His name is Dragan Umicevic. His nickname is "Hockey's Ibra". He's a tricky player with some good moves. He's drafted by Edmonton Oilers.

Yeh he's a great player. He had a tough year in Russia last season but he's back in the Swedish League again and he has started to come back to his old skills again. He was just amazing during the NHL lockout season when he played with Olli Jokinen(NHL star) in Södertälje. He got alot of praise from him and he played some NT games aswell. I hope he can take the next step and prove his worth on a more regular base.

btw we lost 18-1 to Armenia but since they cheated and had some American players in their lineup we ended up getting the win 5:0 :third:

1. Greece 2 2 0 0 4 pts
2. Bosnia 2 1 0 1 2 pts
3. Armenia 2 0 0 2 0 pts

Dragan Umicevic is Serbian. You can read an interview with him on Hockey's Future.

HF: I’ve read that you were born in Croatia and then moved to Sweden?
DU: No, I was born in Serbia, in Bosnia. I’m a Serb.

(Note: Dubica is in what is now Bosnia-Herzegovina, maybe five minutes south of the Croatian border. Of course, it was all part of Yugoslavia at one time. Umicevic is of Serbian ancestry, not Croatian, born in a part of what was then Yugoslavia and is now Bosnia-Herzegovina.)

For the full interview, visit http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/7477/qa_with_dragan_umicevic/

BiH is just starting with hockey and I believe is ranked last in the world, even behind Mexico, South Africa, Turkey, Indonesia and others.

My dream would be that hockey be as popular as football and that every country had a decent team. There is no competition in international hockey. There are 8 very good teams, and another 8 who can be called hockey teams. The rest is pretty much a joke. Out of former Yugoslavia, Slovenia is obviously the best team. They took part in several World Championships in A Division with the best teams in the world. Already an NHL Superstar, Anze Kopitar was born and raised in Slovenia. Anze played all his hockey in Slovenia. Croatia (29th) and Serbia (30th) are on the same level although Croatia qualified for B Division for next year while Serbia is staying in C. The two played each other in Zagreb in front of 9,000 fans! (2-0 Croatian victory). There are several NHL players with Croatian or Serbian descent (perhaps Bosnian as well). Radivojevic, Lucic, Lukowich, Sarich, Popovic, Sakic, Jovanovski, Vlasic, Fistric, etc. There have also been several ones in the past, such as the Mahovlich brothers, Zezelj, Brimsek, Smrke, Kastelic, Kuznik, etc.

Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia all have a domestic league as well. In Serbia, last year's semifinal playoff between Partizan and Red Star was played in front of 6,000 fans in Pionir Hall.

I'm happy Serbia u18 was just promoted to Division II after beating Turkey 12-0, Bulgaria 13-0, Iceland 4-0 and Armenia 16-0.

By the way, Lukacevic (Serbia &/or Montenegro) was the first Yugoslav-born player to be drafted by an NHL team along with Anze Kopitar, both by the LA Kings. We are sure making progress. :) I really wonder how good those BiH, Serbia, Croatia, etc. players are. I wonder if I'm better than them or what, since I'm actually a pretty solid hockey player.

Also Sinter where did you find that new jersey?

LOOK BORIS our hockey team is not profesional and it is an ametuer league becuase nobody plays hockey in Bosnia and there is no intrest in making clubs or hockey rinks, this is becuase of the conflict in the 90's which shattered our country and the Bosnian goverment are focusing funds for Football, Basketball which are much better sports.

^ hahaha. you don't have to cry.

Of course your hockey team is not professional, and don't talk about an amateur league because there is no league at all. The fact there are no rinks and clubs doesn't have anything to do with the war, fool. It's just not a traditional sport in the Balkans. There are terribly rich countries who don't invest in hockey either, such as Great Britain for example. They don't invest in basketball either. Their thing is football, rugby, Formula 1, and what not. Every country has its priorities, and the lack of hockey infrastructure everywhere in the Balkans doesn't have anything to do with the civil war.

Even in the old Yugoslavia, hockey was played in front of filled up arenas, wether it be in Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade. The Yugoslav national team also made several appearances at the Olympic Games (some 6-7 appearances) and even finished among the best 8 at times. But, there was never hockey in the region of BiH back in the day, except for the fact hockey was played in Zetra Hall in Sarajevo in 1984 which was the first time hockey was seen on BiH territory while Serbia for example, is a member of the IIHF since 1939.

There is currently a regional league played between clubs of Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. Also, Manny Malhotra played from the Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL) played for HC Red Star Belgrade during the NHL lockout in 2004/05. I'm sure things are getting better, and soon BiH will be ranked as well and perhaps joing Division II one day.

hockey is like a recreational sport, playing during the winter for the fun of it when you can't play other sports in some countries like in the Balkans... while in other countries like Canada, their national sport is hockey and they have like 5000 rinks and play it all the time. depends really what kind of nation you are.

Good job at the Olympics, but soon Forsberg, Sundin, Alfredsson, Lidstrom and others will be too old. That's the core of the Swedish team and has been for years, and now it's going away. I don't see any amazing superstars coming out from Sweden at the moment, even though the junior national team didn't do too bad at the last juniors.

Thanks man. We won the WC at the same year aswell. The first nation ever who has done that.

---

Forsberg, Sundin, Alfredsson and Lidström has been our golden generation for sure. They've been outstanding but our future looks bright and it will always come amazing players from a hockey country like Sweden. Just look at Nicklas Bäckström, he leads the Rookie League and will probably win the Calder Trophy before other amazing talents such as Kane, Toews etc.

We didn't do to bad in last juniors? Hey man we actually won against Canada which no country has done i juniors for years. We lost in overtime in the final though against Canada but we earned something better. Our next generations are even better than those guys who almost won in the last juniors.

Sweden will always produce amazing players. That's just how it is.
