Wayne Rooney is playing today. Man Utd have only lost 5 games all season and in each of those Rooney wasn't playing. Also, he always plays well against Arsenal. Watch this space.

Fabio Capello is at the game. He is is watching a vast amount of games in England. Slow start to this game, I expect it to get lively soon though as no team wants a draw due to EPL and CL fixtures coming up. :)

First of all....Man u owned Arsenal's ass today!!!! It was fantastic. Finally a game that does the EPL justice (even tho it was in the FA cup :)).

That must send a marker down that Man U are not out of this race.

Gunner
02-16-2008, 06:49 PM
finally a game to give EPL justice? haha, mate your so in denial! you even said it yourself that the 1st half of the season started with a bang!

this is what we see every week mate, this wasnt even one of the best games this season.

the reason? because arsenal were poor, manchester played very well today, excellent technical passing, Nanis goal, carricks through ball, even the great totti would be proud of that one.. Rooney scuffed a few chances today but my god he was good today.

wenger got it all wrong and it was an off day for arsenal. too many reserve players in the team today against man u.

u wudnt have noticed ronaldo wasnt playing the way man u were playing lol

well done manchester.

title is still ours though :)

02-16-2008, 07:09 PM
Lehmann was fantastic. What can I say..... could've been more hahaha 7-0... 8-0??

Lehmann is best goalkeeper in the world lol he saved 7 shots on target... 5 of which were world class saves

02-16-2008, 07:19 PM
of course lehman is king... its just the arsenals defence dat was garbage today arsenal always blames lehman i hate dat sh--t :smoking:

Gunner
02-16-2008, 07:24 PM
no one blames lehmann.. we left him out because almunia was playing better.

and yeh, our defense was the worse today, we had no sagna and clichy, so man u just attacked our wings all day. our midfield was terrible, and bendtner up front on his own was useless.

to be honest though we have 14 players in our whole squad who have NO injury!
this is the problem we have when we get injuries, we have no one to cover like man u and chelsea have.

we need the ade - edu strike force for the milan game!

man of the match votes?

mine goes to rooney, with nani close 2nd..

1-1 Tonight with Arsenal winning 2-0 in the replay.

Man united don't have enough to win this tie but I have been proved wrong before.

Excellent prediction Andy

To be fair no one expected it to be so one sided. I expected to win of course but had predicted a 2-1 to Utd. Arsenal had 9 players on the injury list but still had a stong team that just didn't perform. Some people have criticised Wenger for leaving out the likes of Adebayor and Flamini but they are both carrying knocks just as everyone on the Arsenal bench was so they were never likely to start with the CL game coming up. I'm sure Wenger was still confident the team he played could do a good job!

First off Man U were awesome and it wasn't the first team playing either. No Giggs, Scholes, Ronaldo or Tevez but I thought Nani and Anderson had a great game. Rooney was the best player on the pitch with his workrate but that's nothing new. Fletcher also had a good game. I only recall one shot from Arsenal that looked half dangerous. Utd were THAT good! Infact the scoreline flattered Arsenal. If Utd's shooting had been better it would have been a lot more. I don't really think Lehmann was as good as people are making out though. He certainly didn't make 5 world class saves! I recall one really good save (but hardly world class). Utd's poor shooting was more to blame than Lehmann's performance.

I still rate Man U's 1999 game against Arsenal that finished 2-1 higher than this. That game was close and was full of incidents. The three that stick out were the sending off of Roy Keane, Schmeichel saving a penalty and Giggs' wonder goal winner - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r3GyFDonx0 ... it still brings a tear to the eye. Infact I was watching the game in the local pub and had to head for the toilets when Arsenal were awarded the penalty as I couldn't watch. A mate of mine ran into the toilets screaming Schmeichel had saved it and I came running back into the pub to jeers because I hadn't stuck around to watch it  That game and the 1999 CL final win against Bayern are probably my two favourite games ever.

Anywhere here's to Arsenal losing their lead. This cup win could be the start of a good fightback for Utd. They've been terrible in the last two premiership games. Arsenal are still firm favourites with a big lead but they still have to come to Old Trafford in the league so anything can happen yet. Utd can't afford to drop anymore points though.

Gunner

arsenal are still a team that wasnt meant to be title challangers for another couple years because how young and aparently undeveloped the team is. its only been the 1st year since henry and a few other players left and look at us now.

you havent seen anything yet from this arsenal team, theo walcott soon will be our next henry.

i like man u, they have a good team, but you cant deny arsenal play the better football. tactically and technically we are one of the if not the best in the world.

Gavmundo

Well of course I respect Wenger and his style of play but many teams can boast they pley the best football in the world. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course. It's not like you're a neutral here you are obviously going to play Arsenal up. As good as their football can be Wenger hasn't been a record breaker for titles won and has never won the Champions League. Doesn't really say much for so called world class football if you have little to show for it.

Wenger has been at Arsenal for 12 years now and in that time has only won three league titles and four FA cups. Pretty good but not the best. Quality of football doesn't mean much if there's nothing to show for it. Of course three premier titles and four FA cups isn't nothing but if you're going to boast of playing the best football in the world it needs backing up. Arsenal are already out of the FA Cup, Carling Cup (no big loss there) and have a very tricky away game to Milan to progress in the CL. If they get knocked out of that the Premiership is the only piece of silverware there is to go for. Not great when you consider Arsenal are, according to you, the best in the world in terms of quality ;)

Gunner

i mean the style of the game they play, its not always the best way to win trophies, but man i wudnt change it for anything, its so good to watch.

arsenal are doing amazing considering they have a very small budget compared to chelsea and manchester united.

BRISTOLUK
02-26-2008, 12:40 PM
It's a bit of a myth that Arsenal has a small budget. They haven't made several hugely expensive single signings like ManU, but they have spent or commited to large amounts for some individuals. £6m for Pires wasn't a cheap transfer in 2000, Reyes cost maybe £15m and Walcott's fee may become the full £12m.

From the annual Deloitte review of football finances here are the wage bills for the 'big four' clubs - 2006 (the most recent I could find)

Chelsea - £114m
Manchester Utd - £85m
Arsenal - £83m
Liverpool - £69m

Given that ManU has a bigger squad of established players you'd expect their wage bill to be way in excess of Arsenal's.

I suspect the gap has grown since 2006 with Arsenal saving on Henry's wages and ManU having signed a few more players, but the gap may still not be the one you'd expect for a club with a bigger squad and more established 'name' players.

Whichever way you look at it, Arsenal are the third highest spenders over several years and a long way from having a small budget.

baj

I would have thought the dippers have spent more than Arsenal.

Gunner
02-26-2008, 10:43 PM
arsenal havent spent anywhere near as much as man u or chelsea in the last few season. maybe those figures include spendings from many years ago but not recently.

i would like to see these figures including the dates because arsenal havent spent much more than 12 millions for a player in a long long time.

Gavmundo
02-27-2008, 12:32 AM
Man U tend to spend more because when we're interested in a player their value shoots up by 500%. The wages is the biggest payout. The transfer fee isn't so much the biggest deal.

Wenger is good at spotting talent and goes for players that aren't classed as world class and tends to find good deals. Teams like Chelsea and Man U go for big names that come with big price tags especially if they're based in England who's fees tend to be 2-3 times as much as you'd get players for elsewhere. Arsenal's budget certainly isn't small. If Wenger wants a player badly enough the club will fork out whatever it takes to get him it's just that Wenger is good at bargain hunting.

To be honest it doesn't matter what a team pays for a player it's all about how well that player fits in the team. Who cares who spends the most? Doesn't matter! ll that matters is which team is winning trophies. Chelsea have definately spent the most in recent years and despite a couple of titles it hasn't done them much good recently.

BRISTOLUK
02-27-2008, 11:50 PM
arsenal havent spent anywhere near as much as man u or chelsea in the last few season. maybe those figures include spendings from many years ago but not recently.

Paul...these figures are not transfer fees. They were the wage bills only for the season 2005/06. Deloitte releases figures for each year and as I said, they are the most recent figures I was able to find and they are taken from the clubs accounts. The previous years had the same clubs being the high wage payers so the pattern is there, just minor differences each time.

For Arsenal to be paying nearly as much in total wages as ManU to fewer players, suggests that the club may be attracting players by the sizes of salaries rather than transfer fees. Possibly.

But season after season they have been paying the third highest wage bill in the Prem League.

In that season, their wage bill was £83m compared to Liverpool's £69m. That's quite a difference - 20% more for a supposedly small budget. The next highest wage payers have been Newcastle @ £52M. So 'small budget' Arsenal spent 60% more on player wages in that one season than Newcastle.

I'm not having a go, just saying that Arsenal are not the low spending club people think. If you're signing players out of contract, or near the end of one, or players who aren't big names yet, you save a lot on transfer fees. That saving may be going on wages.
