The mountains look on Marathon --
And Marathon looks on the sea;
And musing there an hour alone,
I dream'd that Greece might yet be free
For, standing on the Persians' grave,
I could not deem myself a slave.
...
Must we but weep o'er days more blest?
Must we but blush? – Our fathers bled.
Earth! render back from out thy breast
A remnant of our Spartan dead!
Of the three hundred grant but three,
To make a new Thermopylae.

Lord Byron, The Isles of Greece

"Fight for Faith and Motherland! The time has come, O Hellenes. Long ago the people of Europe, fighting for their own rights and liberties, invited us to imitation ... The enlightened peoples of Europe are occupied in restoring the same well-being, and, full of gratitude for the benefactions of our forefathers towards them, desire the liberation of Greece. We, seemingly worthy of ancestral virtue and of the present century, are hopeful that we will achieve their defence and help. Many of these freedom-lovers want to come and fight alongside us ... Who then hinders your manly arms? Our cowardly enemy is sick and weak. Our generals are experienced, and all our fellow countrymen are full of enthusiasm. Unite, then, O brave and magnanimous Greeks! Let national phalanxes be formed, let patriotic legions appear and you will see those old giants of despotism fall by themselves, before our triumphant banners."
Ypsilantis' Proclamation at Iaşi

ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΠΟΛΛΑ!

Happy Indedence day to all the Hellens and happy nameday to the ones celebrating it today!

I attended the military parade of Athens today. This raised the morale a bit as especially with such a government our morale as Greeks have became very low.

Poutis, I'd translate it for you, but sadly, Asmir can't speak Bosnian, so we'll never know what he's said.

Happy Independance Day btw.

Can someone answer a q for me please?
What happened to Greece between 1821-32. The Kingdom of Greece obviously starts in '32. Is independence day recognized as in 1821 because that's when the rebellion started or what? (although i can't think of any sort of independence 'til 1832)

that's is correct sir we count when we started the rebellion. The war lasted from 1821-1832! We where beating the Ottoman's ass until we started fighting amongst ourselves and the Sultan ask his Egyptian vassal for help who in turn had extensive experience in dealing with the type of warfare we where waging against the Ottoman Turks. We where on the brink of losing when Uk, Russia and France interviened on our behalf at the Battle of Navarino on 20 October 1827. I think afterwards treaty talks lasted until 1831 when the forced monarchy of Othon was imposed on the Greek people.

March 25 1821 is considered the date the uprising started, that's why in Greek we refer to the holiday as "Revolution Anniversary" mostly. In English it is translated "Indepedence day" to sound more familiar to English speakers I guess.

Thanks for that, makes sense now.
By the way, the rebellion wouldn't have had any chance of succeeding without foreign intervention- a prerequisite for future 19th century nationalist movements. (not trying to be an ass here)

true!!!... but it worked both ways my friend. The Sultan begged for help from his vassal cause we where winning. We got financial help too from various European powers through the war. But during the initial fighting we had the Ottoman's number.

"begged for help" --You make it sound as if we recieved aid through animosity. Technically, we still ruled Egpyt and it was our right to extract resources (in the form of soldiers, just as tax payments to Istanbul continued) from Egpyt. Although, in the end, it was worse for us considering Muhammad Ali's claim to Syria and Ibrahim's offensive into Anatolia.

"during the initial fighting we had the Ottoman's number"
It started 1821 and the battle of navarino which, in my mind atleast, was the turning point, was in 1827.
