A little bit of History

The goal that never was

In the early 1980s the race for the Scudetto was strictly a two-horse affair. On one side were the perennial Italian giants in Juventus, on the other capital club Roma whose trophy cabinet had done nothing but collect dust for years. And while both clubs have had baron spells in the last two decades, the immense rivalry between the two is back as they both battle for the legendary Scudetto for the second consecutive season.

There is a history between the two sides. A history clouded in controversy and one that many fans still remember to this day. The epics games of the past may be archived but an incident in May 1981 is still one of the major talking points when the words Roma and Juventus are mentioned in the same sentence.

It was May 10, 1981 and Juve were playing host to the capital club. It was first against second when just minutes from the end Bruno Conti crossed from the left for Maurizio Turone to dive in and head the ball home past the hapless Dino Zoff. It was a goal that has gone down in calcio history, a goal that seemed to have been inspired from the Gods, but it was a goal that never stood.

Zoff immediately raised his hand to appeal for offside and the linesman agreed. Referee Bergamo had no option but to whistle the irregularity and the goal was disallowed. Television evidence suggests that it was a close call but that the linesman made the wrong decision. Juventus went on to win the title, two points ahead of the Giallorossi.

It understandably became a major talking point. The respective Presidents Dino Viola of Roma and Juve’s Giampiero Boniperti swapped insults and words. Juve played on the fact that it was too tight for the linesman to call correctly. Viola wasn’t overly impressed by their argument and somewhat sarcastically claimed: "It is always a matter of centimetres," when it came to anything to do with Juventus. Boniperti replied by sending Viola a ruler in the post.

The following season saw the Juventus-Roma duel interrupted by Fiorentina. The Giallorossi’s season was virtually over after Carlo Ancelotti damaged knee ligaments in October 1981. The Bianconeri went on to win the title just one point ahead of the Viola, and eight clear of third place Roma.

By the 1982-83 campaign, the Juventus-Roma encounters were like derbies. The capital side went into their Week 22 clash as the League leaders, five points ahead of the Bianconeri who at the time were third. Yet the Turin side knew that their opponents could be beaten as the game earlier in the season saw Gaetano Scirea net the crucial goal in a 2-1 win.

There was plenty at stake and like this season’s championship Juve were having to play catch-up. But it was Roma that took the lead through Falcao only for the gifted Michel Platini to draw the sides level, before the Old Lady’s Sergio Brio nodded in the winner late on.

Roma did in the end win the Championship but in four games against Juve that season, they also met in the Coppa Italia, they lost them all. Honorary Juve President Umberto Agnelli wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to ‘congratulate’ the Roma President. "Viola must be a proud man," he said. "He’s won half of all the championships that Roma have collected." That was one for the record.

The following season saw the two protagonists again swap blows but it was Juve that were crowned campioni. Roma’s season had been disrupted by the departure of Pietro Vierchowod who left for Samp, while Viola and Liedholm clashed on a number of occasions regarding the Swede’s financial aspects of his contract.

At the end of that season Liedholm was not offered a new deal and he left for Milan. In his place Viola wanted Juventus’ Trapattoni, a wish that he never got. The two had talks but it was alleged that Trap didn’t want the job because he didn’t "want to get fired for finishing second." In the end Viola took on Sven Goran Eriksson.

The 1984-85 season saw both rivals struggle and they both finished outside of the top five but the following year the two-horse race was back on. Roma had signed Zibi Boniek, known as ‘bello di notte’ for his inspirational night game displays, from Juventus and it looked as if the Giallorossi would finish top.

At one stage Juve had an eight point lead over their rivals which was somehow wiped out by Roma. The penultimate game of the season saw Eriksson’s side face an already relegated Lecce at the Olimpico. Three points in the bag? Don’t bet on it, the Giallorossi lost 3-2 to literally hand the title to Juventus which they gladly took off their hands.
