There are many good players that will not be able to play in the 2002 world cup because their national side failed to quailfy. But who will be missed the most. My opinion may be a corrupt do to the fact I love Manchester United I think that it has to be Giggs. Not only will he not feature in this world cup. But here is my list in order...

1. Giggs
2. Shevchenko
3. Nedved
4. Van Nistelrooy
5. Kluivert
6. Berger

harry kewell as well i think, giggs is certainly the worst i think, he got superb talent, but couldn't complete in the highest level of football

Giggs can't compete at the highest level of talent? He does every year for Manchester United.

Giggs is a very exciting player to watch. His skills are good enough for any level. As a left winger I don't know who I would choose in front of him.

Robero Carlos is not bad and Candela is playing good. also Manfreedini is not bad. There many good left wingers but I doubt any one is as good as giggs. Is he injured or something? I havent seen him play in the last MANU game!

Pulled his hamstring before the match with Bayern. He is out until the new year.

I read an article last week or the week before that quoted Figo. He said Giggs certainly reserved a nomination - ahead of Beckham. I agree Giggs is deserves it more.

I couldnt agree more..Giggs is a legend and if he had been plaing for Brazil (where he would fit right in with) he would of gotten alot more recognition!!.......:D

I dont think that International football is a better standard then club football. In the tournaments like the CL you have the best players in the world up against each other, Teams can pick the best players from around the world and make amazing teams. Milan of the 90's, Liverpool of the 80's, they would all beat most international teams. There are alot of clubs around now which are also better then most International teams. Bayern, United, Barca, Madrid, Juve, Inter, Milan etc.
The world cup is undoubtadly the best, but it doesnt necessarily mean that you have the best or greatest team (when I say that I mean team as club or international team).
I love the world cup. And there is more tension to it. And players like Giggs would be on the best teams in the international scene if there were transfers. Obviously there isnt, but you dont have top do well on the W>C scene to be a great player. Look at Figo, he has never played in it either. Rivaldo didnt exactly set the lat world cup on fire did he?? :smoking:

When the world's best play for their league teams they do it for money. When they play on their national teams, it's for something else. Patriotism, reputation, glory, whatever you want to call it, it makes for more emotion and more dramatic football.

the great taffarel ???

you realize this is 2001 right ?

The great Taffarel will have just turned 36 by the Copa - even your old man won a World Cup at 40 (and let us not go into Italy beating Brazil as I will only cry!!). I do not like the look too much of Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo) and Marcos (Palmeiras). Dida would be my choice in the absence of the great Taffarel.

Dida?!? Oh, please, God, spare us of having to watch Dida defending Brazil in a WC... it would be disastrous!
IMO calling Dida for the WC would be like bungee-jumping with spaghetti threads. :D

I bow to you because you are in (hot) Rio and I am far away in (cold) Inglaterra - so you are in the middle of things. Your choice would be.................? Educate me, man. Has Helton's star fallen and Julio Cesar's risen?

The truth is, there's no unanimous keeper for Brazil. I personally would choose Rogerio, as he looks just right for the part: good leadership, able to play as an extra man in defense if the team is too advanced (you know, like Dutch keepers usually do, leaving the area and using his feet). But I realize he has shortcomings, his overblown ego being probably the biggest. But he would be my choice.

Julio Cesar, who will probably be Brazil's starter soon, is rising fast and has been truly outstanding the past few months. He would be the second goalie - and if you don't like Rogerio, IMO Julio Cesar would be the logical option.

Marcos has been shaky the last few matches, but let's give him a break, he went through the Qualifiers' liquifier campaign and didn't do all that badly. He's competent, strong-willed and can still contribute to Brazil. But he's not my first choice.

Other name would be São Caetano's Silvio Luiz, who's currently in great form. Dida would be good news for our opponents, as Severus reminded us. ;)

Why not compare Taffarel with 25-step Zoff!! If only the arbitros were doing their jobs in the 1970s and 1980s, Italy would have conceded more indirect free kicks in the penalty box than any country in history (there was a 4-step rule for any of our younger amigos).

THE GREAT TAFFAREL,THAT WON ITALY IN 1994 WITH A HELP OF THE MAGNIFIC ROBERTO BAGGIO.

A shame about Baggio (sincerely) but out of the 2 (and I am biased) Italy as World Champions in 1994? Really, you have to earn it. Brazil merited it (and no bias).
