OWEN? I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HIM BACK
Daily Mirror 13 August 2005
LIVERPOOL boss Rafael Benitez has admitted for the first time that he wants to bring Michael Owen back to Anfield.
The Spaniard hinted last night that talks with Real Madrid are at an advanced stage and that Owen might once more be a Liverpool player as early as next week, probably on a loan deal.
The fly in the ointment is the interest of Manchester United. Madrid have indicated they are prepared to wait until the transfer deadline at the end of this month for United to step in with a cash deal to match their £10m valuation.
Mirror Sport understands that Liverpool have told Madrid they will pay the full asking price for Owen, but only after having him on loan for a year.
That will allow Benitez to spend the money he will collect from the impending sale of Milan Baros on a centre-half and a right-sided midfielder.
Madrid have so far resisted the idea of a loan deal because they want cash up front, but have indicated that if there is no other offer acceptable to Owen, then they will play ball. Benitez explained: "I am aware that Michael would like to come back. I don't know if we can do something because we are waiting for a good offer for Milan Baros.
"But he is a good player and I like him. I never had any problems with him. He is a nice boy, a good professional and a very good player."
Czech international Baros held talks with Aston Villa officials in a Liverpool hotel on Thursday night and could move to the Midlands club next week.
There is also interest from Lyon and Monaco, but Villa have got closest to the asking price of £7m with an offer of £6.5m, and they are close to agreeing personal terms.
Benitez stressed that the money from the Baros sale would go towards the purchase of a centre-half and a right-winger, and he expects to do both deals before the August 31 deadline. "We have 20 more days and we expect to get them in by then," he said. "I could say yes or no about Owen, but we must receive a good offer for Baros before we can proceed."
Manchester United's interest is the nagging worry for Benitez. Sir Alex Ferguson has maintained that he has no interest in Owen, but there has been some dialogue with Madrid and if a £10m offer is made, then Fergie will get Owen.
Real are ready to go back to Old Trafford to ask one final time if there is genuine interest. If the door is firmly shut, then Owen could arrive back on Merseyside after England's friendly against Denmark on Wednesday.
