UEFA CUP; Semi-Final first-leg; Inter-Feyenoord; 04-04-2002; Thurs 20:45; G.Meazza

Semi Finals:
Inter - Feyenoord
Borussia - Milan
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inter

Many players have during this week and the previous expressed their desire to take the double, Scudetto + UEFA Cup that is, and Dalmat has even said that Inter should forgett the Scudetto on Thursday, and just think of the game against Feyenoord. I believe that that is right... we should consider the UEFA CUP, and the fact that there are potentially only three games left, and the fact that there is a big chance that we might see a Milan derby in the final, should relly spur the players. We got on Sunday a game against Atalanta, so it should not really be that hard to overcome that, but just remember, nothing is won just yet...

This is the first semi-final leg, so what we must do is not,,, NOT concede a goal at home. And with the return of Ronaldo, who has been showing some excellent football to Cuper in the trainings... it is really likely that he will e brought to the game... but he will not start the game I think... but these will:

GK: A.Fontana

RB: J.Zanetti
CB: I.Cordoba
CB: D.Simic
LB: V.Gresko

RM: S.Conceicao
CM: L.Di Biagio
CM: B.Emre
LM: A.Guglieminpietro

AT: M.Kallon
AT: N.Ventola

Subs:
Moreau
M.Matrix
S.Dalmat
C.Seedorf
C.Zanetti
A.Recoba
Ronaldo

Injuries:
G.Georgatos
P.Padalino
M.Serena
G.Sorondo
N.Vivas

Suspended:
F.Toldo (1 game)
F.Farinos (1 game)

Cautioned:
I.Cordoba
L.Di Biagio

I think Vieri will be rested this game, and we can expect a kind of game where Inter will dominate, and I can easily see Inter put atleast 3 goals past Feyenoord, WHO,,, WHO have a defence that right now consistes of reserves, and I thinkt here 4 first choice central defenders are all out...

I dont really know that much about Feyenoord... but if anyone could fill me in!!!

thanks

FORZA INTER

We must take advantage of their missing central defenders. Their defence will be weak. I think that we will win with the result of 2-0.

FEYENOORD is a good team, just good.........nothing more.............even if they were complete they're no match for INTER...but on the other hand they have the greatest GOAL machine in their league........
i really dont think that they'll give us some dificulties....
when we could thrash VALENCIA in front of their FANS(who's by the way on the TOP of the SPANISH league tied with REAL)than FEYENOORD will be easy monney.............C'MON feyenoord.................
just take a look at the team who's gonna play with our once competitive "RIVALS".......if BORUSIA played with us than i would have been concerned.....they're a great team...they play a wery TWISTED soccer.........poor MILAN.....

04-03-2002, 09:50 PM
quite frankly... I dont think he can get injured... one of those muscle injruy wont happen...

I think he will last, I mean, against Brazil, he was looking good. I hope that in the beggining... Ronnie takes it eazy.ö.. I really hope he earns a penalty so he can score...

But I think he is hungry for action, and Mister Cuper said that if Ronaldo is fit, he fits into any team in the world... I agree... he also made some encouraging comments... and said that Ronaldo CAN MAKE THE difference.....

Btw, anyone know if RAI is kind enought to show the game..??
It is on, but usually outside Italy, they block the game... BTW, Eurosport will still show a half hour long summary of the game... be sure to tune in at at Thursday night-Firday morning at 00:15 cet

I really hope we see a fantastic match, there will be approxamately 40,000 Inter-fans, and Feyenoord have over 3.500 fans travelling... which will take the end of the first ring of the San Siro... really good that 40,000 come for an UEFA CUP game... I mena, next season, I expect atleast 70,000 for every champions league game...

also, we are undefeated at San Siro in the UEFA CUP, so RESPECT BABY!!!

here is the soccerage.com preview about the match:

Inter-Feyenoord

AT STAKE

On the contrary to their city arch-rivals Milan, who will face Borussia Dortmund in the other semifinal, Inter don't consider the Uefa Cup as the primary goal of their season.

After many years of huge disappointments, the Nerazzurri are finally close to their first Scudetto since the 1988-1989 season, and even if Cuper's men have done very well in Europe so far, most of their energies are projected towards a domestic league triumph.

Nevertheless, the superb determination that allowed Inter to defeat Valencia at the Mestalla in the second leg of the quarterfinals was a clear evidence of how focused the Nerazzurri are every time they play.

The Uefa Cup was a sort of "punishment" for Feyenoord, who joined this competition after being eliminated at the end of the first phase of the Champions League, but the Dutch side did very well in their three qualifying rounds, eliminating Freiburg and Glasgow Rangers, as well as their fellow countrymen PSV Eindhoven.

Just like their opponents, the Rotterdam team are fighting to win their domestic league: in the Eredivisie, Van Marwjik's men currently trail Ajax by two points, with one match less played.

TEAM NEWS AND PROBABLE LINEUPS

Inter: coach Cuper will miss his regular keeper Toldo, who was suspended for two rounds after having been ejected in the second leg match of the quarterfinal against Valencia and will be replaced by Fontana. Superstar Vieri will likely be rested, while Brazilian striker Ronaldo should start from the bench. Argentinean skipper Javier Zanetti is doubtful due to an injury to his left ankle.

Probable lineup: Fontana; Simic, Materazzi, Cordoba, Emre; Conceiçao, Di Biagio, C.Zanetti, Seedorf; Ventola, Kallon
---------------------------------------

Feyenoord: The major worry for coach Van Marwjik regards the recovery of influential centre-back Patrick Paauwe, who suffered an injury in last Sunday's clash with RKC Waalwjik. Loovens, Van Wonderen and Sprockel have the flu and their conditions will be checked a few hours before the kickoff.

Probable lineup: Zoetebier; Emerton, De Haan, Gyan, Rzasa; Kalou, Bosvelt, Ono, Leonardo; Tomasson, Van Hooijdonk

FORM GUIDE

Inter last 6 matches: DDWWWW. The Nerazzurri are on a roll and keep on doing great both in the Serie A and in the Uefa Cup. Three straight wins in the domestic league allowed Cuper's men to build a 3-point advantage over Roma with five rounds to go, but in the meanwhile Inter also managed to qualify for this semifinal, eliminating Liga giants Valencia despite a 1-1 home draw in the first leg match.

Feyenoord last 6 matches: WDWDWD. The guests have alternated wins and draws in their last six contests, but even the ties can be considered as positive results for them. Those against PSV secured Feyenoord a spot in this semifinal, while the one against RKC Waalwjik in the last round of the Dutch Eredivise allowed them to recover one point on league leaders Ajax, who suffered a tough defeat against Vitesse.

SOCCERAGE PREDICTION

This is a very difficult match to predict. Both teams are fighting for the win in their respective leagues, but this is a semifinal and nobody will give up before the starting whistle. Inter's main worry will be not conceding a goal, so I expect Cuper's men to play with patience: a low-scoring win would be a good result for the Nerazzurri. On their part, the guests will try to exploit their counterattacks, but Inter's defence has been looking quite reliable of late and scoring won't be easy for the Dutch side. Narrow victory for the home team.

Inter 1 Feyenoord 0

And here is the onefootball.com preview:

Stop Christian Vieri from scoring and you stop Inter from winning has been the mantra of coaches throughout Serie A this season, but it is easier said than done.

The same thing goes for Feyenoord striker Pierre Van Hooijdonk in the Uefa Cup this season, and it his prolific strike rate going into the semi-finals that gives the Dutch side hope and Inter coach Hector Cuper cause for concern.

To Feyenoord coach Bert Van Marwijk's relief, Vieri will not be playing on Thursday as Cuper keeps his sights firmly set on capturing Inter's first Scudetto since 1989. But then you could say Van Marwijk deserves a bit of luck.

Like Inter, Feyenoord are still in the hunt on both European and domestic fronts, but their chances in both have been put to the test this week as Van Marwijk watched his defence collapse around him.

Van Marwijk was already without flu victims Kees van Wonderen, Civard Sprockel and Glenn Loovens for Sunday's draw with RKC when he lost Patrick Paauwe to a sprained ankle during that game.

The first three had still not fully recovered on Wednesday but are expected to play, while Paauwe will miss out.

Thankfully for Van Marwijk, he has not had to worry about his attacking options.

Although the Feyenoord coach might have hoped for an easier opponent as his side attempt to reach their first European final since their Uefa Cup win in 1974, in Van Hooijdonk he knows he has the man to deliver when it matters most.

Although the free-kick specialist will not expect a series of chances against Inter, he has once again shown this season that he can make something out of almost nothing.

The Eredivisie's leading scorer has ensured that the Rotterdam club have every chance of lifting the title, and he has almost single handedly shot Feyenoord into the Uefa Cup semi-finals.

Having plotted Freiburg's downfall with a brilliant free kick, Van Hooijdonk set up a quarter-final tie with PSV Eindhoven with two further dead-ball strikes against Rangers - and also turned provider for a third.

The tall striker then scored both Feyenoord goals in the 2-2 draw on aggregate against their Dutch rivals in the quarter-finals, including the last-gasp strike that took the tie to a penalty shoot-out.

While Van Hooijdonk is the Feyenoord dangerman with 29 goals from 39 appearances this season, Jon Dahl Tomasson has also weighed in with a valuable 21 strikes in 35 games.

Although the goals have recently dried up somewhat for the Denmark international, Barcelona remain among his suitors.

Whether the two strikers continue their prolific form against Inter will depend in a large part on the supply from the wings.

Unfortunately for Van Marwijk, just as Ivory Coast forward Bonaventure Kalou has finally appeared to have found his form on the right flank, left midfielder Robin van Persie has found himself in the coach's bad books.

The 18-year-old was left out of the starting line up for the 1-1 draw against RKC Waalwijk after showing up late having forgotten to move his clock forward when the time changed at the weekend.

He came off the bench in the second half, but then incurred the wrath of Van Marwijk by overruling Van Hooijdonk at a free-kick.

Despite that the youngster is still expected to start on the left especially given that Ebi Smolarek is out with injury and Leonardo still hasn't hit top form.

The build up to Thursday's game has been dominated by talk of a possible all-Milan derby as San Siro rivals AC Milan take on Borussia Dortmund in the other semi-final.

But Feyenoord too have a special motivation. The final will take place at their De Kuip stadium in May, and there could be no place like home for Van Hooijdonk to cap a formidable season in Europe.

Half-time report:

Inter is playing some good soccer, and Emre, Conceicao, Kallon have been impressive in the first-half... and it just a time question before we score, and if it was not for poor finishing, we would be up by 2-3 goals...

Subs:
I think the key here is to bring someone with excellent finishing on the pitch. And I think it´s time to bring il Ronaldo on the pitch. My tip for Mister would be to put him in before the 60th minute. Emre will certainly deliver some good balls...

04-04-2002, 09:57 PM
Well, we lost, but cause we will win the Scudetto i dont care much.

Anyway i think we could easily win in Rotterdam with J.Zanetti, C.Zanetti, C.Vieri, Seedorf and Recoba playing the whole match, Toldo.......

I only think, that Ronaldo could play at least the entire second half.

ilfenomeno14
04-04-2002, 10:05 PM
I think Ronaldos insertion came to late, and also Kallon should have stayed on the pitch. At least now Ronnie is starting to play some game... and getting games in his legs... I dont mind seeing him against Atalanta, as a matter of fact, I hope he appears for more than 25 minutes as today... he showed some nice touches, but the thing is, immediately he got 3-4 players on his back, who made some cruel tackles... which left Ronnie on the floor...

But the thing is,,, if we could win in Rotterdam, that would be great... and if we can win Valencia away, we can win Feyenoord away. I think we should go out with our strongest team in the return game...

But the thing is, should we not have wasted that many chances... we could have gone through. Forgett a Milan derby, as the situation is now, Milan is out... and we remain to see if Cuper really gives a shit about UEFA CUP... I mean, we got Atalanta and Brescia... they cannot be that hard can they... I would be more worried if I was a Roma player, as Venezia play good football, but they always go away with either 1, or in most cases 0 points..

Positive:
-Ronaldo is back for sure...
-Emre, the turk, showed some great skill, and hit excellent passes to the attackers, who could not make anything out of them...
-Conceicao, he dominated his right-flank, and I think he should get a shot against Atalanta.
-Cordoba, I must say, he played an excellent game, but that one error he made resulted in AN OWN GOAL!!!

Negative:
-Cuper, his interest for the UEFA CUP aint big, as he left out Ronaldo, Vieri, Recoba, Dalmat, Seedorf, C.Zanetti, J.Zanetti out of the starting XI.
-Ventola + Kallon, this kind of slack finishing makes me throw up. I immediately want Adriano as a third-fourth striker...

We have to win next week against Feyenoord...

Elvis Pressley
04-04-2002, 11:05 PM

That result annoyed me, i mean it's a cup semi and Cuper still does not put out a decent team.We will find out whether he cares for the UEFA in the next leg, which we can still win with a full team.I thought we were better than Feyenoord last night and we could definitely beat them with Bobo,Zanetti,Seedorf etc.

As usual Guly was crap but some things just never change.

are you FREAKIN kiddin me???
......you cant just throw a whole season of great results just becouse of one CRAPPY UEFA CUP trophey(we won that in 98).......INTER caN thrash FEYENOORD any time any place....but the fact is that playing with our STRONGEST squad at FEY.is a HUGE risk......i dont give damn about the UEFA cup and i newer did.....but it's ok if you won it but under one condition.....if you've allready won the scudetto.....and if you won the scudetto it m,eans that you'll be kickin ass in the CL the one and only EUROPEAn glamurous COMPETITION....it will be ok to play with the strongest team if you had allready earned the title(scudetto)or if you're playing with some less quality team....and were talking about BORUSIA,who is unbelevably strong squad with wery quality individuals.....and on the other hand theres the MATCHES with CHIEVO and the last derby of the season with LAZIO.....AND plus were playing outside the bounds of SAN SIRO.....do you really want CUPER to look like a fool in front of whole EUROPEAN SOCCER EXTRAVAGANZA???i dont think so pal.....CUPER is an expert for the EUROPEAN cups he has earned that reputation with three finals in the most prestigeous competition in the world(on a club level)with MAJORKA and two times in a row with VALENCIA....and the last time last year he had the trophey just a breath away from him....but the experiance of the BAVARIAN tigars....spoked for it self..we could'easily won last night game.but the new SINONYM for the word IDIOT...................V-E-N-T-O-L-A was just too dumb to score.did you sw what he missed after the CORNER.i mean the most rediculous missed shot was the one against JUVENTUS last year when after the assist from elcino BOBO missed hit the ball over the goal in fron of 1meter and on an emty goal.but last night VENTOLA performance and that miss of the AEON was just too amazing.............:silly:.....forget the whole thing man.....we will probably thrash them at their stadium.......we just werent LUCKY last night.....but as i ALLWAYS SAY."LUCK WILL TURN IT'S BACK WHEN YOU NEED IT THE MOST".that's why you syhould newer leave something to LUCK........although isnt bad when the BITCH IS AROUND......;)............

Well, you can in a way say that Ventola is not that good. I mean, first of all, he looks kind of slow on the pitch, and he really is not any natural goal-scorer, I mean, should Vieri get those kind of chances, where he is excellent in putting in goals from close-range.

But many people are being unfair when judging Ronaldo, I mean Elvis, what did u expect Ronaldo to do? Score goals.... I hoepd that he would, but he could have scored a goal, but he got totally no help from his team mates... but was also unhappy, and he said he realy wanted to turn things around...

But, Im pretty sure we can win feyenoord away. I can say that we will win, but im doubtful wether it will be by two goals. If we win 1-0, over time is expected, and I do not think Cuper wants to waste so much energies in that.

But here is the grades I would give...

A.Fontana: 6.5, he was pretty good, and I expect him to see as a back-up next season to, the goal, was not his fault.

D.Simic: 6, he played pretty well, except for one time, when some dutch player made a fool out of him.

M.Materazzi: 5, he did not play well this game, and he plays veyr rough, very ugly. I hope we can replace this guy for next season, maybe Nesta.

I.Cordoba: 6.5, put it this way, if you take away the error of the own goal, Cordoba was excellent this game, but if Cordoba would not have cleared, the ball would still end up in the net... so good job to him.

V.Gresko: 5, I mean, he had no chance against Kalou. What was wrong with him, I hope Georgatos or Serena return.

S.Conceicao: 6, he was pretty good, and created several oppurtunities, but he wasted atleast that many too.

L.Di Biagio: 6, he was fighting well, but sometimes Di Bi shows signs of nervousity..

B.Emre: 7, the only way this super-turk was taken of was because he was tired, he played an excellent game, delivering balls to the "bad" attackers we had, but they could not convert those passes into goals.

A.Guly. 5.5, what shoudl u say, he is to weak in these games, or he is weak in every game. people say that he is used for tactical reasons, can someone explaing to me what the ***k that means?
He showed some nice skill, but other than that... nuttin.

N.Ventola: 4.5, I dont think I have ever seen someone waste so many chances in my hole life. I mean, to miss an open goal, from about 10 centimeters... there is something the ***k wrong with you.

M.Kallon: 6, atleast this chap worked his ass of, but also he missed with the goal mouth open from one meter..

C.Seedorf: 6.5, the dutch monster imediately showed that he is an excellent player, hitting a good corner... also very agressive, and excellent defensively... how many "steals" has he made this season?

Ronaldo: 6, he was not so good, but what do u expect, the comeback is made, and Im looking forward to see Ronaldo in the Inter shirt...

A.Recoba: 6, also good, but not that interested,,, created nothing on his left-flank...

We missed a lot of chances, you are rite. And yeah, Scudetto is more important for us. But in Holland i think that we will win no matter if Bobo plays or not. Lets hope that i'm rite.

the only thing I am worried about is that Materazzi might be out for 2-4 months... he did sprain his knee... and if the test confirm that there is ligamen damage, he will miss the world-cup...

so anyway, the next leg, we should start with Recoba-Ronaldo up-front I think...

...C'MON man.....you're exagerating.......if he damadget a LIGAMENT he wont be able to train.....and look here....

APPIANO GENTILE - Practice began at 10:30 this morning, to polish things up for tomorrow's match against Atalanta. Training began with a routine warm up. After the warm up Materazzi , Simic , and Ventola continued with an Intensive workout, while the rest of the squad went with Alfano (team trainer) for a light workout

take it easy my friend....i was shocked too....when i saw him on that "BED"....holding his hands on his HEAD which is common thing for the JUVE and aspecialy for MILAN fans....:silly:......sign for DEPRESSION....but when i saw him entering again i thought it isnt too bad,but i was still frighten cos as i said before those things are painfull when you'll get up in the morning.....but when i've read this HUGE STONE fell from my HEART........:smoking:......
