i think you missed Azerbaijan in the pole:silly: may be next time

I voted for Croatia they still have the best achievement for the last years so far
the second is Romania the most consistent team from Eastern Europe
third I would have saiid Yugoslavia but since they were not able even to qualify for WC so I choose Poland or Chechs cant figure out poles already qualified and Chechs are good

I would love to give my vote for USSR cauz they had the best killers and bonebreakers in the world, they could shoot the ball with the speed of 150km/h over 50 meters wide just like sending another spaceship to poor Mir station. and they had good contacts with others scoring 6 goals in one game in WC just for fun!

I voted for Czech Republic as first

I think they are a great squad and a big threat to any team when they are in good form

I see things this way...

1. Czech Republic
2. Romania & Poland
3. Yugoslavia, Croatia, Russia
4. Slovenia
5. Ukraine

I don't see how Croatia is any better than Yugoslavia, sure the results for the WC Qualifier show it, but what about the results for the Euro Qualifier when YUGOSLAVIA eliminated Croatia

We had many conflicts and problems during our qualifying campaign and without these I have no doubt in my mind that we would have finished 1st in our group without a problem

The only reason why we tied Slovenia in the crucial game in Beograd is because of the nasty weather (something to do with it) and because of Miha being injured

Slovenia used this opportunity and played a game with the tactic completely prepared for his absence

They would defend, knowing that all they needed was a draw and whenever one of our players would come in the area 30 - 35m out, they would give them a good, hard tackle and give us a free kick knowing that we wouldn't be able to punish them because practically no one else in the world can kick a free kick like Miha, nevermind the Yugo NT

Well anyway, thats the way I see it

And I think it would look something like this if every of these teams mentioned in this poll were at their best form

1. Yugoslavia, Czech Republic
2. Croatia, Romania
3. Poland, Russia, Slovenia
4. Ukraine

croatia got bronze!!! none of eastern european natinals got any medals for last years except them
yugoslavia received nothing from Euro although I liked the team especially young players coming on subs i dont remember names. Yugos problem was in those whistling stadium in Euro.

I voted Czech Republic, simply cause I've seen them play and I've seen Sparta Prague play, they are definately the best team in Eastern Europe at the moment.

Look at their midfield, Berger, Nedved, Rosicky(this guy is figo-potential from what I've seen), Poborsky.

Sparta Prague has a great team, I don't know if any of you guys watched their games, but I was impressed, with players like Hubschmann, Jarosik, Hartig, Grygera and these are all very young players. They reached the second phase in the CL.

Their defence however could be better but players like Repka compensate that fact, their attack is coming together after a couple of years where I had doubts, Milan Baros is one of Eastern Europes biggest attacking talents and Koller and Lokvenc are established players in the Bundesliga(a League that is underestimated by alot of people), all in all the Czechs have a great team already and they have a great future.

Our NT at the moment as our entire football is very weak, we sure as hell aren't the best in EE, we were during the WC qualifications back in 96/97.

I think this is something that almost every country goes through, just look at Poland as well as the Czechs. So I still have hope left for the future.

if i had to pick 3 i would say czech, poland, russia.

normally jugoslavia would be in my picks, but they seem in the middle of a crisis.

by the way- isn't greece also tchnically eastern eurpoean? we ARE in the balkans- do we not count because we are in the EU- because we are not slavs? just curious really (not that we are any good :o )

Yeah I think you aren't considered part of Eastern Europe, first because you aren't Slavs and secondly because you are on the southern tip of Europe.. (you are more south than east Europe)

Although I do believe you are the better allround side you can't deny that the Slovenians have built a pretty good team, they wouldn't have have gotten to second place in a tough group if they didn't. And may I emphasise the word team, cause it's not a collection of individually good players like with my country Yugoslavia but more a unified team, successfully done by Katanec.

The dumbest thing Romania can do now is to underestimate Slovenia, they really have got a couple of good players. Their names might not be that big yet but still they are good players, just look at Acimovic and Nastja Ceh, a good striker in front Osterc, I've seen them play away against tough teams like Russia, Switzerland and of course Yugoslavia, if I recall correctly they beat Switzerland and tied against Russia and Yugoslavia, now all they'll be needing against you is a tie.

I've seen Hagis' comments about him being certain of Romania having reached the World Cup already, to be honest I don't believe that's the smartest thing to say just before a crucial qualifier. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the near future will bring, all I'm saying is that I wouldn't be surprised if Slovenia possibly made it.

that was their greatest effort to world football, but still cannot understand how they succeeded to win their qualifying group.

Well let me start by saying I think you've got the top 3 right, although I'd say 1 Czech republic 2 Poland and 3 Romania, there is not much to comment, Yugoslavia deserves to be number 6 cause we've been underachieving for the last 2 years. (Croatia 8: well just be happy there are no croatians here :D)

There is one little thing I don't understand, Hungary 22?? You're clearly suffering from an inferiority complex, I read your post in the Macedonian forum as well and I'll be honest when I say I predict a win for Hungary tomorrow.

the fifa ranking list does say so (that we are better), but the "hungarian disease" in the last 15 years is that they just do not want to run, they just wait for the ball coming to their feet, cause they're tired after 10 minutes.
the latest results dont cause too much optimism.
you have to understand: after having one of the best teams ever in football history (30s, 50s and also 60s), the recent years are quite depressive for hungarian football aficionados (especially for me with 2 uncles winning olympic gold medal in football, one in 52, the other in 64&68 and playing in wc 1/4 finals), so it has to be done with irony and humour!

thats not easy, most of them obviously prefer to fight each other in hungarian forums (depending on the fav club, they call each other jew/gypsy/nazi/kommunist/andsoon), and the self-irony hungarians got to have referring to our nt, is not so easy to transfer to others.

4.Yugoslavia (great potential, a lot of stars)

Honestly Slovenia is somewhere on 5th place but that is just because of history of other nations (we are a young country!)

no way, I am from kaposvár and budapest, but I have lots of yugo friends (i.e. slovenians, croats, serbs, bosnians, macedonians, montenigrinians, vojvodinians) here in germany,
I`ve been once to subotica and sombor, enjoyed it a lot,

so we all can be yugo-nostalgic a bit, as most of my madjarski friends escaped via yugo in the old days (not the only reason)

Israel isn't a real Uefa team becasue they played in Oceania, and AFC before and Uefa sort of "adopted" them.

Croatia isn't the best, but are certainly in the top 3 based on qualification, beating Belgium, Italy and conceding least goals in the world. With class in defense like Tudor, Kovac, Simic and Zivkovic, we have the best defense by far. Probably one of the worst midfields and a good attack with Bokcsic, Olic and Maric.

Croatian fans are 100 times better, though Turkish fans are better than us, only by a little. We had the loudest fans of France 98, that was confirmed by France Football.

Estonia are a very hard team to beat when they are playing at home. They close-up the game and frustrate you. Full credit if you manage to beat them, but I'm hoping for a draw. ;)

Actaully i think im gonna go wiht Bulgaira. They are so dam azmazing in Sofia its like they have a 12th man on the field.
