Default Breaking news! Virginia Massacre: School Shooting

Oh my god this is simply out of control. The deadliest school shooting in US history just occurred this morning. 33 including lone gunmen killed. First that Columbine school shooting, and now this.

Officials: Gunman dead after bloody campus rampage

POSTED: 5:21 p.m. EDT, April 16, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Virginia (CNN) -- At least 33 people, including a gunman, were killed Monday during shootings in a dorm and a building housing classrooms at Virginia Tech, university officials said.

The death toll makes the incident the deadliest school attack in U.S. history.

Two people were killed at a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., while another 30 people were killed two hours later at Norris Hall, the engineering science and mechanics building, university officials said.

Though university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said police were still investigating whether the two incidents were related, he also said the gunman at Norris Hall took his own life. Investigators are not ruling out a second shooter, Flinchum said. (Watch the police chief explain where bodies were found Video)

"Norris Hall is a tragic and a sorrowful crime scene, and we are in the process of identifying victims," university President Charles Steger said.

Asked why the campus, which has more than 26,000 students, was not shut down after the first shooting, Flinchum responded that police received information that "it was an isolated event to that building and the decision was made not to cancel classes at that time."

Steger added, "We had some reason to believe the shooter had left campus."

Spokespersons for hospitals in Roanoke, Christiansburg, Blacksburg and Salem told CNN they were treating 29 people from the shootings.

Sharon Honaker with Carilion New River Medical Center in Christiansburg said one of the four gunshot victims being treated there was in critical condition.

Scott Hill, a spokesman for Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, where 17 wounded students were taken, said he wasn't expecting any more victims. (Map of Blacksburg)

The killings mark the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, surpassing attacks at Columbine High School in 1999 and at the University of Texas in 1966.

The first reported shootings occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium. (Campus map)

Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos."

The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele. (Watch police, ambulances hustle to the scene Video)

Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window.

"We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor.

Another student, Tiffany Otey, said she and her classmates initially thought the gunshots were construction noise until they heard screaming and police officers with bulletproof vests and machine guns entered her classroom.

"They were telling us to put our hands above our head and if we didn't cooperate and put our hands above our heads they would shoot," Otey said. "I guess they were afraid, like us, like the shooter was going to be among one of us."
Student reports 'mayhem'

Student Matt Waldron said he did not hear the gunshots because he was listening to music, but he heard police sirens and saw officers hiding behind trees with their guns drawn.

"They told us to get out of there so we ran across the drill field as quick as we could," he said.

Waldron described the scene on campus as "mayhem." (Watch a student's recording of police responding to loud bangs Video)

"It was kind of scary," he said. "These two kids I guess had panicked and jumped out of the top-story window and the one kid broke his ankle and the other girl was not in good shape just lying on the ground."

Madison Van Duyne said she and her classmates in a media writing class were on "lockdown" in their classrooms. They were huddled in the middle of the classroom, writing stories about the shootings and posting them online.

The university is updating its students through e-mails, and an Internet webcam is broadcasting live pictures of the campus.

The shootings came three days after a bomb threat Friday forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings, WDBJ in Roanoke reported. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.

Last August, the first day of classes was cut short by a manhunt after an escaped prisoner was accused of killing a security guard at a Blacksburg hospital and a sheriff's deputy.

After the Monday shootings, students were instructed to stay indoors and away from windows, police at the university said. (Watch a student describe living through a "college Columbine" Video)

"Virginia Tech has canceled all classes. Those on campus are asked to remain where they are, lock their doors and stay away from windows. Persons off campus are asked not to come to campus," a statement on the university Web site said.

The university has scheduled a convocation for 2 p.m. ET Tuesday. Classes also have been canceled Tuesday. In Washington, the House and Senate observed moments of silence for the victims and President Bush said the nation was "shocked and saddened" by news of the tragedy

"Today, our nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones," he said. "We hold the victims in our hearts, we lift them up in our prayers and we ask a loving God to comfort those who are suffering today."

Before Monday, the deadliest school shootings came in 1966 and 1999.

In the former, Charles Joseph Whitman, a 25-year-old ex-Marine, killed 13 people on the University of Texas campus. He was killed by police.

In 1999, 17-year-old Dylan Klebold and 18-year-old Eric Harris -- armed with guns and pipe bombs -- killed 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.

This is shocking but yet becoming almost commonplace. In the last 10 years in America there have been 19 fatal shootings at schools. America is a country in which there are 200 million privately owned guns. It's just out of control

U.S.A. is a huge country and you cant compare 19 shootings in USA to 19 shootings in Scotland but still it is becoming all too common with the mall shootings and office shootings that already occured this year. It's all just starting to pile up.

Hopefully everybody on SFN is safe and lets see what unfolds from this tragedy.

This is what happens when you have hip-hop horror movies around! There needs to be a mandatory courses in gun safety!!!! All my friends who own guns and grew up around guns have all said the same thing!!! This is what happens when people buy guns who have NO business owning guns! Guns are a tool NOT a status symbol or substitute for respect!!

yeah lets start blaming hip hop, video games, and movies!

thats not the answer... i think the problem is much more complex than that, its more of how we treat people especially psychologically disturbed people. Is it not strange that all the individuals that commit crimes like the one this morning have severe mental problems? People make fun of the geeky kids which creates a sense of isolation and depression, which is normally what drives these people to do things like what happened this morning.

Truly a horrific event and may the victims rest in peace now.

look it doesn't help that society (ie music, movies, video games and the media) makes gun violence and violence in general cool or less real! What we need no more gun llaws but firearm education! When you have society purpetuating violence, sex, and drug use you don't think that kids will look upon those things and feel it is ok to do things that harm people. What you need to look at is how they are raised and what they used for entertainment! If those kids are neglected and play violent games and watch horror movies to the point of having fantasies of committing violence then....

As I said guns are a tool and at the end of the day society and parents have a resposiblity to make sure their children made awhere of their actions!

This is what happens when people are out of touch with reality... when people don't understand what rules are for, and when the norms in a society are out of wack.

33 including: the shooter, the shooter's girlfriend, the residential advisor on the floor of the dormitory, and the rest were in the actual classrooms

Truly horrible what happened, I cannot imagine what the people would have gone through when the event happened, although I saw some interviews a few people tried to play dead, block the door for the shooter or tried to do some other things to stay alive.

You can't blame video games, movies, rap/hip-hop for these ridiculous things, that's simply to easy and with what objective ? having more or less won't make any difference as the REAL cause would have been most likely something was not completely right in the head of the killer. What about a simply bully-revenge... or whatever, it's not always the mass-media!!

Earlier on CNN I catched an interview about a previous killer who murdered a few people on a school back in '96, 'according' to him he was completely unaware of how life and death actually works and didn't realize the people he killed wouldn't come back. He didn't seem the most sensible person, but if it's the real truth we'll never know.

Just an example, there's nothing wrong with bad language, horror movies, hip-hop music in my opinion, these simply cannot be causes of a massacre, a bad influence is one thing, sure it's not good for a 10 year old probably to watch/listen it, but was that the problem of the movie/music ? what about parental advice ? not only advice, but the education of children what is common sense of how and when to use a gun.

How can this topic always be brought up when there are so many killings simply because a gun was lying in the house, a child finds his parents gun and either kills his sister for 'fun' or takes the gun to school to impress his friends with gods knows what kind of consequences. (happened plenty times in history already ).

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with a policy of those guns ( I am by no means judging another country politics ), because it's the fault of the movies/music/bad language... I mean if these weren't there the guns would be harmless and the society perfect...

I know the history of it's role in the US, the patriotic value to it, but there will always be kids accidently coming in the possession of a gun with fatal consequences. Or a teenager who has lost control and is just 'borrowing' his father's shiny gun.

I'm saying this, because if the US allows these policies, it's to easy to blame it on society, music and movies, but never the parents or the actual tool..

There is a problem in that culture too, gang killings, but to another extent and with a whole different intention ( not influenced, most have no choice ).

But we can't say these are the faults of something else, because massacres already existed a LONG and LONG time ago, before rap/hip-hop and movies.

Once again, my sympathies for the family of the victims.

from what i've heard the killer was jealous at his girlfriend that she had been with another man or something like that.
