Fenerbahce have gotten very, very lucky. Extremely lucky, in fact.

Could've been better with Porto, but still Sevilla is definitly a team we can beat.

Reactions? :D :D :D

very pleased considering it was down to Sevilla and Chelsea. it will be tough, Sevilla are a great team, but we still have a great chance to advance

Sevilla is not that bad. It's the stronger teams you can easily beat in most of the cases.
This'll be pretty hard for Fener in my opinion.

Agreed.

Still though, of the possible teams we could've drawn, porto and sevilla would be my 2 choices.

Not too shabby, but not a walk in the park either.

Great draw for you guys. Sevilla is beatable, especially in Istanbul. Be careful of Kanoute and Luis Fabiano.

No, but.. hm, another question--

Has Fenerbahce ever been this good?

Or how about this one,

Has Fenerbahce ever gotten this far in the Champions League?

..Just something to think about :)

You need to let Kezman back in the line-up or else........... lol jk
but yeah...Either team could win.....There is no favorite really.. I think the goal difference will be small...

Bosanac
12-21-2007, 10:26 PM
We gonna need to bribe a Trabzonspor player to injure Kezman again, if we want to advance.. :)

I wanted Porto or Madrid but Sevilla would've been my 3rd choice. It's definitely not an easy draw for both sides. We're very good at home but the away game is going to make the difference here. We can't get scored on in Istanbul. That might be the end for us. I'm hopeful, though.

If Fener can beat PSV, CSKA, and Inter at home, then they can definately put an end to Sevilla at home

Andygers
12-21-2007, 11:15 PM
^ I wouldn't underestimate Sevilla actually I would have them down as favourites. I reason this on the basis that they are the double Uefa cup winners and that they hammered Arsenal 3-1, considering Arsenal's recent form.

All predictions aside, I just want to see the colors I'm in love with play in the round of 16 no matter what. I can't wait. Even if we get eliminated with an aggregate like 10-0, I'm still going to be proud of this year's performance.

Sevilla was who i wanted if we couldnt get Porto.

This is Sevilla's first time in the CL Knockout round as well, so they are just as inexperienced as us. We've never beat a spanish team but we have also never been this good especially in defense.

No team can be labeled as easy anymore. We are not pushovers and neither are they. Imo if we can pull of a 2-0 win at home, we can definetly draw in Spain.

We need everyone to be healthy especially our defense.

Bosanac
12-22-2007, 06:56 AM
I figure, they can't score against us in Istanbul. We can score against their defense in Spain. That could be the tie-breaker.

The Spains underrate Fener, if Fener can win in Istanbul the chance to get into the next round will be very good.

The D-Fense of Sevilla is the flaw but their forwards are very fine. And also Sevilla is collecting cards like others Yu-Gi-Oh Cards.

Just beat it! :Pray2:

Lol that was funny. But yea, this home game should be the most intense european game we have ever played, i cant wait to see the atmosphere. I believe our players will perform well and because this is sevilla's first game vs fener, they will definitly have trouble adjusting to our style. I find it hard to see them beating us at home, at most maybe they will get a draw. So this tie will most likely be decided in spain whether we win or tie in istanbul.

galleria zoom It's back to business in the Champions League as two teams playing in the knockout stages for the very first time in the tournament slug it out to win a place in the quarter-finals. The tempestuous Şükrü Saracoğlu is the setting for part one of this encounter as fiery Fenerbahçe square off with sizzling Sevilla.

Fifth Time for Fener

While Fenerbahçe are no strangers to Europe's elite championship, this is the first time in five attempts they have made it out of the group phase and into the knockout round.

Although their opponents in the last 16, Sevilla, are to be no pushovers, manager Zico can at least take comfort in the fact that the Spanish visitors will have just as less experience as his side at this stage of the competition and both teams will head into the clash on a level playing field.

The former Japan coach has assembled a good mix of young and experienced local talent as well as a generous touch of South American flair. There are as many as six Brazilian players in the squad - four of them with EU citizenships - and it is no wonder why the Turkish champions, with the help of a little samba magic, are enjoying their breakthrough season in the Champions League this term.

Gone are the days where the Sarı Kanaryalar would struggle to pick up a win in the group stages. They recorded their best ever finish this time, coming in strongly in second place behind Inter Milan in Group G, losing only one game - and that was at the Giuseppe Meazza. Their eleven point haul was also the best tally by a Turkish club in this competition, beating Galatasaray's previous record of ten points in the 2000/01 season. That in itself will be considered a huge victory by their fans!.

In the Turkish Süper Lig, Zico's canaries are going at it hammer and tongs with their fierce city rivals for domestic supremacy. They are currently second in the league, just a mere point behind Gala and they have now gone ten games on the trot without defeat, including a memorable 2-0 triumph over the Aslans in early December.

Fener's major forte is their supreme home record: they have won 13 out of their 15 home matches on all fronts so far this season, and it will continue to be the driving force behind their Champions League endeavour.

Sevilla Sailing Through

Of the 16 teams remaining in the Champions League, Sevilla have the least experience of them all. But make no mistake, they are quite the experts when it comes to knockout cup competitions, as their two UEFA Cups and one Spanish Kings Cup will bear testament.

The Andalucians' maiden voyage in Europe's cream of the crop competition can already be deemed a huge accomplishment, regardless of what happens from here on out. Not only did they sail through to the knockout phase in their very first attempt but they did so convincingly, beating 2005/06 finalists and current English Premier League leaders Arsenal to top spot in Group H.

But having a club president as ambitious and success-hungry as José María del Nido, Sevilla will not consider anything a triumph unless they make it through to the quarter finals at a minimum - possibly even the semis.

The Nervionese club certainly have the potential to follow in the footsteps of fellow unheralded Spanish counterparts Villarreal from two seasons ago and advance deep into the tournament. Indeed, if they are to re-appear in Europe's biggest stage next season, they not only have to go far, but they may have to go all the way and win it.

Manolo Jiménez's side are currently sixth in the Primera Liga, five points away from the coveted fourth spot. Although they seem to be back in form after an extremely tumultuous start to the season, the tug-of-war for a berth in next season's edition is unrelenting and the Andaluz side will need to run an impeccable race from now till the end of the term and also hope for their rivals to slip up.

But when they are at the very top of their game, they are often unstoppable and they have a knack of shamelessly steamrolling past the big guns. And for many of Europe's top dogs who have yet to come facet to face with them, they had better watch out!

TEAM NEWS

Fenerbahçe SK

The team's leading goalscorer Semih Şentürk is out of the clash after suffering a recurrence of a prior knee injury last week. He is expected to return to training on Tuesday but Zico will most likely rest him to avoid re-aggravating the problem. The vacancy upfront should be taken up by Mateja Kežžman, who is no stranger to Spanish opposition after his brief spell in La Liga.

Defensive midfielder Stephen Appiah will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to a blood clot in his knee. Claudio Maldonado was signed from Santos in the January transfer window to cover the absence and the Chilean could make his Champions League bow after being added to the revised squad list for this competition.

Defenders Diego Lugano Gökhan Gönül will be suspended for the return leg should they pick up a booking in this tie.

Probable Starting XI (4-4-2): Demirel - Gönül, Lugano, Edu, Roberto Carlos - Alex (c), Şahin/Maldonado, Aurélio, Boral - Deivid, Kežman

FC Sevilla

Midfielders Adriano and Seydou Keita will both be available for selection after serving out their one match bans in the final group game. Inspirational goalkeeper Andrés Palop, who suffered a fractured right hand in early December, has made a successful comeback and has already featured in several league games.

Uruguayan striker Ernesto Chevantón is sidelined for up to four weeks after going under the knife to correct knee ligament problems, but young leftback José Crespo has recently recovered from a torn thigh muscle and will travel with the squad to Istanbul, although he is still short on match fitness.

Khalid Boulahrouz and Aleksandr Kerzhakov has been omitted for technical reasons.

Probable Starting XI (4-4-2): Palop - Alves (c), Escudé, Fazio, Dragutinović - Navas, Poulsen, Keita, Capel - Kanouté, Fabiano

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Fenerbahçe SK - Deivid

Roberto Carlos may be the high profile Brazilian in the team but 28 year old Deivid is the player who's been catching all the attention, especially after his wonder acrobatic volley goal against Internazionale in the first group match. You just feel that there is more to come from the ex-Santos and Sporting Lisbon striker.

FC Sevilla - Luis Fabiano

Sevilla's answer to Deivid is ofcourse Luis Fabiano. The red hot, €60 million-rated former Porto man is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe at the moment and a few more goals in this competition to add to his burgeoning collection will certainly do no harm in heightening his profile even more.

PREDICTION

Fener have a 100% record at home in the Champions League, winning all three of their group matches and one in the qualifying round. They are a formidable force at the Şükrü Saracoğlu and Sevilla will be facing their sternest away test since their visit to Arsenal on opening day. Still, the visitors should have enough firepower to nab an away goal at the very least.

Fenerbahçe 2-1 Sevilla

I missed 3/4 of the games because I was totally burning out from all the studying and work I had to do. Even one of my professors was like: "Boy oh boy ... I wish I didn't have to be here today ... does anyone know who's playing tonight?"

Anyway, I don't mind what Zico has going with this great Fenerbahce team -- I've been following the club's progress for about 1 year. Good luck Fenerbahce, score lots of goals, and may the best team win.

Okay guys I know I'm not particularly the most popular person on the Fener board but here is how I think it will go:

Its going to be hard tonight and in a fortnight as well but I think you guys have a goal in you tonight, I just have that feeling. I know a lot of the Fener fans believe that this is an easy draw but it is not, remember this is a team that defeated Arsenal when they were at their peak and are double UEFA cup winners. This is why I think tonights score will be Fenerbahce 1-1 Sevilla.

It was a good game, but Edu seriously wrecked your chances of progressing. Sorry, i don't see it happening anymore with sevillas home form.

One thing that really pissed me off was how long sevilla was on the ground for.. after every tackle they were lying on the ground -_-

Good game and win, but you have to learn not to concede so much. Best of luck in Spain, Sevilla is pretty sick there.

I hope we can at least get a draw there. We probably can, if Zico realizes that starting with Edu in European matches means starting 1-0 down.

Even if we dont advance, i must say im really satisfied and proud for our Europe performance this year. We won every single game at home.

Btw, when is the second leg? I hope Carlos is OK by then.

from a neutral point of view, it was a great game, end to end action. Semih's goal will be vital...now we don't HAVE to score unless we concede in Sevilla. We gave up two really crap goals but there defense sucks so we should be able to score again there.

off bee offff!!!!,,, good thing we won!

Like I said, I'm worn out right now; can someone tell me the possible score-lines we can get in Sevilla that will still make us progress?

aslanlar
02-21-2008, 12:47 AM
hahahah, don't get me wrong, i hope they go through!

If you watched the first 8 minutes or so, you will see how much of a threat they were, they COMPLETELY outclassed fener (although it was only 8 mins i admit) and played great. I can see them playing like that in Spain, unfortunately.

Any draw or win will result in fener progressing
Also losing by, 4-3 5-4 6-4 and so on will result in fener progressing.
3-2 loss for extra time.

So fener CAN'T lose by 2 goals, or lose 1-0 or 2-1

Totally outclassed us for 8 minutes? Yeah I'm sorry but outclassing another team for 8 minutes in a Champions League game isn't really enough for a satisfactory score. I mean, this isn't the TSL where you could score 4 goals in 20 minutes and take it from there. Fener and Sevilla were definitely evenly matched and maybe with the help of us being at home, we took the slender lead but we did not get outclassed. If Sevilla outclassed us for 8 minutes, does that mean we outclassed them for 82? There was a good 25-30 minutes when Fener had 100% control over the game.

If Fener plays the away game similar to the one in Eindhoven, we can qualify. Our only loss was the away Inter game and for the first 60 minutes we were pretty good. Fener is good enough to snatch the round regardless. Home or Away it doesn't really matter anymore. We just have to play with heart like we've been doing the past 9 games.

Well done, very tense match for both teams, and great tension makes way for great matches and this one was a thriller. Bad luck for Edu, this guy is either seriously unlucky or he is a double agent that likes to put the ball into the back of the net on purpose

With this game, the most assists in the CL belongs to Alex, with 5 altogether. He's followed by Pirlo and Djordevic.

And uhh...Edu is on the reverse side of the statistics with 3 own goals, along with 1 penalty and 1 assist (to opponent).

Mehmet Aurelio is on top of the list of the players with the most fouls committed. He's 3rd on the most fouls suffered list.

Lugano has seen the most yellow cards out of all CL players so far. (4)

And most importantly, Fenerbahce played 5 home games this season in Europe, and managed to win them all.
FB - Anderlecht 1-0
FB - Inter 1-0
FB - PSV 2-0
FB - CSKA 3-1
FB - Sevilla 3-2

Only player to score on Fenerbahce in Istanbul has been Escude so far. The other 2 goals conceded have Edu's signature.

With this 3-2 win, Fenerbahce moves up to the 43rd spot on the UEFA's ranking, where the last 5 years' performances are taken into account. Fenerbahce has earned 16.9700 points this season, making the total 48.221. Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen closely trail with 47.899 points. Shakthar Donetsk sits on the 42nd seat with 49.932 points.

This season's performance moves Fenerbahce up to 8th place in the 2007/08 rankings. Liverpool and Everton are 7th with 17.0425 points, while AC Milan closely trails with 16.8050.

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray's recent points also help out Turkey. Turkey is in 4th place in this year's rankings, with 9.000 points, right under Germany who has 9.928. Italy is 5th with 8.500.

What really matters is the last 5 years' country performance, in which we find Turkey placed in 10th place, with 30.975 points, below Netherlands who has 37.213. Scotland follows with 30.625.

I think fener will push for the 2 goals, if they accomplish this feat, they will make it to the next round for sure, i predict 2-2 or 2-1 to fener, and then they will play either porto or schlake

Fung

A decent result for Fener in Turkey, but personally I think Sevilla will progress to the next stage. Because of their extreme quality while playing at home, yesterday they demolished Real Zaragoza 5-0 at home. (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=cudBn36gxic)
That said, it is not out of the question that you will go through, but you will have to be close to flawless in defense to avoid them scoring on you. Should Sevilla get a quick goal in the match, it could get ugly seeing as you will have to go forward, and with Sevillas quickness in attack.

Fenerliyim
02-24-2008, 03:46 PM
i think fener's gonna get 1 goal at least.

We have a 1 goal advantage, anytime of win or draw will see us through.

Sevilla has home court advantage but imo that wont be much of a factor as they say it will, Fenerbahce i'm sure of gone through much more hostile enviroments and imo as a team we dont get affected as much.

Also unless sevilla gets better at set piece defending, i think thats where our goals are gonna come from. We are experts at set pieces.

and hopefully edu wont score an own goal again. And that Carlos will be back by then, if hes out we will definetly lose

You clearly have not watched many matches by Sevilla, they are night and day home and away(hey, thats a rhyme!). And it is not about going through a hostile environment either, it is about mindsets. While playing away matches you want a decent result, while at home you should win. As you have said, Sevilla's defense is not fantastic, and they suffer from it when playing on foreign soil, cause their being more cautious going forward.

At home Sevilla pretty much attack constantly, and are far more aggressive than away. I am not saying you are definitely going to lose, I am saying that this will be your hardest match by far this season. You might get away from there with a decent result, but it can also become a nasty scoreline for you should Sevilla play with such intensity and skill like they have this season against Real Madrid, Zaragoza and Arsenal to name some.

Fenerliyim
02-24-2008, 05:45 PM
Well no doubt this will be hardest match, because no team in the last 16 are pushovers, and Sevilla are definelty more talented than the teams that we vs. in the TSL. We were pretty much able to take your strikers out of commission which is not an easy feat to do.

Lets not forget FB defense had to go up against the likes of Ibrahimovic, Vagner Love, and Jo and have had much success in shutting them down. We play with 4 defenders and 2 defensive mids. Also our left winger has also played LB before. And our GK has had 5 clean sheets in the CL would be six if edu hadnt scored in our own goal against CSKA in Istanbul.

Edu imo is gonna be huge against Sevilla, hes gonna want to make up for the own goal he let in during the first game.

and hopefully the ref will give yellow cards to alves and his crew of divers for their ridiculous amount of acting. And will call the handballs you guys commit in the penalty box which he overlooked last game.
