Match Report from Kingz vs South 0-0:
The Football Kingz have escaped with a lucky scoreless draw in their clash with South Melbourne in Auckland, the home side’s keeper fortunate to escape dismissal and a penalty early in the match.
Kingz coach Mike Petersen and his South Melbourne counterpart Eddie Krncevic both agreed goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos should have got his marching orders and conceded a penalty for the 15th minute felling of South striker Peter Buljan.
But amazingly, referee Derek Rugg removed a yellow rather than red card following the incident, and the Kingz easily cleared the free kick immediately after the incident.
"I thought the Kingz keeper should have been sent off," Krncevic said. "I don't know whether there are different rules over here, but being a (soccer world governing body) FIFA referee he should have sent him off."
"I never quite understand that rule, because last week we had Paul Urlovic brought down by the last defender and he only got a yellow card," Petersen said. "I believe the letter of the law is that it should be a red card, but referees interpret it the way they want to, so we were lucky."
The last time South made the trek across the Tasman, ironically with Petersen in charge of the Melbourne team, the Kings were thrashed 6-1, but on this occasion Petersen believes his team should perhaps have claimed all three points.
"Tonight I think we could have, maybe should have won the game," he said. "I think we were a bit more aggressive and a bit more decisive tonight."
Twenty-three minutes into the match Andy Vlahos provided a superb cross for John Markovski, but the burly striker fired his free header wide of the mark, and Markovski was astray again 12 minutes later when Mark Atkinson sent in another cross.
South almost grabbed the lead two minutes after half-time, New Zealand striker Vaughn Coveny hitting a powerful free kick to draw a sensational save from Theoklitos.
But the best chance of the match fell to Kingz player Paul Urlovic in the 56th minute.
Vlahos fired a free kick into the area and Markovski met it to force a soft block from South keeper Chris Jones, before Urlovic stabbed his shot past the post.

Match Report from Northern Spirit vs Newcastle United 1-1:
Northern Spirit’s woeful recent run at home has continued with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle at North Sydney Oval, United grabbing the equaliser in the last minutes of the game.
With just one draw from their last eight home games last season, Spirit looked set to break the duck that stretches back to round 11 last year courtesy of John Hutchinson’s 49th minute header.
But Scott Baillie had other ideas, getting Newcastle back on level terms in the 85th minute, and rescuing a point for his team.
Robbie Trajkovski put in the cross to Hutchinson for Spirit’s goal, and the home side should have put the match on ice two minutes later, but Adrian Cervinski sent his shot from five metres over the bar.
Unable to finish Newcastle off, Baillie headed home Andrew Roberts’ corner just over 30 minutes later to draw the match.
In the first half Esala Masi twice had chances to give United the lead, just missing with a header in the ninth minute and drawing a strong save from Milan Blagojevic with another two minutes later.
Further chances were missed by Chris Zoricich and Robbie Middleby, before Spirit’s Robbie Enes and Andy McDermott both had opportunities of their own in the dying moments of the half.
"I'm delighted to walk away with a point to be honest with you," United coach Ian Crook said. "I get satisfaction from that, not because it was Northern Spirit,” he said of the match against his former team.

Vince Matassa will rejoin Perth Glory at the end of the month from English team Woking, the goalkeeper signing a two year deal to return to the Western Australian club.
Glory coach Mitch d’Avray said that while Matassa had won player of the year honours at Woking last year, his arrival would ease the workload on current custodian Tony Franken, who is also the Socceroos goalkeeper coach.
"With that in mind we decided we needed another goalkeeper," d'Avray said.
As well as Franken, Matassa will also join Jason Petkovic at the Glory, but d’Avray says the club hasn’t yet ranked the three.
"There are no numbers at this stage. The way I wee it, we're going to have three experienced goalkeepers pushing each other for places,” he said. "We have competition at other areas of the field so why not the goalkeepers as well."
After playing 11 games for Perth in 1996-97, Matassa left to travel the world, but after his stint in England, had contacted the Glory to advise of his desire to return to Western Australia.
dunno who the hell he is, but sounds good for your team anyway.

Yeah he's quite good. I don't think he will start very often because Jason Petkovic is a class act and deserves to be overseas but I hope he stays here...

Parramatta has handed reigning premiers the Wollongong Wolves a comprehensive 3-1 thrashing at Parramatta Stadium, the Power notching their first points of the season after losing last week.
After a scoreless first half, Young Socceroo Ahmad Elrich made a break in the 50th minute and crossed to Steve Fitzsimmons, who found the back of the net to put the Power ahead.
Just seven minutes later, with Parramatta getting right on top, Wollongong midfielder David Huxley was shown the yellow card for a second time and with it his marching orders.
The Power took full advantage of the extra man, Elrich and Wayne O’Sullivan running amok in midfield before Nick Orlic sent a long ball in for Johnny Buonavoglia to make it 2-0 in the 74th minute, before Buonavoglia made it a double four minutes later.
Stuart Young made the most of a dubious call from the referee in the dying moments of the match, slotting home the penalty to at least make the score a little more respectable.
Earlier in the game it was a case of midfield battles, with the best chance of the first half falling to Power defender and former Socceroo skipper Alex Tobin, his 12th minute header hitting the crossbar.
The Wolves had their chances too before the interval, Darren McDonald failing to get it past the legs of Power keeper Les Pogliacomi from three metres out in the 37th minute, before Young drew a string save from Pogliacomi seconds before the half-time whistle.
"It doesn't matter who you are if you don't have Chipperfield or Petrovski...you don't replace these players overnight," Wolves coach Ron Corry said of the off season loss of strikers Scott Chipperfield and Saso Petrovski.
With the Wolves having gone their last 17 games last season without a loss, it was Wollongong’s first defeat in their last 19 matches, but if anything Corry was relieved the run is over.
"It was always going to happen and it's probably better that it's happened for us now," he said.
Power coach Dave Mitchell was delighted with his side's improvement from last week and said he will continue to play three strikers in a bid to win more games at home.

The Melbourne Knights and Adelaide City have played out a 1-1 draw at Knights Stadium in Melbourne, the visitors overcoming an early second half deficit to steal a point.
After a defensive first half, the only real chance of which fell to Adelaide striker Alex Moreira who hit the apex of the post and the crossbar, the game came to life just after the interval.
Joe Tricarico put the home side ahead on 48 minutes, the diminutive striker making the most of a second shot at goal after his first attempt was blocked by City keeper Adrian Cagalj.
It was the perfect return to the NSL for Tricarico, who has missed the best part of two seasons with chronic hamstring injuries, and the Knights could have doubled their lead minutes later, but Joel Porter’s unmarked header went wide.
In the 58th and 65th minutes Knights keeper Martin John preserved his team’s lead with brilliant saves from Adelaide veteran Aurelio Vidmar shots on goal, but in the 68th minute it was a case of third time lucky for Vidmar.
Matthew Kemp put a low cross in from the left, leaving John stranded, and Vidmar was on hand, screaming into the area, to slam through the equaliser.
Despite dominating play from then on, Zoran Matic’s men were unable to slot home a winner in the last 20 minutes of the match.
"We don't have to prove anything to anybody, we have to prove it to ourselves," Matic said. "It's a tough year in the league, the teams are very even."
"The way we are playing is not the best - the first two games have been quite ordinary," Knights player coach Andrew Marth said, attributing the performance to a lack of confidence from his mid-fielders.
