Ronny Johnsen has said he could now face at least three months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to repair his hamstring injury.
The central defender had an operation on Monday in Oslo, and has been convalescing with his family in Tønsberg while his Manchester United team-mates are today celebrating their passage to the second phase of the Champions League.
Johnsen is now in plaster from his ankle right to the top of his leg after undergoing on operation on the back part of his right knee.
"I don't know how long I will be out of football, but normally with this kind of injury you are talking about an absence of around three months," Johnsen told Norwegian newspaper Tønsberg Blad.
The 32-year Norway international - whose United career has been plagued by a spate of lengthy lay-offs - will be desperate to recover in time to earn himself a new contract.
The defender's current deal expires next summer and United will not be keen on risking agreeing a new contract with the former Besiktas player until they are convinced he is fully fit again.
