BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Croatia and Albania have received NATO invitations on Wednesday night at the summit of the Alliance in Bucharest.
The Heads of State and Government of the 26 NATO countries held an extraordinary session in the presence of their counterparts from Albania and Croatia to welcome these two new members.
“The countries that join us can be rightly proud of what they have achieved in meeting NATO's demanding criteria for membership. The many years of hard work within the Membership Action Plan have paid off. Due to your hard work, Allies can be confident that your admission to the Alliance will strengthen NATO,” said the NATO Secretary General at the meeting.
This will be the sixth round of enlargement in the Alliance's history. Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia joined in 2004; the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland in 1999; Spain in 1982; Germany in 1955 and Greece and Turkey joined the Alliance in 1952.
Allies also reaffirmed their commitment to keeping NATO’s door open to any European democracy willing and able to assume the responsibilities and obligations of membership, in accordance with Article 10 of the Washington Treaty.
NATO Allies agreed that an invitation to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1 will be extended as soon as a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue has been reached. They encouraged the negotiations to be resumed without delay and expect them to be concluded as soon as possible.

hmm  ...... I dont know what you mean really, but surely NATO does not invite weak armed forces into their Alliance right!
Albania's armed forces are well developed now. Since 1999, Albania has spent approximately $108 million annually on military expenditures, roughly 1.35% of its GDP One of the most important conditions to fulfill due to NATO integration, was the increasing of the military budget. According to Government of Albania plans, military expenditure will reach 2% of GDP in 2008 (already approved by the parliament on the budget of 2008 - for the defense 2.01% of GDP)..
Also to not forget mentioning The Albanian participation in Peacekeeping Operations/Missions in both Iraq and Afghanistan for couple of years now, as well as that in Bosnia and Herzegovina under the German comand (EU-mission ALTHEA)
(Albanias invitation from NATO)
- The truth is that Albania and Croatia has both recieved an Invitation from the last NATO Summit held in Romanian Capital , Bucharest on 2-4 APRIL 2008!
This does of course not mean the new invited countries , immidiately became fully NATO members from that day they recieved the invitation ,because this doesnt work like that, This is a process that needs time to get to the final point, but now when they have the invitation surely their going to be, it is thought that the countries will became fully NATO members first only in the begining of year 2009 , however the most important thing now is that the countries are recognized as new NATO members , since also they have recieved the Invitation in the Alliance's last Summit.'

Actually I don't know!!!! It so crazy with people fighting over who is what! I think a compromise should happen. The thing is that the people of FYROM (especially it's dispora) are claiming decent from the Makedoi and through that they claim the Greek prefecture of Macedonia. Both bother Greece and it people (especially land claim!) They say we are discrimnating against them! The funny thing is that at least we ain't hating on the Albanians now:ronaldo:

They must be vetoed from entering NATO or EU as long as they keep any name that includes the word "Macedonia" on it. That's the opinion representing 90% of Greece. I don't know what are the ambitions of our pathetic government though.

Greece has put a veto on FYROM already and they will not join NATO. Greece will also veto FYROM's bid for the E.U. as well. So until FYROM changes its name without the word "Macedonia" in it, as Greece also has a province named Macedonia, then FYROM will be going no where.

Does it really matter??.....in about 20 years or so FYROM will be majority Albanian and they will demand independance just like they did in Kosovo.

It will.....The Albanian government can barely organize a one man parade let alone be an integral member of an international organization. It does not surprise me that Albania is getting propped up from Kosovo to NATO....giving "power" to the least oraganized and least powerful country in that region gives the most power to the West because they can more easily influence policies and control resources.

I agree. Top Post. The west has a habit of creating new counties in areas that it would like to influence.
Yes, thats why I hope to god Serbia and Bosnia aren't foolish enough to accept a dirty EU bid. It's like throwing yourself into handcuffs.

The problem with the E.U, if you're a small country... you're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't.

And you barely can find saying something clever and something that makes sense, and is on topic, and let far alone to make such statements , as such as those as like you really have an idea ABOUT IT :boo:

I can't say if FYROM will be majority Albanian, (not nessesarily) ..
But I can tell you, that Western Part of FYROM, WAS and IS majority Ethnic Albanian ! The ethnic Albanians of western Fyrom even still to these day call that part of the country, with its original ancient name, ILIRIDA the ancient name of that tribe, so they are the real Iliridans. and FYROMANIANS are.. well we all know what they are, (bulgar-serbian mixed ppl) , which means Ethnic Albanians have equal rights and as well can , consider fyrom as their own country as like as "fyromanians" can. (that is of course if we still want a FYROM country in its actual Borders)

Albania and Greece generaly have Ok relations and remember that the ALBANIAN HERO Skenderbeg did libertate alot of greek terrortory in the fight against The Ottomans.
