The 17-year-old Messi, who plays club soccer for Spain's FC Barcelona, scored in the 52nd minute with a head shot off a centering pass from Lautaro Formica.
Messi, who from the start of the tournament was seen as its marquee player, hasn't disappointed the fans in Colombia's coffee-growing region. The forward dazzled with his fancy footwork throughout the game and his goal brought his total in the tournament to five. Argentina, the tournament favorite, hasn't lost yet.

Colombia also remains undefeated in the tournament, and its unknown star Hugo Rodallega has been putting on a show of his own. Rodallega had two goals Tuesday against Chile, giving him a tournament-leading total of eight.

Chile rocketed to an early 2-0 lead on a penalty shot by Fernando Meneses in the first minute of the game and a shot from Matias Fernandez just five minutes later.

But Colombia, eager to please its 20,000 fans, didn't give up. Rodallega opened his team's scoring with a penalty shot 21 minutes into the game and Abel Aguila tied it up in the 46th minute.

Chile took the lead again when Jose Fuenzalida received a center pass in the 64th minute and found the back of the net. Colombia equalized for the second time on a spectacular free kick from Rodallega three minutes later. The winning goal came on a header by Colombia's Juan Toja in the 89th minute, causing the fans to let out a thunderous roar.

The tournament began with 10 teams, and is now down to six. The top four teams move on to the world under-20 finals in the Netherlands in June.

The next games are scheduled for Thursday with Chile facing Argentina, Colombia playing Uruguay and Brazil going against Venezuela.

Colombia (AP) - Paulinho Betanin headed in the winning goal Thursday as Brazil claimed a 1-0 victory over Venezuela in the under-20 South American championships.

Argentina scrambled to hold Chile to a 1-1 draw and Colombia downed Uruguay 3-1 in Thursday's other matches at Manizales.
Brazil and Colombia now share the lead in the final leg of the tournament with six points each, while Argentina has four points and Chile one. Venezuela and Uruguay have both failed to earn any points.

The top four teams qualify for the world under-20 finals in the Netherlands in June.

Brazil controlled the ball for most of the match, but struggled to find openings in Venezuela's defense until Betanin finally broke through in the 63rd minute with a perfect header off a Fernandinho pass.

Venezuela missed its best chance to score in the 35th minute when a long kick by Alejandro Guerra was narrowly deflected by goalie Bruno.

Fernando Lavezzi sent the ball flying into the back of the net for Argentina in the 37th minute after a surprisingly aggressive Chile missed several opportunities at goal.

Chile kept Argentina on the defensive well into the second half until Juan Lorca equalized with a powerful header off a corner shot in the 74th.

In other play, Colombia cruised past Uruguay on two headers by Wason Renteria and a rebound shot by team captain Abel Aguilar. Uruguay's only goal came with a free kick by Juan Albin.

Colombia, which thoroughly dominated Thursday's match, has proved the big surprise this year, also not dropping a game in six matches.

On Saturday, Venezuela faces Chile.
