some of you may recognize me from my brief stint at xtratime but if you don't you'll get to know me very soon i'm sure. probably the only thing we have in common is that we're all exiles of that communist run xtratime because i'll be frank, i don't particularly admire your national team and domestic league. you'll notice that if you observe some of the threads started by myself in the portuguese NT forum. however, one thing i am very sure of is that you wont be as passionate about posting at xtratime when your IP address changes and your free to post their again because over here everything goes. it'll kinda be like not being able to relate to life pre-internet boom if you get my drift.

You pin so much on the Italian record of wins - and I'll grant you it is a long record, and the sunny peninsula always manages to field a talented bunch.

But....even though I believe Portugal's present national team is superior to yours, I WOULD rather we lose - if the alternative is that they play like Italy.

There is no bravery or flair to the Italian national side. They go out there, score one goal, and then close down and defend. It makes for boring soccer - and let's remember that the whole point of this thing is entertainment. Winning is so important to Italy that the spirit is choked out of the game.

O.K., we're not so good at blowing our own horn, and our players may not care as much about grooming, (our guys are MEN afterall), but the way we move the ball around, Figo's interpretation of the game, the level of skill our players demonstrate, hell we don't need that other stuff - we'll leave it to the Italians and the English.

I can only imagine what you guys would be saying if Figo were Italian. His picture would probably be on your money by now.

hey i'll accept your criticism because it is fair afterall. i don't enjoy watching catenaccio either, in fact, that is what is detrimental to our game.

Yes, I think I've made those points about our team myself, not too long ago, regarding lack of depth etc. But since you asked,

Where we lack depth is in the area of players who have experience at the international level. That exposure counts, and it's why I'm never one of those that moans and groans when an up and coming young Portuguese player gets traded abroad. That's good for the national team because it gives us more players who are comfortable playing against the best.

Where we most certainly do NOT lack depth is in the area of skills. When it comes to ball control, passing, and the ability to set a fast pace...well I think even the most strident critic of Portugal will have to admit our team is nice to watch.

Why do I feel our team is superior? Well the short answer is this. They ARE a team. They are a good example of the total adding up to more than the sum of the parts. These guys have been playing together since they were 16 and they've already won a world championship together. Added to that, they are all, (almost embarrassingly so), very patriotic. Figo most of all.

If you know anything about this team, you will recognize the truth of that. So, yes I agree that if one of our central players is injured, it will hurt us more than it would the more evenly talented Italian or French squads, but if we're all there and healthy, and catch an even break - then I predict Portugal will kick some pasta-eating ass. See you on College AND St. Clair - there will be no where to hide.

you're running in circles here. i say you're not superior because you lack depth, not because you play attractive futbol. that is my point which you addressed. let's just say couto becomes injured. who will you replace him with ? for us, we lose nesta we'll sub in materazzi, or iuliano. playmakers ... totti losses a leg ... we bring in baggio or liverani or fiore. strikers ... vieri will most likely fall to injury but no need to worry, we have vincenzino montella. see what i mean ? that's quality depth and that's the point you're missing. we have it ... you don't ! france and argentina have it as well ... you don't and that's your achilees heel in my estimation. that and your D.

you're strikers are good, but only because you're midfield is world class. take figo or rui costa from the mid and you're strikers look very ordinary.

Italy just seem to frustrate the hell out of teams with their defensive tactics... I used to call them the luckiest teams ever due to the way they always looked like they'd sh*t their way into a semi... or a final. But, they do it so often that is simply can't be luck. It may be ugly, but they're just good at what they do -- which is frustrate the hell out of a team into mistakes which they take advantage of with amazing efficiency.

No doubt Italy is one of the teams I'd rather not face in the tournament

You didn't read very closely, probably in your rush to reassure yourself that Italy has nothing to worry about.

I said I agreed Portugal does not have a lot of players with experience at the top level of International, (meaning European), play. That's not the same as not having great players at all.

So who would we put in as a defender if Couto or Costa were hurt? Well, we have any number of guys to choose from, like Rui Jorge, Manuel Dimas, Luis Beto, Carlos Secretario and more. You may not have heard of them, but they all have experience on the national team. If I was going to be worried about any position where we do not have experience, it would be the keeper's. Quim and Ricardo are good, but they are not playing at with the consistency, confidence and quality Victor Baia commanded before his injury. If he is in good form, we would be solid everywhere.

Severus, I've read your posts, and you make sense to me when you write on Series A. But my friend, do yourself and us a favour. Refrain from making comments about the Portuguese side that spring from fear or insecurity. Bombast reflects well on no one and usually serves to hide a deeper insecurity. May the better side, (that would be Portugal), win!

well, i don't follow the portuguese league steadily, however i do get somewhat of a measure of the quality coming out of portugal in those tournaments, you know ... the champions league or UEFA and i'm not impressed. you don't have many players abroad and your teams certainly aren't a force to be reckoned with in europe nor do they have any potential to do so so what do you base your opinion on ???? i've just based mine on a pretty decent foundation, yourself ?

Since it's come down to "My Nationality is better than yours" argument, I'm forced to point out how the Portuguese are simply better than the Italians in almost everything.

1- We were the first to land on the Moon! Just ask Armstrong about the Barbeque grill and Sardine bones they found near the landing site! That's right! Jose Antonio Da Silva Marques Miguel was the first to land on the moon in the early 1940's when he mistakenly netted a German sea mine Near the Azores and though it was a new species of Octupus and so tried to club it to death. 2- We were in the New World long before Columbus and the Vikings. Just ask the New Foundland ancient American Native tribe called "Os Mortoseiros"... clearly decendents of the Portuguese tribe known as "Alentejanos" in the mother land. Not that you need more proof, but if you do there is a skeleton of a Portuguese fisherman in the museum of New Foundland dated to the 1200's. How do we know the skeleton is Portuguese, you ask? Because he was wearing "tamancas de 50 quilos" when he died.

In fact, we invented the wheel and binoculars. It's true.

Besides, we make the best espresso because our cofee comes directly from Angola. Your's come from North Africa which is too dry to produce quality coffee. Our Beer, wine and women our better. Our schedules are more flexible than yours. We're generally at least an hour late as comapred to you guys who can only muster a measily 52 minutes on average. If we made cars they'd be better than yours because we invented the wheel.

And finally, we are the better soccer team. All that remains is for us to prove it in Japan (whom, by the way, were taught all their matial arts by the Portuguese exploreres).

as far as the coffee goes...hey man don't comment til you've tried it in both countries. I've sipped in Firenze, Pisa and ALL over Portugal. Believe me you have not tasted coffee until you have an espresso in Portugal...we'll just call you Nuno from now on, and make sure the Jersey you buy is a Portugal National team, not Fiorentina. Of course if you want a coffee with milk and foam - the way the ladies and pretty boys like it - then I agree Italy is your first choice.

Just what I like to discuss....women, coffee, wine, beer.

I'm with Tiger on the wine bit...them Aussies are coming out with some fantastic whites, and some very nice reds. Their chardonnay is tops. For Red Wine, I love the Chile's. They make a great merlot. as well as some nice cabernet and here in the US it's inexpensive compared to the quality while the Aussie wine tends to be a bit more expensive.

On the women bit...sorry but it's been officially proven through scientific surveys that the most beautiful women come from Iceland. Apparently their per capita ratio on models is something like 1 in every 10,000 or something like that...Either way, I've never been fussy over which country has the most gourgeous sweeties...Every country I think has at least one chick that I'd do...and that's understating it.

On the Coffee bit...I'm going with Pedro. Portugal has the best espresso in the world.

On the Beer...just a couple. SuperBock rules. Although Sagres Dark is nice. German beer is fantastic...also another fav of mine is Red Stripe...from JAMAICA!

i've tasted european beers cos i've travelled to the UK, france, holland (of course), germany, spain, france, italia, turkey and greece and IMO i prefer north american. yeah its generally lighter than european, BUT I LIKE IT THAT WAY. it tastes better to me. have you ever heard of personal preference ??? secondly, the only countries that come close to making a nice CAFE (i don't know about portugal but we in italy call it UN CAFE ... not UN ESPRESSO) is turkey but mostly greece. i've tasted portuguese coffee in the bars on college and SANTA CLARA and they're nothing special.

as for us eating your cuisine ....... ahhh ...... if you look around, it seems to be our restaurants that are on every street corner and a lot more italian items in your stores than there are portuguese in ours, concerning food of course. so ....... what are you basing this on ?

I used to work for the owner of lavazza coffee, the second best coffee here. Dont like much him but the perks are good, who can say no to an occassional cruise in the marinello :)

Even though lavazza is the most regualr coffee in the city cafes, Illie coffee is the best. Have no idea where it originates from, (head office in sydney)just dated (well met her at a club) the heiress to that business once several years ago and I, shall we say, have acquired a taste for it since.

Severus, for lovers of lighter beers try Cascade, although it may be difficult acquiring it in north america. A Tasmanian beer that has taken the mainland by storm down here. One of my favourites.

North Africa/Middle East -> one of the prettiest girls I've ever had the pleasure of meeting was a half Syrian half Indian chick.

North Europe -> They have decent girls, but very few of them actuall make it to be like Cindy Crawford.
