Because you are not.
In the two games we played in these qualifiers we have been by far the better team, in Slovenia you just got away with it in the dying minutes, in Belgrade I really don't understand how you left undefeated after the way we attacked your goal..You see, that is called LUCK, not being better than us.

Second of all, in these qualifiers our team went through a lot of tough times - problems with Djoric, problems with Djoric fighting against all of our players, Ilija Petkovic leaving the NT even though he was doing a good job, injuries (even against Slovenia in the second game we had a lot of injuries), then of course we have been having problems that every country faces when a transition of generations has to take place because it is not easy and simple and unfortunately our coaches haven't been handling that situation very well..
Then of course, come our games in the qualifiers where we have several times conceeded goals in the dying minutes not because of the opponents superiority but because of keeper mistakes and we have missed so many chances against Switzerland and Russia in Belgrade (1:1 and 0:1) that it is really hard to believe..Even in Moscow Miha hit the crossbar from the freekick, and if that shot was only 2 cm lower, now we would be laughing ,not you...Football really can be a weird game sometimes..

And despite all of this, still we are only 1 point behind you, and haven't been defeated by you, so please, you are not better than us.
I won't go that far saying Slovenia are a skiing country, but no matter how excited you are because of your relative success, you are still far from being a football country..

09-15-2001, 01:00 PM
We'll see in Tokio, who is football country and who is not. If you feel unlucky, what will you say about us, conceeding two stupid goals in last 2 minutes in Faroe Islands? We have been better than Russia by far in Moscow and only got away with a point? The same goes for Switzerland game in Ljubljana? In Belgrade, you may had more possesion, but we had better chances (remember Osterc slipping in front of Kralj and Cimerotic hitting the outside of the net? We were a bit lucky against you in Ljubljana and maybe against Russia, but so were you in Switzerland. If we are in 2nd position in the group, it is because we have done something good, not just because we are lucky.

We were not lucky against Switzerland, if we were, we would have won 5 - 1

Serb
09-16-2001, 09:34 PM
remember Osterc slipping in front of Kralj

I think this proves that the Slovenian players are not as technically gifted as some of their fans would like us to believe. However, Slovenia does have a lot of heart.

Slovenia has not made the WC yet, they still have to see if Russia will screw up or not. If Russia does win, the Slovenians will be going against the Romanians which is not a easy task.

One thing for the Slovenians: Have you ever won a championship in any team sport? I rather be the Euro Champs in Basketball, Volleyball, and Waterpolo than just go to the WC and get disapointed, which would have happened to Yugoslavia and which will happen to Slovenia if they make it. At least our country has something to celebrate on the streets and say that they are the best in something unlike Slovenia. All you can say is that you have participated in Euro 2000 and maybe WC 2002. Big Deal. Oh yeah, didn't Slovenia have a team in Eurobasket 2001? Another thing you can brag about, you participated in Eurobasket 2001.

Ivan
09-17-2001, 01:09 AM
Oh come on Serb, give them a break! You can't expect a country whose history streches as far back as 1991 to start winning gold medals all of a sudden.

Besides, you don't know if the Austian teams in the 1930s had some good Slovenian players ;) :silly:

Walter BC
09-17-2001, 07:36 AM
Serb, there is a lot of truth in your words, but still.
I don't have any problems in congratulating to you and saying you are the best in basketball, volleyball and waterpolo, great job
You are right, we did have a team in Eurobasket, but they sucked, played like shit, and we (public, fans) defenetly were dissapointed. :boo:
We also had a team in Euro champs in volleyball, but this is a different story. It was the first time we qualified for such competition, and yes we did lose all our games, but I wasn't all that dissapointed at all. We were by far the worst team, and it was a major surprise thet we even qualified.
So you are quite right when you say we didn't win anything yet, but that doesn't mean we never will. Sport is developing nicely in Slovenija since we got independent in 1991, and we allready had some succes so far. You maybe dont't know, but we had (have) olimpic champions, world champions, and so on. OK not in those very popular and high rated sporst, but still, we have them.
And as far as I know we might one day get something big in the major sports as well.
But once again I must say that at the moment we are at least as good as you are in football. I don't really care what kind of problems you have internaly, because thet doesn't really count. No matter what they are it is only you that are to deal with them. We had our share of great preblems in the past as well, but noone payed much attention about it. It seems like we dealt with our problems, and it's our time to enjoy the results of all the hard work that has been done in the past. You will have do do the same if you want to regain the old glory, but that's on you guys.
I never said we are going to WC 2002, but we still have good chances to make it.
So as far as I see it it's pointless to argue about all those things, because there always are two truths to it.

Stqay cool;)

Good post Walter BC :)

Everyone needs to understand this, from the results it shows that Yugoslavia is not better than Slovenia and Slovenia is not better than Yugoslavia, until one of us beat the other than they (depending on who won) are better

Serb
09-17-2001, 11:12 PM
What Slovenia lacks in technically gifted players, they sure make it up in teamwork and work ethic. Yugoslavia has loads of technical players but they don't have the teamwork or the work ethic. It balances out. If Yugoslavia had the teamwork Slovenia had, they would go very far or vice versa.

Red star, your last post was not very intelligent, sorry.
I don't care who I talk to, I always say what I think, and if I think bad about you, I will say it.

I will get to the point. I may even agree with Serb, that we may exaggerate about our qualification on Euro2000 and (possibly) being in front of Yugoslavia in WC2002 qualifiers. But you have to take into account few things:
- we are independent from 1991, and before football in our country was really seen as balcanic and even improper sport for us.
- we are about 2 millions - just about the size of your capital. Name one country of that size that made it to European football championship
- further, our domestic league sucks. Almost no team (except Maribor few years ago) is able to get past 1st round of UEFA Cup or Champions League qualifiers.
- the stadiums (of teams that play in 1st division) have the average capacity of less than 5000, and they are still almost never full.
- most of our players do not play in important european leagues. They play in Austria, Belgium, Portugal, English 2nd division,...
If they even play, some of them are even reserves...
- Just few years ago, we were able to lose against Bosnia at home, against Lithuania. In qualifications for WC1998, in the group with Denmark, Croatia, Greece and Bosnia, we collected one single point - against Croatia in Split.

But despite all these facts (these are facts, not my opinions), we were able to qualify for Euro2000, and we still have all chances to qualify for WC2002. I think that this is what makes us great and what makes us fans excited and proud of our team. I can't see any country, that can compare to us, considering all the facts above.

I don't say you are bad, but so far, we have been better by one point. However, this may still change if we don't beat the Faroes.

And if we get to the WC2002 and lose all three games (but we won't) we would still be proud and happy, because the qualification for football WC2002, means more to us, than all your basketball titles to you and I still don't won't to insult you.

red star forever
09-18-2001, 07:57 PM
Who is insulting??
It is a fact, do you know any country that is more successful than us this year in team sports overall?
And please, as I already said, I would always rather be the best in Europe and second in the world in basketball rather than just qualify for the WC (sorry, but it is true).

p.s. you haven't really better than us by one point, we have been worse by one point, our not qualifying was due to our problems, not due to your brilliance.

Mihajloviç

O Animal, you got a point with the soccer achievements of Slovenia. Considering how small your country is and how many people play soccer, it is an acomplisment to be proud to make it to a major tournament. Keep in mind though some of your better players went through the youth schools of Serbian and Croatian clubs.

However, you must agree that your country is must better off than ours in terms of economy and standard of living. Plus, our country was in chaos for ten years. It is not easy to compete, never mind, win anything when all the wars and politics are happening.

I cannot believe that just making a soccer tournament would mean more than winning a Eurobasket in Slovenia. I do not believe that the majority of Slovenians follow that view. It does not make any sense. I know soccer is more popular but still, winning a basketball title in Europe is a very big, and a much better acomplishment than just qualifying for a soccer tournament.

Walter BC

Yes I agree with all of you dudes. You have a strong point where you talk about your problems in past years, but if you have talent (and you have lots of it) all this can be surpassed.
I was never at any point disregarding your acheevments in any of the sports, not even in those that you don't shine at. It is so that there is a sport you are good at but also a sport where you might not be as good. It's just the way it is. At that's the way it is anywhere in the world.
Now I think that OAnimal put it out very nicely, when he talked about our problems. And it seems to me that you guys don't appriciate all the hard work that has been done to get us where we are now. I mean I sure konw how hard it must have been for you, so I'd like at least to hear the same think from you dudes.
As I allready said I don't have any problems in recognizing your supriority in team sports, or in any sport for that matter. But I'd be delighted to see if you had similar respetc for us.
It's no need to argue, while we can treat eachother with respect. That's the way it should be, I mean there is enough of other bullshit going on in this world allready.

And I believe considering only team sports with some kind of ball (men only :)), you are No. 1 in the world without doubt. Only Russia might be compared to you, since your ice hockey team really sucks ;).

RSF, I am not sure if in Slovenia that many people would come to wait for basketball team arrival, if they would win european gold, as last year, when football team qualified for Euro2000 - if we qualify for WC2002, I am sure the airport will be to small to contain all that would like to congratulate the team when they come back from Bucharest. But still, you are free to have your own criteria.

Mihajlovic, thanks for congratulating us. I think that's the right spirit, many Slovenians congratulated you on winning basketball and volleyball european title, I am sure we would congratulate you if you would qualify for WC2002 as well.
