In their visit to Rome, Florentino Pérez, ten members of the Board of Directors, the technical staff, the players, the physiotherapists and the field assistants have been received by His Holiness at his summer residence. It was a private and emotive reception that gives more solemnity to the Club’s Centenary celebrations.
The reception took place at John Paul II’s summer residence in Castelgandolfo. Florentino Pérez handed His Holiness a silver replica of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, a Madrid Fan Card to the name of John Paul II, and a Centenary commemorative shirt signed by all the team members.
In his speech, the President thanked the Pope for having granted Real Madrid an audience and tried to explain the values of the Club. He spoke about those values that have made Real Madrid the Best Club of the 20th Century. In his reply, John Paul II assured,“sports are a way to make a better society”. He thanked the expedition for their visit and blessed “the Club and all the Real Madrid family”.
Once the speeches were concluded, all the attendants kissed His Holiness’ ring. The Pope handed a blessed rosary to each of them. The reception concluded with a picture with Florentino Pérez, the players and the coaches posing along with the Pope.
