Default Visiting London

Finally it happened, I am on my first business trip of the year Dec 10-17. Surely too late, but hey it's Christmas time and should be fun

For the first time will stay in a decent Mariott next to London Eye and have a business class flight I'm really happy!

Any ideas what to do there in the evenings? Wanted to go for a football game, but not sure if there is any premiership game with free tickets?

cheers

You might be able to go and see a game in the championship, it can be pretty difficult to get a ticket to a premiership match.

The pubs would be pretty lively id expect and there are many different sights to see in London.

Ive been there before about 6 years ago, and I enjoyed it, though it was rather cold and the first time I had ever seen snow in real life.

yep, I am thinking of championship game but still hoping that maybe there are tickets for Totenham or West Ham or even Fulham games? need insiders info hope G can advise he lives somewhere around there... Can you imagine there is Chelsea - Arsenal game at that time, but I was told here that tickets may cost up to 150USD

yep, London is a great place with lots of sight seeing - this trip is a bit busy but I'll try to go to British Museum and Contemporary Arts museum - the only large museums have not been in yet, and yes the Fabrique disco near Soho is my dream place!

British pubs, Oxford street and Soho do not count - that's normal evening spent plan

This is going to be my fifth London trip

Hmm what can I recommend? You probably know just as much as me to be honest, I don't get to go into central London that often. Tickets to Premiership matches can usually be obtained on the day of the match for sometimes as little as 15 pounds, but it can be difficult.

There might be some good gigs on at that time if you're a music fan? Lots of bands are touring the UK during the December month.

Suggestion 1.Trafalgar Square Christmas Carols
Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DS
Gather together with the rest of London in Trafalgar Square around the capital’s most prominent Christmas tree (an annual gift from the people of Oslo) to sing a tuneful pack of nostalgic, festive standards.

Head right to the centre of modern London, where Whitehall and the Strand meet the West End. As Nelson and his lions tower overhead, various red-cheeked choirs will sing their hearts out between 17:00 and 21:00 everyday. Last year over 50 groups of singers got the crowds going.

Trafalgar Square is quintessential London and carol singing essential Christmas, why not combine the two?

Suggestion 2. In the Face of History: European Photographers in the 20th Century
Barbican Centre, Silk Street, EC2 Map
The 'Age of Extremes' - the period between the First World War and the fall of the Iron Curtain, forms the basis for this ambitious exhibition, charting the history of the 20th century through the work of some of its finest photographers.

War and genocide loom largest in the show. André Kertész carried his camera to the front as a conscript in the Austro-Hungarian army; Henryk Ross' images of the Lodz ghetto were crucial evidence in the trial of Adolph Eichmann. Other photographers documented the social upheavals of the period: transsexuals in post-war Paris, the counter-culture in 1960s Amsterdam, recession in North-East England during the Thatcher years.

A single collection could never provide a serious analysis of such a vast historical canvas, but this remains an unmissable selection of images from 100 years during which the world changed beyond recognition.

Suggestion 3. Rock 'n' Roll
Duke of York’s, St Martin's Lane, WC2 Map
On study leave in Cambridge, Czech academic Jan (Rufus Sewell) is delighted by all things English, and especially the rebellious new music of the 1960s. The beginning of the Prague Spring festival lures him back to his homeland but, when the Soviet tanks roll in, his record collection is smashed by the secret police and his favourite band - the bizarrely-named, but non-fictional, Plastic People of the Universe - are arrested for their "socially negative" music. This pushes him into a lifetime of rebellion and radicalism which reaches its zenith with the Velvet Revolution and the return of rock 'n' roll to Czechoslovakia.

After his uncharacteristically dull trilogy, 'The Coast of Utopia', Tom Stoppard's new play sees him back to his best with this brilliant drama about the power of music to change hearts and minds. It is filled with classic tunes from the likes of The Stones and Pink Floyd, and with the fizzing, joke-packed dialogue for which Stoppard is most famous.

This Royal Court Theatre production is helped by a great cast, with a dashing Rufus Sewell in the lead, Sinead Cusack playing both a mother and her ex-hippie daughter, and Brian Cox in his most bruising form as an English communist.

This is a fantastic return to form for one of our best playwrights.

NOTE: David Calder replaces Brian Cox from 26 Sep 2006
NOTE: Emma Fielding replaces Sinead Cusack and Dominic West replaces Rufus Sewell from 14 November 2006

Suggestion 4. Billy Elliot
Victoria Palace Theatre, Victoria Street, SW1 Map
When Elton John attended the first screening of Billy Elliot at the Cannes Film Festival, he was reduced to tears. Five years later, the low-budget Britflick that became a massive international hit transfers to the West End with songs by Sir Elton.

With its large cast of children drawn from three special 'Billy Elliot Academies' in the north of England, the standard of acting is very high. The same tensions drive the musical that drove the film, with Billy's successes measured against the failure of the miner's strike and the end of the traditional way of life for his family and friends. It's even more affecting on the stage, driven by some magnificent Elton John songs and Peter Darling's thrilling choreography. Like a modern West Side Story, the song-and-dance numbers are intimate parts of the plot, expressing character's inner feelings in a way that dialogue never could.

A triumphant tale of personal achievement, a moving social study, and a celebration of the sheer joy of dance, this is a rare combination of intelligence and pure pleasure. The Daily Telegraph has declared this the greatest British musical of all time, and they may well be right.

Thank you G so much!!! Hope you did not put too much effort and time, but it is so lovely!!! I'll certainly do everything of your suggestions and I am planning to read some photography books and perhaps take few lessons and certainly will go to that exhibition! Thank you very much - it is amazing!!!

Ryan - yeah sooner or later you'll come to Europe a bit of patience my friend

Laury - my top three wishlist includes Florence (!) and top 10 got Milan in it too, I am saving some money to take a trip to Greece next year and then a year after will go to Florence and Milano or maybe if lucky earlier.

As for now having a one day trip to offshore platform in the Caspian - man this platforms are like hotels got LCD tv and DVD, climate control in my room! Need to visit here a bit more

Sorry Laury, but I would not rate Milan as one of top cities to visit because when you think of Italy you picture warm weather, views of the beach, mediterranean type cities and this is not what Milan is. It kind of reminds me of Birmingham in that it does not have any good views or scenery and it is cold alot, It looks more mainland european than "Italian". Be warned... if you go to Milan do not expect the stereotypical Italy, the people are not as friendly as other Italian cities..... there more in a rush like Londoners.

WHAT ARE U SAYING?!?!?!?!Have u ever been to Milan? All right.

1."if u think of Italy u picture warm weather".well even in Rome it's really cold in winter.so even Rome is not an italian city.In Milano is really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter. But we don't have rain all the days of the year.

2.The people are not friendly?Well I'm Milanese and I think that I'm friendly.don't u think so?The only difference with the other italian cities is that we work more than them.If it wasn't 4 Milano,Italy would be considered "3rd world".

3.Don't say that we are like the english coz u know that u're wrong.
