REPORT Feyenoord 0 Sparta Prague 2

Wednesday 17th October 2001

Sparta Prague reached the second phase of the Champions' League on Wednesday with a comfortable away win over Feyenoord, who had two players sent off. Jiri Novotny and Jiri Jarosik were both on target for the visitors.

Midfielder Jarosik scored just before half time to put Sparta into the league while defender Novotny made the game safe with thirteen minutes to go.

The hosts were in fact first to threaten through Paul Bosvelt, but goalkeeper Petr Cech managed to block his powerful long range strike.

Cech's opposing number, Henk Timmer, was not forced into action for the first time until 20 minutes. He made a magnificent reflex save from Jarosik.

Pierre van Hooijdonk then went close with a freekick that dipped just over the bar before Jarosik made no mistake at the other end.
His long-range effort took a slight deflection to curl into the top corner.

Sparta could have doubled the lead after the break but Timmer tipped Marek Kincl's dangerous shot over and then denied Libor Sionko with a one-handed save.

Good work by Brett Emerton handed Van Hooijdonk an excellent chance on the hour, but the striker slipped and saw his effort rebound of the bar. Minutes later, the former Benfica and Nottingham Forest frontman was sent off.

He was joined on the sidelines by De Haan with 15 minutes to go, after he picked up a second booking.

The visitors benefited from the extra space in the 78th minute, when the unmarked Novotny headed home a Vladamir Labant free-kick.

Feyenoord: Timmer, Collen (Dos Santos 62), Van Wonderen, De Haan, Rzasa, Emerton, Bosvelt, Paauwe, Leonardo (Kalou 46), Ono, Van Hooijdonk

Sparta: Cech, Grygera, Hubschman, Novotny, Labant, Sionko, Hasek, Jarosik, Michalik (Zelenka 89), Kincl, Hartig

Sent off: Van Hooijdonk, De Haan

Booked: Van Wonderen, Dos Santos (Feyenoord), Sionko (Sparta)

Well I'm extremely mad at the referee
  , the first red card ok, but the second one:confused: ? He just proved he had no feeling with the game,
the Champions League adventure is over :( , now let's at least get the third place, and play some UEFA Cup football.
