Czechs put six past Sweden


The Czech Republic were in free-scoring form

The Czech Republic stated their intent to reach a second UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals in three years after striking six goals without reply against Sweden.

Quick-fire goals
Despite missing an early penalty, the Czech Republic led on 34 minutes through Jakub Štourač. Matej Vydra came off the bench to double the lead in the 56th minute and, in a four-minute spell just past the hour, Štourač, Václav Kadlec and Petr Putz further extended the advantage. Substitute Jan Dolezel completed the scoring in added time to leave the Czech Republic, runners-up in 2006, in a good position for Friday's encounter with Slovakia, who lost 3-1 to group hosts and Sweden's next opponents, Serbia.

Sweden produce spirited response

Sweden won to end Slovakia's hopes. Sweden came from behind to defeat Slovakia and recover from their disastrous opening to UEFA European Under-17 Championship Elite round Group 4 in Serbia and keep themselves in with a chance of qualifying for the finals.

Comeback

A 6-0 loss to the Czech Republic on Wednesday had left Sweden with a lot to do to earn a berth in Turkey as group winners, while Slovakia fell 3-1 to Serbia. Another reverse for either side would end their campaign, and it looked grim for Sweden when Slovakia took a tenth-minute lead. But Robin Söder levelled 15 minutes later and his strike partner Viktor Lundberg won the game just past the hour. As Serbia beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in the other game, Sweden need to gain maximum points against the home side on Monday and hope their Matchday 1 nemeses do not defeat neighbours Slovakia.

I have no idea how it will go for Sweden but we have a good team and anything can happen.

Players to keep an eye on: Martin Olsson (Blackburn), Marcus Berg (Groningen), Ola Toivonen (Malmö FF) and Rasmus Elm (Kalmar FF).
