I'm sticking my neck out again, but persistent media reports are now saying that either Pim Verbeek or Phiippe Troussier will be the next Australian head coach. Both have been in talks with the FFA and are apparently keen on the job. Both are prepared to live in Oz.

I think Troussier has more experience at WC level and both know the Asian scene very well. If Verbeek gets the job we keep the Dutch connection and he comes with St. Guus's blessing.

A difficult choice? What do you think?

Stop Press! Apparently Pim Verbeek will be announced as head coach later today. It is also rumoured that Japanese officials are holding talks in Sydney with Troussier about a return to the Blue Samurai. Funny old world!

 Yeah, imagine that. Japanese officials in Sydney holding talks with Troussier. Maybe there was a win-win situation for all involved because Pim Verbeek was confirmed as NT manager of the Socceroos at 4:38pm AEST. I don't think that there's much difference between Troussier and Verbeek. The important thing is that Australia now has an experienced manager.

...Okada has already been appointed as the head coach of Japan on a caretaker basis, with options of a full contract (although his "caretaker" one takes him to 2010)

Hi Toke

Yes, I know about Okada's contract but it was reported in two major papers here that JFA officials flew from Tokyo to Sydney to hold talks with Troussier. I haven't seen any denials either. Is the Okada contract watertight?

It's a shame about Houllier. Obviously the man is very picky or very expensive. I read that Troussier was an outside chance for the position. What about a home-grown coach?

there is nothing on most japanese websites that i looked through to suggest that Troussier will becoming back to the Japanese Nt.

However, several Japanese and Japanese/English papaers are stating that OKADA IS THE JAPANESE NT COACH

The Japan Football Association (JFA) is set to sign a contract with Takeshi Okada as manager of Japan's national soccer team that will last until the end of the final qualifying round for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, JFA officials said.

"We will appoint him on the assumption that the team will play all the games in the final qualifying round under his leadership," JFA head Saburo Kawabuchi said.

He added that if the national team qualifies for the World Cup, the JFA will ask him to lead the team during the event.

Okada, who led Japan's national team in the 1998 World Cup in France, will replace 66-year-old Ivica Osim, who suffered a stroke on Nov. 16. With Okada at the helm for the 1998 campaign, Japan qualified for the World Cup for the first time.

well, i think verbeek is still unproven, but a decent coach. he got a very inexperienced, drunked korean NT to 3rd place in asian games.

not to mention that the Korea NT team was DEVOID of any euro based players and the team captain.

he actually improved Korea's defense considerably during his time with the korea NT.

this was evidenced the most in the match against Japan where Korea, playing 1 man down the entire game were able to defeat Japan.

it wasn't his fault that the korean players were out on all night drinking binges with cheap malay and indonesian prostitutes before the games and couldn't focus.

i actually give verbeek the thumbs up. i would not have minded if he stayed on with korea nt, as i didn't think he got a fair shot.
