I was gonna make a thread last night for this but I didn't get around to it so here it is now.

The UEFA Cup first round ties will be drawn later on today in Monaco, and Lazio is of course seeded number 1 in the tournament.

We shall post opinions about the draw in this thread.

Hopefuls await UEFA Cup fate

Former winners Parma AC and RSC Anderlecht head the 96 teams in the hat for today's UEFA Cup draw to be held in Monaco at 14.00CET.

Qualifying routes
The Italian and Begian clubs were among the 36 clubs who have secured UEFA Cup football through their domestic league or cup performances last season. They are joined in the draw by the 41 winners of the UEFA Cup qualifying-round ties, which concluded last night, the three UEFA Intertoto Cup 'final' winners and the 16 sides beaten in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

Two-legged matches
The first round will be contested over two legs on 19 September and 3 October. The 96 teams - 48 of them seeded - are divided into six groups of 16 teams based on geographical criteria and in accordance with the club coefficient ranking list.

Seeded teams play non-seeds
Two pots will be prepared for each group, one for the seeded teams and one for the non-seeded teams. This will ensure every tie pits a seeded team against a non-seeded team. The first team drawn will play its first match at home, against the second team drawn.

The draw for the first round of the 2002/03 UEFA Cup has been made in Monaco.

PSG first out of the hat
Paris Saint Germain FC were the first of the 96 teams out of the hat, drawing Újpesti TE of Hungary. Other ties to catch the eye included Sporting Clube de Portugal against FK Partizan of Yugoslavia, while FC Zimbru Chisinau's reward for their surprise qualfiying victory against IFK Göteborg was a meeting with Real Betis Balompié of Spain.

Former winners face CSKA
Former UEFA Cup winners Parma AC of Italy will begin their campaign against PFC CSKA Moskva. Other sides to have lifted the UEFA Cup, England's Ipswich Town FC and Belgium's RSC Anderlecht drew FK Sartid of Yugoslavia and Stabæk IF of Norway respectively. Meanwhile Portuguese club Boavista FC will face Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Italian giants S.S. Lazio have been paired with Xanthi FC.

Hapoel face Austrians
Hapoel Tel-Aviv, who reached the quarter-finals of the competition last season, face a showdown with FC Kärnten of Austria.

Two-legged matches
