A Mourinho Christmas
A Mourinho Christmas
Controversial Chelsea Coach José Mourinho sets down his pitchfork-wielding image once a year and enjoys a family Christmas of gut-inflating greed. This year 20 of his and wife Matilda’s closest friends will welcome in the festive season in England for the first time.
Last year Stamford Bridges’ Portuguese contingent (including Tiago; now at Olympique Lyon) left London after a Xmas eve training session to return to Portugal for the holidays. This year a chunk is staying to celebrate in a mixed Anglo-Lusitanian style.
Part of the reason for staying is the fact that Fulham visit Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day and there’s a training session planned for the morning of the 26th. It’s not the first time that confessed Catholic Mourinho spends Xmas outside his native Portugal.
“When I was at Barcelona I also celebrated Christmas far from Setúbal, but this time it’s going to be almost the same as I get to see a lot of close friends” explained the usually gruff tactician, who takes advantage of the excuse to loosen his belt.
“I eat Bacalhau (salt cod; traditional Portuguese Christmas fare), but I have to admit I’m no connoisseur. My weak point is puddings, desserts, sweets. I love everything, and since it’s only once a year, I throw caution to the wind and embrace Xmas, even if I have to work off the extra weight afterwards.”
