotta to beat.
Inter: Julio Cesar; Maicon, Burdisso, Samuel, Maxwell; Zanetti, Pelé (Materazzi 85), Cambiasso; Jimenez (Solari 75); Ibrahimovic, Suazo (Crespo 61)
Lazio: Ballotta; Cribari, De Silvestri, Stendardo (Kolarov 46), Zauri; Mudingayi, Ledesma, Manfredini; Mauri (Meghni 64); Rocchi, Pandev (Makinwa 75)

Goal scorers were ibra penalt. Jiemenez and stendardo were holding each other)
MNaicon came in completely free on a corner to shoot from 6 yards.

Balotta isnt guilty man...We discussed the transfer window matter and there's the core of the prolem. The team must refresh it self with new tactical weapons...Lazio is just too predictable...The teams know them from last year and it's getting too obvious...Balotta had good saves...
