Papadopulo's press statement

Lazio boss Giuseppe Papadopulo has revealed that he will leave the club after talks over an extension stalled.

The tactician was hoping to remain with the capital outfit but has today confirmed his departure.

"Giuseppe Papadopulo would like to communicate that negotiations with SS Lazio over an extension haven’t ended positively," read a statement.

"Therefore, his relationship with the Biancocelesti club will terminate on 30 June 2005.

"Giuseppe Papadopulo would like to thank President Claudio Lotito for his faith and belief, the players and all the staff for their hard work.

"He would also like to thank the magnificent fans who never gave up on supporting the team during the difficult times which were faced and surpassed."

It’s now unclear who will take over after Lotito yesterday dismissed suggestions that Giovanni Trapattoni would be handed the job.

Possible candidates include former Torino and Reggina boss Giancarlo Camolese, plus possibly Zdenek Zeman of Lecce.

Delio Rossi, who left Atalanta last week, and Empoli tactician Mario Somma are other possibilities.

Lotito has now gone through two coaches in less than a year in charge, after he sacked Mimmo Caso in December.

Goodbye and good luck! I will never forget the derby victory and considering the conditions this man had to work in, I have nothing but respect.
It's interesting to see who our next coach will be.

And we have a new man in charge...

Official: Rossi nets Lazio job
Friday 10 June, 2005

Former Atalanta boss Delio Rossi has officially signed a one-year contract to take over at Lazio, announced the club this evening.

Rossi has been in the frame and took pole position once Frenchman Paul Le Guen passed up on the opportunity.

The tactician – who almost turned Atalanta’s season around but was eventually unable to avoid relegation – has penned a one-year deal with an option to extend for a second season.

He takes over from Giuseppe Papadopulo, whose contract was not renewed despite capturing an Intertoto Cup spot.

“We are convinced this is the right decision and all the rumours about Le Guen came from his interest in our project,” insisted President Claudio Lotito. “Rossi has always made sure his teams play entertaining football and I hope he’ll do the same here.”

Lazio also confirmed in their announcement that the new director of sport will be Carlo Osti, replacing Gabriele Martino following his resignation.

“Rossi is the right Coach for a revamped Lazio that will base a lot of its success on the youth sector,” added Lotito. “I hope the critics leave him to do his work. It is a one-year contract because, just as with husband and wife, you need to get to know each other before forging a partnership.”

Welcome Mr Rossi! Sounds good to me, though personally I would have preferred Le Guen.

And why would I be talking about the Pope in the Lazio forum? Those guys never resign anyways, they die.
