Marcello Lippi has warned Fabio Capello he may have to drop an important player if he is to mould England into a successful team.
Steve McClaren and Sven Goran Eriksson have been criticised in the past for building their sides around certain players and not necessarily getting the balance right.
Lippi, who guided Italy to World Cup glory in 2006, insists Capello must not be afraid to make bold decisions.
He claims that Capello may have to sacrifice high-profile players if they do not fit in with what is best for the team.
Lippi told Sky Italia: "Capello's most difficult task will be to make a team become a team, something which in recent years it hasn't felt like.
"That will be the most difficult challenge.

"He will need to construct a team, the national team is not just the selection of the best players of the country. In order to make a team you may also need to drop an important player that perhaps is not on the same wavelength as the others."
Lippi has also advised Capello to overcome the language barrier as quickly as possible, so he can communicate with the England players directly.
"The fact that I don't speak English is one of the reasons why I have turned down three or four proposals in the last two years that have arrived from the English Premiership," he said.
"I have always said that a coach must transmit to his players everything that goes through his heart and head and in order to do so, he can't be talking and then asking the interpreter to translate, it's impossible."
Quite right if not a little obvious. There are many people in England who would admit a lot of the time a players profile comes ahead of the team. There's so much talk about Lampard and Gerrard being able to play together and whether Beckham should be in the team ahead of Wright-Phillips but these are problems that should be positives. It's always a bonus to have selection problems in a football league why is such an issue at international level? Any player who can't accept being dropped should retire from International football. Playing for your country is about the team not the ego!
There are millions even billions of would be national team managers out there all with their own ideas on who should be in the team (usually depending if that fans favourite player(s) is in there) but only one team selection matters and that's the manager. Whether the media or fans think the manager has got it wrong doesn't matter!
