The Melbourne Knights have won the first NSL match played indoors, defeating a gallant 10-man South Melbourne 1-0 under the roof at Colonial Stadium.
South battled to stay in the match after key defender Steve Iosifidis was dismissed midway through the first half for a foul on powerful Knights striker Joel Porter.
At 7:30, the scheduled start time, there were still several thousand fans outside the stadium waiting to get in so kick-off was delayed 20 minutes.
Eventually, a crowd of 10,396 would make it through the gates.
With Peter Buljan active and Steve Manceski on the end of several neat build-ups, South Melbourne made the early running.
But the contest turned on Iosifidis’ controversial send-off in the 22nd minute.
With Mehmet Durakovic in support and Michael Petkovic on the goal line, Iosifidis checked the bullocking Porter just outside the area.
Referee Craig Zetter reached for his pocket and to Iosifidis’ amazement out came the red.
“The question has to be asked about the man in the middle,” a furious South Melbourne coach Eddie Krncevic said of the penalty. “If you’ve got a man behind you it’s a yellow card, it’s not a red card. There was a bit of a dive as well.”
Asked how these issues should be resolved, Krncevic said: “We need to start getting competent referees, full stop.”
In damage control mode Krncevic dropped Fausto De Amicis back to cover for Iosifidis and brought on Michael Santilli for the unlucky Manceski.
South’s containment plan worked effectively until the stroke of half-time when the Knights won a corner on the left and Steve Horvat rose unchallenged to head powerfully past Petkovic from 10 metres.
The Knights had by far the better of the second half but found it impossible to pass or to breach the South defence marshalled superbly by Durakovic with great support from De Amicis and young Patrick Kisnorbo.
Petkovic played his part too with a string of excellent saves.
“It was a bit of a soft goal - the keeper made a mistake coming out for it - but I’ve got nothing but praise for my players,” Krncevic said in his assessment of the match.
Krncevic’s Melbourne Knights counterpart, Andrew Marth, was content with the win, while also said while he thought the crowd was disappointing he had no complaints about the venue.
“We’re very happy with the result. Both teams needed three points and I’m happy that we got them,” Marth said. “If anything the pitch was a bit soft but the stadiumn is world class. We’d like to play ere every week.”

Perth’s winning streak reached five at Perth Oval tonight when the Glory’s 2-1 victory over Sydney United continued to underline their title favouritism.
Despite going into the game under an injury cloud, Wolves recruit Matt Horsley was best afield for the home side, while keeper Jason Petkovic helped ensure the Glory would take all three points with a couple of fine saves.
Early in the game it was United who had three chances to score, the best of them a Vince Savoka scissor effort from 20 metres that forced a brilliant save from Petkovic, but after the visitors failed to capitalise, Perth opened the scoring on 27 minutes.
Michael Santalab was penalised for holding Perth striker Bobby Despotovski 22 metres out, and Despotovski found Damian Mori, one of three decoy runners, with the free kick.
The NSL’s all-time leading goalscorer knocked the ball on to his right to steady after taking possession, before smashing a curling shot past a diving United keeper Brett Hughes.
Just after half-time the Glory doubled their lead when a stinging Brad Moloney strike deflected off Horsley, but Ante Milicic added some respectability to the score with a late goal.
Milicic sent a long-range speculator toward goal, the ball bouncing off the crossbar and over the line before Petkovic grabbed it and went to play on, only for assistant referee Michael Klavec to award a goal.
Some of the gloss was taken off the Glory’s win with the first half hamstring injury to Scott Miller, but with Perth having the bye next weekend, Miller has an extra week to recover before his team’s next match.
