Default Italian teams dragging down the standards of the CL

    -optastats story
The winners of the 2002-03 Champions League will post the worst record of defeats for any team winning the competition in its 11-season history.
    _
Either this means that the competition is getting harder to win or that the standard of the eventual winner will not match some of the competition’s great teams.

If Milan win the final, they will have lost four games. This will match the worst performance in terms of defeats by any champion – that of Real Madrid in 1999-2000. The Rossoneri were beaten by Lens and Deportivo La Coruna in the first group stage and defeated by Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the second group stage, although to be fair to Milan, they had already qualified for the next stage when they lost each of these matches.
    _
However, Milan have won only one match over the quarter- and semi-finals.
    _
Juventus have fared even worse. With five defeats already, a triumph for La Vecchia Signora would see them confirmed as the Champions League winner with the worst record of losses in the tournament outright.
    _
Neither team has been overly impressive in attack either. Indeed, Milan are on course to be the lowest scoring Champions League winners of all time with just 1.29 strikes per game. Juve have a better record but even they are well adrift of the most successful attacking Champions of the past.

I dont agree on that. What makes everyone like to blame the Italian teams to cause such 'nonsense'??
I like to remind ya'all that Italian football is all about 'solid-defensive' game.. or 'Catenaccio'. But that doesnt means they would play defense most of the time. Italian clubs has more 'world-classes' players in their team than any clubs from other country and that includes the fowards.
Every leagues from each country has their own way of playing football, like fast-pace and good passing in the Premiership, magnificiant football in the Primier liga, and Solid-defensive game in Serie A..

Agreed. Just look at the "new" Milan that has emerged ever since the club president "promped" the manager to start every match with a 2 striker formation. And with the inclusion of the influential playmaker Kaka in the squad this year, Milan has showed a totally new side to Italian soccer. Need examples? See their 3-1 wins over Juve and Parma in the Serie A, and the 4-1 thumpings of Sparta Prague and Deportivo in the champion's league. All these matches were in the last won in the last month.

But then you still can't say that the're neglecting their defensive responsibilities. Milan's is an all round game.

That's why I think that Milan is the team to beat. Looks like they're going to be unstopable this season.

Even Deportivo striker Walter Pandiani has declared that Milan is, in his opinion, currently the best team in Europe.

The only problem Milan seems to have is matches against smaller clubs like Boca Juniors, which is rather disgraceful, to be honest.

considering milan have aging players in defence like maldini, cafu and pancaro, they are deealing extremely well...i like milan's narrow play - seedorf and gattuso play well cming inside...i admit that i prefer wing play, but when milan play the way they do, it is extremely entertaining...shevchenko, kaka, seedorf and gattuso are my favourite players at milan...

Milan are by far the best team in Europe, even the globe right now. They are firing on all cylinders, they are the unstoppable force. Agree with you about the age thing in defence but even with them they make it look all so easy, Maldini should re-think about his retirement from internation football, he owes himself one more big tournament.
As for the topic, thats absolute crap. For those who watch Italian football you know exactly what I mean and for those who don't, stop looking at crappy stats!
    Forza Juve!

Let me fresh you AC Milan 0-4 Deportivo. Dont think the best team in Europe takes such a result from a team who took a memorable 8-3 against Monaco
