Besides, if someone gave me the choice between:

a) MAYBE go to the football world cup
b) become European champions in volleyball, waterpolo and basketball

I completely agree with this. Football is a way of life, any other sport is just for guys (girls?) who are not good enough to play football. Nothing compares to getting into let say, quarter-finals in the football world cup.

I actually don't agree...we got into the 1/8 th finals in 98, and still I found that the WC in 98 was the worst WC of all time.

When we go to WC we (unreasonably?) expect to win the whole damn thing! When Slovenians go, they'll just be happy if they can beat Bahrain in the first round :D :silly: :evil: :thumbsup:

When we go to Eurobasket, anything short of a 1st place is a dissapointment. (Which Serb would have been happy if we had lost to Turkey?) On the other hand, Slovenians would have been satisfied had they beaten some basketball minnows like Estonia or Croatia

You always have great players, but you don't have the right team spirit - that was always your problem. Your team has always been refered to as "European Brazilians", but the difference between real Brazilians and you is notable - 4 World Cup titles, plus several Copa America titles.

And speaking of WC1998, it was the fate of missing the penalty against Holland that put you out of quarter-finals. Would Mijatovic score on that occasion, I doubt you would speak of WC98 as the worst in your history. Anyway, in 1998 I was still cheering for you, since your team seemed to me on the right track, specially after dealing with the qualifying group and then with Hungary so easily. In my opinion, your actual team and the team that played in Euro2000 (which is basically the same) sucks much more that the one that played WC98.

How do you cope with the fact that the team, which is happy when it beats Bahrain, is in front of your superteam, which always wants no less then Euro or World title??

Well, we don't need to. We will always be better than you in skiing, even if everybody quits to ski today. And even if this is not true, I don't care. We are in front of you in football world cup qualifiers and that is the only thing that counts for me, no matter how seriously you want us to believe how basketball, volleyball and waterpolo are suddenly so important.

But still, we beat you in ice-hockey, rugby and baseball, possibly also in handball. Less important sports than basketball, volleyball and waterpolo? Ask the English or the Americans.

FYI, in ice-hockey, we qualified for division A this year, so we will be playing against the best teams in the world.

By asking the Americans, I meant baseball. They are probably the only nation in the world, that can't realize what others have realized about football (soccer)/basketball relationship.

I am not ashamed of skiing, it was you that brought the subject up... But defining Slovenians as skiers, well... Just do it before an important football match and you'll see. Boskov said few weeks ago that we are known as skiers and see what happened. When asked who is the most dangerous Slovenian player Alen Boksic said "Bojan Krizaj" (which was our famous skier, FYI) just before the Croatia - Slovenija match in qualifiers for WC98 (where Croatia finished 3rd) - and the game ended 3:3 in Poljud stadium.
In the return game in Ljubljana, nobody dared to call us skiers - and then they have beaten us. ;)
So defining us as skiers, you just do us a favor - it boosts our motivation ski high.

Oanimal - why do you get so upset when you see us Serbs talking? You seem like a cool minded person, I don't understand why is it neccessary for you to always be around here trying to compare sports and what's more valuable to whom.

To talk about which sport medals you would trade for what sport is really dumb. All these athletes compete in their respective sports because they love the sport and they are good at it. It's ridiculous to say that someone plays basketball because they weren't good enough to make the football team. We as a nation are very proud of out athletes no matter what sport. During the 10 years of war, sanctions and Serbophobia around the world, our athletes were the only people who could provide some positive light on our country and people.

The fact is, we in Serbia really don't care much about Slovenia - we don't hate you, we don't love you - we have as much in common with you as we do with Austria. The only reason we were at each others throats the past year is because our football teams played 3 very important maches. I'd love if we could be friends and talk about football and different subject, without always resorting to insults.

Ivan: I am not upset, when I see you Serbs talking. I am upset when I see posts which say like: Slovenians, stick to skiing.
You know, when we got the independence, everybody was saying that in football, we will be just like Cyprus or Luxemburg - that we will be competing just to be smashed by any average football team. And these were not just foreign people, even the majority of our people thought it that way. Most of our people were saying that we are just born for skiing, and not for football and thus, we can't qualify for a major football competition. And in the first years, it was just like that. In the qualifiers for WC98, we collected a single point!?!? Then we qualified for Euro2000 and now we still have chances to make it to WC2002. That's what makes me proud to be Slovenian even more and no one can take that from me. You could compare us to you or Croatia, but your footballers were (and still are) world known names and everyone could see, that you are able to construct great team, but with us, that was not obvious. How can you explain, that our best player Zahoviè, plays for Benfica and we were still able to get to Euro2000 and maybe in WC2002??? Not Juve, Milan, Inter, Real, Barca, Man Utd or Bayern, just some small, portoguese Benfica???
You can't blame luck for that. We are unbeaten in these qualifiers, and you can't have luck for 9 consecutive games.
I wonder when a nation with 2.000.000 inhabitants qualified for European or World championship?!?! That is what makes me proud.

We don't hate you either, but when somebody address us as skier, the real football fans take this as an insult - and its the serious one. My happiness about our qualification to Euro2000 and possible qualification to WC2002 is even greater, because of all Slovenian people that were always saying that we are not a football nation. They were wrong - WE ARE A FOOTBALL NATION!!

However, it's true that Yugoslavia has great success in team sports, while it sucks in individual sports. Russia is good in both, however, at the moment in teams sports it is not as good as Yugoslavia. Now, dear friends Serbs, you can say, that teams sports count more than the individual ones, but then I can assure that football counts much much more than any other sport - no basketball can compare to it - that's the truth, it is just a question if you are fair enough to admit it. ;)
