Despite the shock of Xanthi´s quick goal, Panathinaikos played to the maximum for 30 minutes and secured its place in the top of the league by beating their rivals 3-1. The visitors surprised the greek champions when they scored after only 2 minutes through Baikara. Panathinaikos´ s answer was emphatic. The equalizer came from a spectacular Angelos Basinas volley from 30 m. at the 16th minute and six minutes later Rudolf Scacel scored his first goal in the Greek league with a left half volley shoot. With the support of 13.000 fans Panathinaikos produced excellent football and Michalis Konstantinou hit the post after 32 minutes. Angelos Basinas scored again with a shot outside the area at the 62nd minute and the game was all over, wile the champions had the chance of saving some power for their game against PSV Eindhoven.
