Default Mexico to host Cup America 2009

So far is not official but is close to be, thanks to Alberto de La Torre (these days there's few things to thank to this guy given the poor way he handle Carmona and Galindo's doping). Anyway, the conversation to take the top championship of America to mexican soil convinced CONMEBOL officers that Mexico is by far the best if not only option for 2009, although after Venezuela 2007 the championship should go to a CONMEBOL member like Chile who's also interested in hosting the tournament the way pointing Mexico is clearer.

It all started in 1998 when there was speculation if Mexico could get cup America 2004 in case of a withdraw of Peru, then there was speculation if Venezuela could handle to host the tournament in 2007 and apparently they are going to manage to do it, but since the first time in 1998 Nicolas Leoz, president of CONMEBOL made it clear Mexico could host the Cup America when all the countries of CONMEBOL had hosted the tournament at least once, with Venezuela in 2007 that cycle is over and Mexico can host the tournament.

So in the last few weeks during the Confederations Cup, Alberto de La Torre restarted the conversations with the officers of CONMEBOL and apparently they agreed to give Mexico the tournament in 2009. The FMF it's already making plans and the tournament could be hosted in three cities for the three groups:

Monterrey for the group headed by Argentina

Guadalajara for the group headed by Brazil

and of course

Mexico City for the group headed by Mexico

All three cities have the two things in common, they have at least two stadiums available for the final round of the group stage when matches have to be played at the same time. And the most important thing for CONMEBOL at least is that in all three cities you can rise the price of the tikets in at leat 200%

As I said by far Mexico offers the most attracting environment for the CONMEBOL, where they don't need to invest a penny, there's by far better infraestructure than in South America and they can make a huge profit from the attendence.

Yep, but Mexico is constantly invited since 1993, with a historic performance of:

2 times 2nd place
2 times 3rd place
2 times eliminated in quarterfinals

That's a better record than many southamericans
