Torsten Frings revealed on Friday that preliminary talks over a move to Arsenal had broken down and he now expects to remain in the Bundesliga.

“There was vague contact with Arsenal, but at the moment I don't want to move to England,” said the Werder Bremen midfielder, who also recently rejected an offer from Hertha Berlin.

The 25-year-old is now expected to join Bayer Leverkusen or Borussia Dortmund, although a contract extension at the Weserstadion remains possible.

“We are on a good track at Werder and, before I make my final decision, I will definitely speak to coach Thomas Schaaf again,” he told Kicker.

“The Bremen offer is OK, but it's an open secret that I could earn much more money elsewhere and becoming a regular Germany international seems easier at a bigger club. I will make up my mind by the end of January."

Frings recently described himself as the best midfielder in Germany and believes he has deserved more than just two full appearances in the national side.

He spent his first four years at Werder in defensive midfield but has developed a more offensive-minded role this season, helping Bremen up to move into third in the table.

"I regard myself as a playmaker. I am too good to just destroy the oppositions' game. I know that I am no Zidane, but I can do better than I have done so far," explained Frings recently.

"There are no better midfielders in the Bundesliga than me. Obviously much depends on your form, but I don't have to hide behind Sebastian Kehl, Sebastian Deisler or Michael Ballack.

"I don't know why I haven't had a real chance to prove myself in the
national team. I was very disappointed that, after two substitute spells, I was dropped from the side. If I were Rudi Voller, I would pick Torsten Frings.

"Maybe it has to do with the fact that Werder has no lobby at the German FA. The top clubs are more important for the national team and that's why I'd like to play for one of them."

Frings' all-action style relies on his impressive fitness and allies fine vision with good shooting ability. Indeed, he seems more suited to the hustle and bustle of the Premiership than the more technical game preferred in southern Europe.
