Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has reportedly put his head squarely on the chopping block after a calamitous meeting with owner Thaksin Shinawatra.
The two met on Sunday to discuss the current situation at Eastlands following rumours of a less-than-perfect relationship between manager and owner.
And it is believed Eriksson left the meeting knowing that his job was well and truly in jeopardy, according to The Sun.
The Swede gathered all his staff for a conference at City’s Carrington Park training ground to announce the new twist in developments, and declared that he will not be in charge for much longer.
“It was a very unpleasant meeting between Sven and the owner,” said an inside source at the club. “Shinawatra wants control of everything and that is not the way that Eriksson works.”
Angry
Relations flared between Eriksson and Shinawatra after the latter publicly criticised City’s performances in the press and questioned the manager’s role in proceedings.
As a result the former England boss unleashed a furious tirade at the former Prime Minister of Thailand, berating him for airing his criticisms in public rather than discussing them privately.
Furthermore, it appears the owner has sought to exert control over the team, even attempting to influence the selection process – a situation Eriksson will not put up with, especially given the clause in his contract that states he has the final say in team matters.
“Sven was very angry about being attacked in public and let his feelings be known,” continued the source. “Sven doesn’t lose his cool very often and was really upset.
“Shinawatra expects the manager to do what he says no questions asked and if he decides a player should be in the team the boss should accept it.
“But Sven won’t agree with that. How many top managers would?”
Ridiculous
Shinawatra reportedly plans to replace Eriksson with another big-name coach from abroad in the summer, but City fans are unlikely to appreciate the owner’s interference given the Sky Blues have had their best season for some time under the Swede’s management.
And nor are the players pleased with the Thai’s meddling, having pledged their support – perhaps in vain – to their beleaguered boss.
“Everyone was totally shocked,” said one eyewitness. “The players have all taken to Sven and enjoy his methods.
“It seems ridiculous after what has been an excellent season.”
