South Africa’s Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has joined in the debate over the England manager by saying the job should have gone to an Englishman.

Parreira, who has managed Brazil and Saudi Arabia at World Cups claims there is enough talent in this country, not to have had to resort to hiring Italian Fabio Capello.

"The foreign countries that I've worked with have not had the qualified coaches to take over for a big competition," he said.

"But the English school for producing coaches is a good system and I don't think the English national team need a foreign coach.

"I can't believe that in the first, second, third and fourth divisions you could not find somebody able to coach the national team. I've nothing against Sven-Goran Eriksson or Fabio Capello, whom I respect and are good coaches, but I think the national coach should be someone from England.

"Perhaps the press are too harsh and don't give enough credit to the local coaches. I cannot imagine Argentina or Brazil or even the Italian or German national teams ever having a foreign coach - especially Brazil. I just cannot imagine it and I don't think it will ever happen" he added.

The experienced coach also had words of advice for the incoming Italian trainer.

"When somebody goes from one country to another country to take a job as the national coach it is not only a question of knowing about football" Parreira explained.

"It is a question of learning the culture, the style, the history of the country's football. This is so important. You must read about and study the football culture and the big players in the country's history.

"You can't just come to a country and revolutionise everything. Any coach who comes to Brazil has to respect the ball-possession and the pace of the game there. You cannot change that.

"Whatever the style is, the English direct game or the German pressing game, you have to respect the school which has been there for a hundred years. You can't change that or adjust it to your philosophy."

we dont need a foreign coach, we just need the best. and capello probably is the best coach in the world thats available, if sir alex or wenger had been available then it would have gone to either of them maybe.

Complete crap! Fans don't care what nationality the coach is as long as he gets the team playing well. Fans of a national team are no different that fans of a club. They want the best coach for the job and none of the English coaches are good enough.

When Fergie leaves Man U I won't be saying well the coach has to be English or British. I'll want the best available at the time. Doesn't matter what nationality the coach is it matters what he can do for the club.

Last time England went with an English coach was McLaren and look what happened. The last English coach before him was Kevin Keegan and look what happened then. The last English coach we had that had us playing good football was Hoddle and before him Venables. That's a long time ago! When McLaren got the job he was about 3rd choice. Who wants a 3rd choice as manager?

If the FA had chosen and English manager they'd have made a big mistake and if the appointment had gone wrong again we'd be asking why a foreign coach hadn't been appointed?

I'd love to know what wonderful English coach Parreira has seen that can steer the national team to victory? Mark Hughes? He's done well enough with Blackburn but I doubt he'd have wanted the job and what has he actually won? Erm ... nothing? Harry Rednapp probably would have taken it... he's a good coach ... erm what has he won?? Oh yea er nothing!

And poor little Capello the coach no one wants managing England what has this waste of space achieved?? Oh he's only won the Scudetto seven times, The Champions League, The super cup, La liga and a number of Italian cups. Yea what country in its right mind would want that loser??

We have already tried this with Steve McClaren and look what happened. When English managers become good enough, that's when we should start appointing them as national coach.

Steve McLaren blamed the exit on the lack of English talent in the game. Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Owen, Wright-Phillips to name a few. All have played for big clubs and they are inferior talent in the world of football? Do me a favour!

I don't even like to think about that! :stop:

its not the end of the world, at the moment we needed some big changed to sort out the english national team, that meant bringing in the best of everything, including coach.

i think harry redknapp will get his chance after capello, harry is a top class coach, hes got proof now from lifting the FA Cup this year with Portsmouth.
