Brazil supporters and ex-stars demand Romario recall
RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 9 (AFP)
The furore caused by Brazil's defeat to Bolivia has led to widespread calls for the immediate return of 1994 World Cup star Romario to the national team ahead of their final group qualifier next week.
"In decisive moments the little one (Romario) used to pop up and save the country's skin," said one headline here Friday as the only country to have qualified for every World Cup mulled over its potentail absence from the 2002 showpiece.
Brazil's hopes of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea hit a new low after the former triple world champions went down 3-1 in La Paz on Wednesday.
Although Brazil sit fourth in their qualifying group, fears of dropping to fifth place - which would force Brazil into an unprecedented two-legged qualifying play-off, against Australia - have led many to call for veteran Romario to be included in coach Luis Felipe Scolari's plans.
Romario, 35, has been out of the team for some time but is currently the top goalscorer in the Brazilian league - which has not gone unnoticed in the country which is finding it hard to revive the goalscoring form of the golden years.
Going in the veteran's favour is the memory of his performance during the 1994 World Cup qualifiers when he was called up to bolster a struggling Brazil side.
He then went on to become the star of that tournament where Brazil claimed their fourth World Cup title.
Romario's call-to-arms was met with the cool-headed delivery of a late rescue package - in the decisive qualifier against Uruguay, he scored two vital goals to seal victory and qualification.
His cause has even been taken up by the governor of the state of Maranhao where Brazil will host Venezuela in their final group qualifier on November 14.
"The national team needs someone who can score goals, and Romario scores goals. He is loved by all of the supporters," said Roseana Sarney.
Jairzinho, who was world champion with Brazil in 1970, joined the chorus of players and supporters alike for Romario's return: "Romario is still the best forward we have who zcan score goals."
Scolari, meanwhile, is under growing pressure to deliver and was roundly criticised by Brazilian Federation (CBF) caretaker president Alfredo Nunes.
"What I seen in La Paz was unbelievable. A coach who doesn't have the courage to replace Rivaldo, that's just not right."

I think its time big phil did the right thing and recall4ed romario.. or does he think this is a big game.. we lose we go back home feel sorry and come back the next day and get caught up with our daily routine.. this a country's reputation for god's sake..

Romario or no Romario, it's our obligation to win. No excuses, no explanations - we need to win. A place in the World Cup can be acquired with a simple victory. I would like a sound 4x0 or 6x0 victory, but the 3 points are really all that matters.

But frankly, I'm weary of all the incompetence, cowardice and excuses. Today, the single reason I'm against firing Scolari is my belief that we would have to start all over again from square one with a new coach; but hey, common sense has never stopped CBF's officials from firing and hiring coaches. Scolari's job hasn't been actually very good, but I don't think he had the proper conditions to work, what with the short time for training and all.

I want to see Brazil defeating Venezuela, nothing else. Their coach is full of bravado and self-confidence, which is all very cute and entertaining, but smashing them was never a problem. Modern soccer is very competitive and everybody runs like hell, and we all understand that there's no such thing as easy games anymore, but Venezuela SVCKS! Let's BEAT them already and get these qualifiers over with!

(Can you tell I'm tired of waiting for the Seleção to shape up?)

I too just want to win and get the eliminatorias over with! What a novela as the Brazilians say! Changing the tecnico will achieve zero. I am sure he is a strong man and when 160 million get off his back after (?) we qualify then perhaps we can have a little beauty in our game. I do not like the three man defence but I think he deserves the chance to take the most successful in World Cup history and try for his place in the history books. Please do it tomorrow guys si we can all get some sleep at last.

A Brazilian 'paper today featured a headline that summed up the situation nicely: "Obligation or Ridicule". It's not a confortable situation, if u stop to think about it: If Brazil wins, it's nothing more than what's expected of us; if we don't...
  :fed-up:  :annoyed: :red-card:

Today is the morning of November 14th - tonight we'll play Venezuela for our WC spot.

And you heard it here first - IF and WHEN we qualify, there'll be a LOT of Brazilian fans poppin' up in WSB, full of arrogance and bravado, saying stuff like "the whole world fears Brazil again", "we're number one favorites" and "we're four-time winners and we'll stomp over everyone in our way to the fifth Cup", and generally immodest stuff.

Of course, once qualified (IF we do, WHEN we do) we MIGHT actually win the WC, even with our lame qualifiers' campaign. But even so, our current situation still demands caution and hard work.

I'm actually more concerned with the future than specifically with the next WC, believe me or not. If we don't get more organized and change several things (like our calendar for instance) we'll be doomed to repeating this suffering. Our biggest problem isn't the coach, or the players, or even the format of the qualifiers: It's our own disorganization.

But let me humbly ask for your support in today's seemingly-easy match. I ask our Argentinian, Portuguese, British, Spanish, Italian and wherever-you-may-come-from WSB members: support Brazil. I can personally say I have NEVER whished for other great squads to be disqualified, as I like victory MUCH MORE when the opposition is powerful (I mean, we take pride in having beaten the Azzurra twice in WC finals, because we acknowledge their quality). What's fun or magnificent about beating underdogs? Give me the great opponents anytime.

When Argentina went to face Australia in WC '94 qualifiers, I supported Argentina because I wanted them in the WC. I don't necessarily expect them to support us - but, despite the arrogant Brazilians who may eventually come here if we qualify, don't hate us. :)

Of course every person who loves the game wants Brazil at the World Cup, with some good nations missing already to add Brazil to that list would make things even more disastrous. So I'll support you this evening.

I understand the problem of disorganization a lot better than most people here cause my country has exactly the same problem. So I know where you are coming from.

Well, I am an Englishman who puts Brazil before his own country (no abuse please - it is what you feel). I just hope we get there - this is how bad it has become. I won't be boasting if/once we qualify but ask me if we can win it and I will say 'yes' - albeit a whisper not a shout. If I had a pound for every time someone said about the calendar............ Brazil has major problemas when it come to such things but it can be rectified. Self interest is all I am afraid. If the great Flamengo really do get relegated are we really sure they will play in Serie B next season? What, no court case saying something or appealing something or other? Do not bet against it - it has been done before. Futebol utopia: go back to February 1970 when we picked 22 players, took them out of the clubs and dedicated the next 4 months of their futebol lives to winning the Tri. Even then we had a change of tecnico!! Futebol utopia 2: Brazil announce their 22 for an amistoso x (say) Poland. Here is the list: Marcos, Cafu (Flamengo), Ronaldo (Flamengo), Rivaldo (Sao Paulo), Emerson (Atletico Mineiro), Amoroso (Corinthians)............ Get the message? 22 players playing for BRAZILIAN clubs. Get the economy right and keep the talent IN THE COUNTRY. OK, amigos, I will stop taking the tablets.

LANCE!, Brazil's leading sports newspaper (our Corriere dello Sport ;) ) has published an article today on the subject of humiliating, knock-off-the-Cup qualifiers' last-round results suffered by other great footballing nations. The stories draw porttraits of our own worst nightmare, which would be a bad result today (or against Australia later).

Struggling for a spot in WC 58, Italy only had 4 points in a qualifiers' group that included Portugal and Northern Ireland. The final, decisive match was in Belfast against N Ireland. And in the first 28 minutes, McIllroy and Cush scored, leaving the Azzurra in a dire situation, needing a victory. Dino da Costa scored once, the Irish team withdrew and the Italians pressured up until the very last minute, missing the goal by inches, hitting the post, doing teathrical gestures and ultimately being beaten. Italia out of WC '58.

In the quals for WC '70, Argentina needed to defeat Peru at home to qualify, after collecting two away defeats, against Bolivia and Peru. But they only got a 2x2 draw which left them out of the WC. Peru later put on quite a good performance in the Cup.

England needed to beat Poland at Wembley to qualify for WC '74. They never managed to claw out that one, as a 1x1 result disqualified them. It must be said that Poland was no weakling at the time: They had Lato, Zmuda, Zszarmach and Deyna, having won the Olympic soccer gold medal two years earlier. So this would be a less-embarassing result, I suppose.

And in the quals for WC '94, of course, France needed ONE point to claim their WC spot. And they failed to get it from Israel or Bulgaria, so they were out too. Later, Bulgaria did quite well in the Cup itself.

Hope our team doesn't join this gallery.

If we fail tonight perhaps we should consider withdrawing and letting the Aussie have a direct route. On reflection.............

And i believe that.....on the accosaion most team will tremble to us......they see a trained and confident team, passing the ball around, creating chances and opportunities....they all tremble.

Let's go a get what is ours...THE WORLD CUP!
