Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed his admiration for Manchester City's Nicolas Anelka amid speculation over the French striker's future.
Anelka has been linked with a move away from City in January and Gerrard played with him for Liverpool two years ago.
"Nicolas Anelka was great for us when he was here, he was on fire for us at that time," said Gerrard.
"He is another one of the best strikers in the world I have played with - and he proved it at that time."
Anelka recently suggested in a magazine article he would like to play in the Champions League again, comments which upset manager Kevin Keegan.
Keegan said: "When a player starts to say he wants to join a big club, that alienates the fans because Manchester City is a big club.
"Instead of writing articles, he should concentrate on getting on the pitch and scoring the goals that will take us into the Champions League. That is what he is paid to do.
"He signed a six-year contract here and he still has three years left. That is why some of the fans are upset and I feel the same way."

Without Cisse Liverpool could do with Anelka. Although I am no fan of Le Sulk's attitude I must admit that he has a great deal of talent and perhaps he would be happier at a bigger club such as Liverpool?
