Antonio Cassano’s hopes of making the starting line-up against Udinese this Sunday were scuppered by a relatively serious injury in today’s training session.
The 18-year-old has torn a right thigh muscle and doctors predict he will be out of action for approximately three weeks.
Newcomer Cassano made an impact with a stunning goal against Verona last week, his first Serie A strike in over a year, and with the absence of the suspended Francesco Totti aspired to a starring role this weekend.
However, Vincenzo Montella has been included in the squad travelling to Udine. It is the Italian international’s first call-up since undergoing knee surgery in November. He was originally pencilled in to return in early February but the 27-year-old has made a speedy recovery.
Nonetheless he lacks match-fitness so Montella will start from the bench in favour of Gabriel Batistuta and Marco Delvecchio.
