Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has reportedly put his head squarely on the chopping block after a calamitous meeting with owner Thaksin Shinawatra.

The two met on Sunday to discuss the current situation at Eastlands following rumours of a less-than-perfect relationship between manager and owner.

And it is believed Eriksson left the meeting knowing that his job was well and truly in jeopardy, according to The Sun.

The Swede gathered all his staff for a conference at City’s Carrington Park training ground to announce the new twist in developments, and declared that he will not be in charge for much longer.

“It was a very unpleasant meeting between Sven and the owner,” said an inside source at the club. “Shinawatra wants control of everything and that is not the way that Eriksson works.”

Angry

Relations flared between Eriksson and Shinawatra after the latter publicly criticised City’s performances in the press and questioned the manager’s role in proceedings.

As a result the former England boss unleashed a furious tirade at the former Prime Minister of Thailand, berating him for airing his criticisms in public rather than discussing them privately.

Furthermore, it appears the owner has sought to exert control over the team, even attempting to influence the selection process – a situation Eriksson will not put up with, especially given the clause in his contract that states he has the final say in team matters.

“Sven was very angry about being attacked in public and let his feelings be known,” continued the source. “Sven doesn’t lose his cool very often and was really upset.

“Shinawatra expects the manager to do what he says no questions asked and if he decides a player should be in the team the boss should accept it.

“But Sven won’t agree with that. How many top managers would?”

Ridiculous

Shinawatra reportedly plans to replace Eriksson with another big-name coach from abroad in the summer, but City fans are unlikely to appreciate the owner’s interference given the Sky Blues have had their best season for some time under the Swede’s management.

And nor are the players pleased with the Thai’s meddling, having pledged their support – perhaps in vain – to their beleaguered boss.

“Everyone was totally shocked,” said one eyewitness. “The players have all taken to Sven and enjoy his methods.

“It seems ridiculous after what has been an excellent season.”

Good point, but lets be honest, they did better than usual. I just hope McLeish doesn't go there now, cos if Birmingham lose to Fulham they are down :(

Well I think Sven has to blame himself for taking this job at the very start. I mean everything has been a big bluff from Shinawatra's side. He has promised Sven alot of money to spend on new players this summer and many other things that hasen't turned out the way it was planned.

Shinawatra is a clown!

Insane this. Just goes to show these rich businessmen taking over is not always a good thing. This guy knows nothing about football. Sven has transformed City. Ok they haven't had the greatest second half of the season but are definately going in the right direction. You need time to change things round. City are normally fighting relegation so by their standards they're doing well. At the start of the season we were told Sven had been given a top 10 finish as a target and he's within that. They'd be stupid to let him go!

Tha fans don't want him to go and City might find a few players will want to leave if Sven goes. Thaksin is a clown.

I was starting to like man city because of him.

I was ready to make them my English team, i have always had tons of respect for this man. If he leaves, I probably wont have any interest in watching Man City.

Oh dealing with a ton of **** but I'm hoping to be able to post more now. I've more or less missed the opportunity to argue with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Roma and Barca fans... dammit ;)

Well it will be interesting to see what happens. Sven is very highly respected and turned a team going nowhere into a stablised team who have the platform to improve. The City fans don't want to see him go and if he does they can't guarantee a successor will do better? What does Thaksin want? The title? That's highly unlikely and in one season when they were fighting relegation before Sven arrived? That's just insane! If the rumours are true it will just go to prove Thaksin knows nothing about football. A danger for any team!

I was never a big fan of the style of play his teams play. I have to admit he did ok with Man City, but I dont think losing him is a disaster...there a lot of good managers out there

Well it will be a disaster if the teams he's brought together is broken up. Will be a disaster if Thaskin's high lvl targets aren't interested in moving to City and he has to bring a 4th or 5th choice target in. Sven is moving City in the right direction and could well be getting that 5th Prem spot next season. Thaksin can't hope for much more than that. As Keegan pointed out the other day it would take at least £150m, a top manager and convincing top players to move to a club in order to challenge the top four.

City aren't going to win the premiership anytime soon and need to get some perspective here. Where they are this season is a big step forward for them. If it's not broken don't try to fix it!
