REPORT Denmark 1 Holland 1

Saturday 10th November 2001

A late penalty from Martin Jorgensen was enough to earn Denmark a draw in Saturday's entertaining friendly against Holland in the Parken stadium.

The Danes dominated the opening stages and Holland keeper Oscar Moens was in the thick of the action as early as the second minute when he parried a Jon Dahl Tomasson shot.

Patrick Kluivet then tested Denmark keeper Thomas Sorensen with a subtle header, before Moens had to make another brilliant save.

This time the Dutch stopper kept out Dennis Rommedahl's shot from point-blank range after the PSV Eindhoven star had been set up by debutant Christian Poulsen.

The game flowed from end to end throughout the first half. Kluivert went close with another header on the half-hour mark, before Denmark looked to hit back moments later though Rommedahl, who brought another save out of Moens.

In the final minute of the first half, Holland won a penalty when Jan Heintze was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area. Chelsea hit man Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink found the net from the spot, but only after Sorensen had got one hand to his shot.

The second half was not quite so open, and a large number of substitutions from both sides disrupted the flow. Holland had the majority of the possession, but it was the Danes who created the best chances.

Peter Madsen headed against the post from a corner in the 69th minute, and then missed the target with another header - this time from Jan Michaelsen's cross in the 76th minute.

Madsen finally contributed to his team's goal, though, when he was brought down in the area six minutes before the end. Jorgensen fired home the resulting spot kick as the game finished level.

Denmark coach Morten Olsen was pleased with his side's display. "I was very impressed. It was much better than our last qualifier against Iceland," said the former Ajax boss.

"We made eight changes in the second half but still managed to get back into the game against one of the strongest teams in the world.

Denmark midfielder Christian Poulsen - making his first international appearance - found himself up against Edgar Davids, but insisted that he was not impressed with the Juventus star.

"He is just another player like me," he explained. "To be honest, today it was just like playing another Superliga game in Viborg," added the 21-year-old.
