Manchester United are refusing to panic despite David Beckham's continued failure to sign a new contract. "I'm sure this will have the right conclusion," said chief executive Peter Kenyon, who also revealed he was still confident of landing West Ham captain Paolo di Canio.

Beckham, who has regularly been left out of United's starting line-up in recent weeks by manager Sir Alex Ferguson, still has 18 months of his present deal to run, but the Premiership champions are desperate to tie up the England captain for a longer term.

Months of talks have so far produced nothing more than stalemate, while a host of foreign powers are circling should the midfielder become available.

Kenyon, who had hoped to see Beckham agree to a new contract before Christmas, is, however, putting a brave face on the situation.

"We are at the stage where David has 18 months to run on his current contract, and I'm still confident, as I am sure he is, that we will come to the right conclusion," he said.

"I think we said we would like to have got it done by Christmas. The fact that it is not yet done, I don't think we should read anything into that."

Meanwhile, Kenyon believes United will land Di Canio in the near future, despite West Ham's rejection of a £2 million bid for the Italian last week.

"We have had discussions, we continue to have discussions and hopefully we can resolve that one fairly quickly," he told PA from Cannes, where he is attending the Football Expo trade fair.

United have until the end of January to register Di Canio for the Champions' League, but it is understood they will need to offer nearer £3 million for a bid to be accepted by the Hammers.
