this is the article from sky sports.
handsome, wealthy and fabulously successful he may be, but David Beckham has a long way to go before he is as popular as Bobby Moore.
That’s the revelation in a survey undertaken in aid of cancer research by Budweiser. In the poll, 26% of those polled voted England’s only World Cup-winning skipper the country’s best-ever World Cup player.
Beckham is languishing in fifth place with six percent. Gary Lineker, who won the Golden Boot at his first World Cup in Mexico in 1986 and scored a further four goals in Italy four years later, is second with 24 percent and Moore’s 1966 team-mate Bobby Charlton was voted third with 17 percent.
Still ahead of the Old Trafford wonder-boy is fading star Paul Gascoigne, whose outstanding displays in Italy clearly still hold much sway with the footballing public. The fact that he missed the two subsequent tournaments and any chance to soil those Italia 90 memories probably helps.
Even Beckham’s lowest point, getting sent off against Argentina in St Etienne, doesn’t rate very high as agonising moments go. Its ranked fourth behind the Italia ’90 penalty shoot-out with West Germany, Maradona’s Hand of God goal in the Azteca Stadium in ’86 and the Argentina shoot-out in France.
There’s very little doubt about the greatest World Cup player ever. He wore number nine and played for Brazil and was voted all-time best by a whopping 65 percent of those polled. The highest-ranked English player is Bobby Charlton with a measly three percent.
The brilliant Brazilian side that Pele inspired to victory in 1970 is voted the best team ever, taking 55 percent of the poll, with England’s 1966 winners second with a creditable 15 percent. In an age when retro shirts are all the rage, the 1970 Brazilian model is voted the World Cup’s coolest top.
Football television producers everywhere will be pleased to discover that their infatuation with female Brazilian fans has not gone unrewarded. The samba senoritas are voted the sexiest supporters in the world with 37 percent of the vote. Sweden’s fans are next with 22 percent and England’s third with 14.
Germany’s fans were voted most attractive by one percent of the poll.
Away from the South American masters for a moment, and the most beautiful World Cup moment according to 27 percent of those polled, is Kenneth Wolstenholme’s unforgettable: “They think its all over………it is now!” As Geoff Hurst bagged the fourth at Wembley.
Finally, for lovers of Colemanballs, the following exchange is voted the most ridiculous World Cup quote ever.
Jimmy Hill (to Terry Venables): “Don’t sit on the fence, Terry, what chance do you think Germany has of getting through?
Venables: “I think its fifty-fifty.”
