Read a club statement: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm it has agreed terms with Lokomotiv Moscow for the transfer of Branislav Ivanovic.
"A work permit application has also been successful for the player.
"The transfer is now subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing of the medical."
This brings to an end a long-running race for the talented Serb, which has seen Juventus, Inter and Manchester United all become involved.
Ivanovic rose to prominence both as a Serbian international and a Loko stalwart, having spent the past two years at the Russian outfit.
Chelsea haven't yet announced a transfer fee for the defender, who was under contract with the Muscovites until 2011, but the sum is estimated by the Russian press to be worth up to 15 million euros (£11.2m), while fees between 12 and 14 million euros (£9-10.5m) have been mooted elsewhere.
Ivanovic is expected to pen a five-year deal after completing his medical in London. The player arrived in the English capital on Tuesday, but has yet to speak to the press.
