Referee Pulls Out Red Card, Then A Gun

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysian referee took out his gun and fired warning shots in the air after a local soccer match turned unruly following the suspension of a player, a newspaper said Tuesday.

The referee, who was also a policeman, ran to his patrol car to get his gun after players mobbed him for showing the red-card to one of them, the New Straits Times said.

"We are investigating as to whether the policeman was justified in taking out his firearm and discharging it, and also why he had it with him during the match," it quoted Hussin Ismail, police chief in the southern Johor state, as saying.

The policemen was taken into custody for suspected misuse of firearms.

Five players, aged between 23 and 40, were also being held for questioning and could be charged for rioting, the paper said.

That was really terrible ... i think he misused his weapon. He claimed he feared for his life because the riot was getting a bit out of hand. I dunno but that was just dumb!! He shouldn't be bringing the gun to the game at all....stupid cop!!!

Haha he didn't shoot at the players fener but towards the air as a warning shot!!! But it's still pretty stupid thing to do and a total disgrace to the police reputation here :sad:.

He's not a profesional referee thats for sure!

I don't think he would have brought a gun just because. Maybe he's been in past games where it got out of hand, or he's witnesed something simmilar, and this time, he just came more prepared, :D.

Not that it's right to bring a gun to the match, but I bet it made everyone else realize who was in charge, :lol:
