Greek police say a fan of Olympiakos has been stabbed to death following Wednesday's game with Panathinaikos
Greece is in a state of shock after police confirmed that a fan was killed in clash between rival sets of fans.
Rival clubs Olympiakos and Panathinaikos had met in a Cup match on Wednesday night, but trouble flared in the coastal resort of Loutsa, just outside Athens, as two Olympiakos fans returned home from the game.
Police say they were attacked by a mob of Panathinaikos fans in the early hours of Thursday morning outside a café.
Both were stabbed in the chest: 24-year-old Theophilos Stavrakis suffered fatal wounds while 26-year-old Costas Bakandritsas survived theatre and is now in a stable condition.
Greek police said three attackers had been arrested, with the search on for another, but they denied the incident was football related.
"This fight was not about football teams, it was for private reasons," said a spokesman, who also said that Stavrakis had been banned from all Greek football matches for two years after a previous arrest in 2005.
