MADRID’S reputation as a footballing centre of racial intolerance was further underlined yesterday when pictures appeared of two Real players posing with banners supporting a far-right supporters’ group whose leaders have neo-Nazi sympathies.

The photographs, published in a Sunday newspaper, show Raul and Luis Figo holding a flag and scarf of the Ultras Sur, a notorious band of fanatics whose members have a history of violence.

Their emergence comes just four days after England’s black players were subjected to an avalanche of racial abuse during the friendly international with Spain at Real’s Bernabeu Stadium.

Madrid-born Raul, the captain of Real and Spain, has been adopted by the Ultras Sur as their hero. He is pictured holding a banner with a far-right emblem.

The Ultras Sur were formed in 1982 and are a permanent fixture at Real’s home games. It has been even been claimed that they even receive free tickets for matches from the club.

Jose Luis Ochaita, the Ultras leader, was arrested in 1998 in Germany for waving Nazi flags and banned for matches for three years for attacking a referee in Spain. The Ultras’ second in command, Alvaro Cardenas, was jailed for four years in 2003 after admitting attacking a policeman in 1999 with a knife because he thought (wrongly) he was a South American.

Piara Power, director of the football anti-racism organisation Kick It Out, said: "We’ve known about the Ultras’ links to Real Madrid for a long time. During Wednesday’s game I saw Spanish fascist flags being waved and 25 Ultras giving Nazi salutes."

Real have long been associated with the right in Spain and were the favourite team of the former fascist dictator General Franco.

amd where are the pictures you're talking about?
and even if they made it i don't trust that professionals and men like them would support racism. thay may pose with supporters logos but dont mean all the supporters in madrid are racists they are just like all ultras really devoted the club, yes some times aggressive and even brutal but show me country where this problem has been solved ? england vs turkey is it better than racist logos to fight and even kill each other??? so if you hate real for his players and achievements say it directly don't attack us with such things. every club has supporters and always part of them are drunk/aggressive/racist and ....

the ultras are very loyal, yet very retarded.

i remeber one of the ultra's chants that said "siempre fascistas, siempre madridistas" they are really retarded to boot, but still fans.

and where is that pic of Raul and Figo? it could be a photoshop for all i care.

I have seen these pictures and they do not appear to be photoshopped. The Ultra Sur, like the Ultras at Lazio seem to have a close relationship with the players. Obviously there are racist fans in every country, but in Spain and Italy it seems to be ignored. Also don't say that every club has racist fans, because that is not true.

ultra surs are very loyal supporters of real madrid, especially raul and figo. so naturally they would take a pic with them. btw, this incident happened quite a while ago already.

Or maybe someone just wanted to provoke people, but it didn't work out. Everyone knows about racism and it is not only in Spain, but everywhere.

PS: The guy who started the thread is banned which shows his general goals. I am not very sure his intentions were very neat when he opened this thread...lol
