thats what they told the ref anyway
and spain would have missed out
Why would FIFA be worried about Australia staging a world cup?
There is already talk here in Aus about staging one here, 2014 or 2018. Pretty much all the infrastructure is in place already and Aus has a reputation for staging awesome festivals eg. Olympics, Commenwealth Games, Rugby and Cricket world cups so i don't see any reason to not stage one here.
Aussies love sport so i doubt getting crowds would be a problem plus we generally have some populations of immigrants from pretty much every country in the world to supply support for the differant countries, plus Aus is a fairly cheap place to visit for overseas visitors.

It always comes down to this, when a team loses the match was rigged, the ref was dodgey, As I recall it was nil nil and would have gone to extra time. There was no certaincy that Australia would qualify anyway.
Australia's problem on that day is the same problem thats has haunted them for years. They can not score enough goals. I was there at the MCG when they blew it against Iran. They had 11 against 10 men and should have put the game away long before the penalty.
As for hosting the world cup Frank Lowey has said they are interested but has not made any offial approach at this time.
You should always choose fact over emotion. Support your team with passion but recognise others with equal respect, dignity and a sense of fair play.
Football the greatest game of all.

I agree there is no scandal here.
Just bad refereeing.

re: 'havingfun'
youre right to a point, although a fair few non-australian supporters have also said the refereeing has been very ordinary..
but heh... we lost... ive dealt with it. Yes im still hurting but Im sooooo bloody excited about the Asia Cup next year and every other game Australia plays from now on!

While I don't think FIFA would openly or deliberately plot against Australia, I also think they wouldn't be doing them any favours that they would be for the 'established' teams. I think that's pretty clear looking at the referees which have been given, which I don't think (maybe except for Merk) have been against us, but sub standard:
1) Egyptian Ref in Japan game who gives terrible goal instead of foul and apologises after game, clear indication of poor officiating.
2) Merk in Brazil game who Kewell was able to verbally abuse after the game and somehow not get a suspension (obviously, Merk did something which was deemd too much by FIFA).
3) Poll and the absolute spectacle of a game against Croatia.
It seems if Australia hasn't been targeted, they've certainly been neglected, given poor refs. What strikes me as an Australian is how much more sense it would make to use video refs, perhaps this sort of thing could be avoided.

And cause of this, it is a worry to the future of Soccer/Football in Australia. Instead of having it grow, i reckon it has gone into a decline. The whole of Australia had kids and children staying up watching this, and theres stories of them even crying over it. Not because we lost but because of the way we lost.Originally Posted by Danm_999
And as someone said in another thread Rugby is lookin more like a better sport to Australia. You get video refs in Rugby, People get tackled, slammed into the ground and sometimes spear tackled and still get up.

I dunno, it could go another way, kids could want to avenge Australia by taking up the game themselves. And cause of this, it is a worry to the future of Soccer/Football in Australia. Instead of having it grow, i reckon it has gone into a decline
The WC has received unprecedented publicity this year, I mean I think kids will see that and compare it to AFL and Rugby and in comparison Soccer will seem more attractive. More money, more fans, more international, more passion.
I really hope soccer comes out on top after this WC.
Australia is going to win the world cup in 2018, 2022, 2026 etc
What we need is our best athletes to stop playing AFL and Rugby as opposed to soccer. These games will always drain the talent pool for soccer.

Football/Soccer is hugely popular at grass roots level in Australia, but I think your right in that respect, Australians for the first time are tuning in to the World Cup and saying "Wow, this needs change."Originally Posted by JoshyJ

Video refs and anti-dive measures need to be put in. In works in other sports. At the very least, if FIFA is not interested in using technology like that, get some decent refs.![]()
