Iran appoint Portugal's Jorge as national coach

TEHRAN, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Iran appointed Portugal's Artur Jorge as their coach on Wednesday ahead of 2010 World Cup qualifiers starting in February, Iran's official IRNA news agency said.

Iran have been without a coach since the departure of Amir Ghalenoei after they were knocked out of the Asian Cup quarter-finals by South Korea in July last year.

Jorge, 61, has previously been in charge of the Swiss and Portuguese teams and quit as Cameroon coach after their quarter-final exit at the 2006 African Nations Cup.

Earning his credentials by taking FC Porto to victory in the 1987 European Cup, Jorge has also worked in France, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

German Winfried Schaefer and former French national team coach Jacques Santini had earlier been mentioned as possible candidates for the Iranian post.

I hope they pull it off - Emirates use to have a good team back in the day - I'm not sure how good they are now but Iran is the favorite to win the group and advance

Iran has plenty and plenty of potential. It's their association and politics that hold it back in the same place for the last 5 years. lol I remember when Iran beat USA... one of my favorite times haha

They have friendly with Costa Rica. I predict Iran 2-0 as outcome. Iran isn't at perfect place right now and their best players aren't playing for them, lol, and their government is keeping them from their potential, but they have a good league, very competetive, and great fans. There will be a revival of Persian football in 2008-2009, they will be very tough opponents in the future.
