This is it this is when the famous saying " We welcome the chase" come into full importance. We welcome the chase from Lyon, we welcome the chase from their players, we welcome the chase from their fans, we welcome the chase to get to the last 16!!!!!

Its do or die now, we win we can all celebrate same with a draw but a lose then we hand our place to our French rivals. I believe that we will win this game and advance, we must or their will be a lot of disgruntled Rangers fans (Including me). We have the fans and the arena to do the business, I am 100% sure we have the players to do it (we showed that in Lyon), its just the tactics I'm worried about. We could play 4-5-1 and battle till the death or go with 4-4-2, which whilst giving us more freedom will leave us completely open to Lyon counter attacks. Smith better get this tactics right or we might pay the price and end up in the Uefa cup.

WATP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm confident Smith and the boys can see us through :D Ibrox isn't quite the fortress Parkhead is, but Lyon definately won't be looking forward to coming here and with a 4-5-1 formation and an early goal I'll say 2-0 Rangers

p.s. being careful not to hype this up too much - we're only just recovering from the last match we were too confident about.... Pannuchi, anyone?

Andygers

^ 2-0 sounds good although i think we will only win by a goal, Lyon are on really good form at the moment and will be a real test.

Lol don't remind me of Pannuchi.....

Match facts

Rangers and Lyon have only met once in Competitive matches, the Result was 3-0 to Rangers in the stade Gerland.
Rangers and Lyon both have 7 points but a draw would do for Rangers as they have a better head to head record
Finally If Lyon win it will be the first time they have won in Scotland

This is the biggest match for Rangers in years - victory would be massive and could see our seeding improve from 4th to 2nd in next year's CL.

Now that Celtic are through we MUST progress from this group, it will be a disaster if we do not qualify but I am weary of Lyon, they are on top form. We just have to play our best and not give any stupid free-kicks away (Juniniho :worried:)

^^ agreed - if we lose an early goal (and i really really hope we don't) the last thing we need is the crowd on the player's backs. Ibrox has an amazing atmosphere but the fans expect a lot and can let their feelings be known if the players aren't giving everything....let's hope there's no need for any of that on wednesday :D

4-5-1 is almost certain as it has worked so far. as for who should go upfront i don't think we can start boyd cause we need 11 players playing their arses off and you don't get that with him. that only leaves cousin which isn't a bad thing as he ran lyon riot in the last meeting. Come on the Gers!! :D :D

Come on the Gers!! :D :D You're completely correct about Boyd, I mean he is deadly in the 4-4-2 formation but in 4-5-1 he is useless (Remember Hibs :mad2:). Also this is a game where we must play 4-5-1 because (unlike some other fans) I think Lyon will enjoy ripping us apart with all the open spaces which they can exploit, I have heard the Lyon fans saying they are more worried if we contain them because they will not know what to do!!! Lyon will play 4-3-3 for sure and this will give us the advantage in the midfield.

You say Cousin had a great game against Lyon but what has he done since, absolutely nothing. I feel he is just using us as stepping stone but I think Walter Smith will choose him up front.

Adam unfazed by Celtic success

Charlie Adam insists Rangers are under no extra pressure to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League as a result of Celtic's progress.

The Hoops have already secured their place in the latter stages by finishing runners-up in their section despite Tuesday's defeat to AC Milan.

Rangers now need at least a point against Lyon at Ibrox on Wednesday to emulate that feat and join their bitter rivals in Europe's top club competition beyond Christmas.

Adam, 21, reckons such a scenario would be a major boost for Scottish football but claims Rangers will not spend the next few days worrying about failing where Celtic have already succeeded.

"We are just focusing on ourselves - we aren't worried about what Celtic do," said the Ibrox midfielder.

"They look after themselves and we look after ourselves. The most important thing for us as players and for the club is that Rangers qualify for the last 16.

"We know it's going to be difficult but we have done well enough in the Champions League so far to prove that we can handle these games.

"It's a massive game and it was the same for Celtic the other night. It was a fabulous result for them and hopefully we can do it too.

"It would be a great achievement for Scottish football if both sides are in the last 16. I don't think it's ever been done before so it would be another step forward for Scottish football."

Jean-Claude Darcheville is the latest player to join Rangers' casualty list after suffering a tear in his hamstring against Kilmarnock last weekend.

Nacho Novo is already out with a dislocated shoulder, while DaMarcus Beasley is facing months on the sidelines with knee ligament damage sustained in the club's last Champions League outing in Stuttgart.

"The three of them are good players but there are other players who will come in and do a job and hopefully, on the night, it's good enough," said Adam.

"There is still quality in the team even though we have three players missing. It's not a worry, injuries happen in football.

"The most important thing is that the people who come in do the right job for the team and we get the right result."

Rangers can at least take comfort from the fact that, barring any incidents in training, they will have no further injury worries to contend with ahead of the visit of Lyon after the Scottish Premier League agreed to postpone Sundays game against Gretna.

It was a decision welcomed by Adam, who added: "It's important that we have everybody fit so to have the game at the weekend off is a boost because you never know the type of injuries you could pick up.

"The Lyon game is going to be a massive game for the club so hopefully we get the right result and the Gretna game was worth the call-off."

Rangers are already guaranteed at least a place in the UEFA Cup but Adam was reluctant to consider the prospect of a consolation prize after enjoying an impressive campaign so far.

He said: "The UEFA Cup is still a big competition to play in and hopefully we would go far.

"But we aren't looking at the UEFA Cup, the most important thing is looking at the last 16 of the Champions League and being in there with the big names. There are some intriguing teams to play against so hopefully it will be our night.

"We never play for a draw - we always play to win.

"We want to win the game and hopefully we can because that would take us through to the last 16 and that would be some achievement for a side who have just come together in the last six or seven months."

This is a possible line up for the game:

-------------McGregor--------------------------

----Hutton----Celluar---Weir-----Papac-------

McCulloch--Hendami--Ferguson--Thomson--Adam

That would do us well but we must add pace to the side or we are for it.

Keeper McGregor Dreads Champions League Balls

ALLAN McGREGOR was talking balls. Footballs. And he was not a happy boy.

The Rangers keeper arrived at Greaves Sports in Glasgow to promote his new Uhlsport gloves and reckons he might have to stick velcro on to the palms of them on Wednesday when Lyon arrive at Ibrox on Champions League duty.

McGregor had just taken part in a training session at Murray Park, practising with the Adidas Sportivo ball that every Champions League match has to use. It is fair to say he is not a fan.

It is fairer to say he is dreading the thought of Lyon's Brazilian maestro hitting the thing at him as if he steering it with a remote control.

McGregor experienced that at the Stade Gerland when Juninho's diving antics won a free-kick on the edge of the box. He is expecting more of the same on Wednesday - and is just hoping that by the end of the 90 minutes, Rangers' ball isn't burst.

He said: "Juninho's free-kicks are frightening but the balls we use for the Champions League are murder. We were training with them today and honestly they are c***.

"They move about like those balls you used to play with in the street. I don't know why we have to play with them but we just have to get on with it.

"Juninho doesn't try to hit them sweet. He goes for a sclaff and that makes it worse for us.

"You saw his free-kick against Barcelona from 40 yards. He skelps it and makes it dip in front of the goalie, so I'll need to watch out for it. The gaffer has told us to stop giving away daft free kicks around the box."

McGregor was scathing about Juninho's antics in the first leg and believes it is ironic that he, of all people, is asking for a strong referee at Ibrox.

He added: "Juninho's best freekick against us came after he took a dive when big Davie Weir got booked. Then you see Dida getting a two-game ban for play-acting, while Juninho gets away Scot-free. It should be about consistency.

He's asking for a strong referee at Ibrox but I'd love a strong referee to be honest.

"I'd love to see some of these players in the SPL every week but it is different over there - they get brought up to do that.

"They will be looking for freekicks because Juninho is so good at them. Last year, I get sent off against Hapoel Tel Aviv when I went out to give the boy the ball back and he skelped it at me.

"We squared up to each other and I must have had bad breath or something because he fell down and I got sent off.

"I couldn't believe it and I got a two-ban which was reduced to one. That's what can happen but we have to concentrate on our own game."

The keeper believes it would be suicidal to try to play for the goalless draw that would see Rangers through - and he is not convinced that having Sunday's match with Gretna postponed will be beneficial to his team.

He said: "We need to go out to try to win the game. I don't know how many times teams have needed just a point and didn't get it. We have to look to score.

"I don't know if having the weekend off is the best thing. It will depend on the result. If we had played the game and lost, people would be saying we should have had a free weekend. But if we don't through, they'll be saying we should have played Gretna. We've got one or two injuries, so that's why they got it postponed I think.

"In the dressing room, I think it is 50-50. Some folk want to play and some think it is best to leave it, so we can prepare properly.

"As a goalie, I'd like to be playing all the time but it's harder for the outfield players who are running about 90 minutes."

He admitted he can't wait to pull on those Uhlsport gloves for another Champions League night at Ibrox, a venue he believes has become as much of a fortress to Rangers as Parkhead has to Celtic in Europe. He said: "Maybe there is a wee bit more pressure on us because Celtic have made the last 16.

"They've done well to get through and their home form has been really good but so has ours and hopefully we can get another decent performance on Wednesday. "Ibrox is the same as Parkhead.

It's my first taste of the Champions League this season and walking out for the first game against Stuttgart was brilliant.

"There is definitely a different atmosphere for the Champions League games and the Celtic games. All the players relish playing in them and this is a good one to look forward to.

"We have to shut out the crowd if they start to get anxious. You can hear them if we are not doing well against the smaller clubs and you have to block it out.

"It's part of playing for Celtic or Rangers. If you are playing smaller clubs you are expected to hammer them and if you are only winning 1-0 they are not happy.

"But hopefully with it being the Champions League it won't be like that on Wednesday.

"It would be massive to get through. Nobody gave us a chance at the start but after the third game we knew we could get through if we beat Lyon in the last match.

"Now we only need a draw. We'd have bitten your hand off for this situation when the draw was made.

"When we got the draw in Belgrade to get through, we were just happy to be in the Champions League but you want to be playing against the Barcelonas, Lyons and Stuttgarts.

"Defensively in Europe we have been good and didn't lose a goal in any of the qualifying games.

Another clean sheet on Wednesday will do us."

Weir: Gers will give their all

David Weir says Rangers will go for a win against Lyon even though a draw will put them into the Champions League last 16 alongside Celtic.

Results on matchday five mean one point would leave the Govan club ahead of the French Champions based on their head-to-head record following a 3-0 win in Lyon earlier in October.

But Weir told Rangers World that Walter Smith's side must go looking for a win next Wednesday.

He said: "You go and try to win every game. I don't think you can play for a draw.

"At this level I don't think that would be to anybody's benefit, so I'm sure we will go and try to win the game.

"First and foremost in any game you try to stop them scoring.

"But obviously the more time we spend up their end of the park and trying to score then the less likely it is they'll score."

Weir will not take too much succour from the encouraging and comprehensive win against the French club earlier in the tournament.

He said: "The win over in France gives us a lot of confidence, it was a great result and we played well that night but we realise that we'll have to play well in the Ibrox match as well or we'll be out.

"What's happened before has not got a lot of bearing on the next game.

"I'm sure they'll be disappointed they lost the game, but that was a while ago now and they'll have moved on.

"They'll take this game as a one-off and realise that if they win it, they'll get through.

"There are top-class players right throughout their team.

"They've got internationals and quality players, as does every team in the Champions League.

"There's no doubting the quality of them and the other teams and it's important that we respect that."

Odds favour Rangers in Lyon showdown

There is everything to play for at Ibrox on Matchday 6 when Rangers FC will be looking to hold off the challenge of visitors Olympique Lyonnais in their shared pursuit of second place in Group E.

• Although the sides stand level on seven points, Rangers hold the upper hand having beaten Lyon 3-0 in France in October. The Scottish team need only avoid defeat, therefore, to stay above Lyon by virtue of their superior head-to-head record. For the French champions, only victory will do if they are to celebrate reaching the knockout rounds for the fifth consecutive season.

• Where last season Lyon booked their passage to the last 16 with two games to spare, they must attempt to do it the hard way this time round following defeats in their opening two games.

• If a 3-0 reverse at FC Barcelona on Matchday 1 was a setback, then losing their next game by the same score to Rangers left a huge dent in their ambitions. Lee McCulloch, Daniel Cousin and DaMarcus Beasley were the scorers for a Rangers side who had not won any of their previous nine away matches in the UEFA Champions League in a run dating back to 2000.

• Yet other clubs before have shown that two opening defeats need not spell UEFA Champions League elimination. FC Internazionale Milano (2006/07), Werder Bremen (2005/06), Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Newcastle United FC (2002/03) all recovered to qualify for the last 16.

• Alain Perrin's men duly revived their hopes with successive wins against VfB Stuttgart – 2-0 away, then 4-2 at home – and a 2-2 draw with Barcelona on Matchday 5. Trailing twice to goals from Andrés Iniesta and Lionel Messi, Juninho found an equaliser on both occasions, first with a seventh-minute free-kick and then a penalty on 80 minutes.

• There was further good news for Lyon that night with Rangers losing 3-2 at Stuttgart. Walter Smith's team succumbed to a Ciprian Marica strike five minutes from time in a match where they opened the scoring through Charlie Adam (27) and then looked to have claimed a point when Barry Ferguson (70) cancelled out Stuttgart's 2-1 lead given them by Cacau (45) and Pável Pardo (62).

• It was the second reverse in as many matches for Rangers, who lost 2-0 at Barcelona on Matchday 4. Yet they are unbeaten at Ibrox so far in the competition, having overcome Stuttgart 2-1 and held Barcelona 0-0.

• Overall, Rangers are undefeated in eleven home matches in UEFA club competition - 14 if qualifiers are included – taking in last season's UEFA Cup campaign and their 2005/06 run to the UEFA Champions League first knockout round.

• French side AJ Auxerre were the last foreign visitors to prevail at Ibrox, winning a UEFA Cup tie 2-0 on 15 December 2004. The circumstances then were not unlike the present ones as Rangers went into the game needing only a point to secure qualification from the group stage. Instead two goals from Bonaventure Kalou sent them tumbling out of the competition.

• If that is a positive omen for Lyon then they may also want to consider that Rangers have not won any of their last seven home encounters with French opposition, drawing three and losing four of them. The last time the Glasgow club beat a visiting French side was in September 1971 when they overcame Stade Rennais FC 1-0 in a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first-round tie.

• Lyon's two previous visits to Scotland have been to the home of Rangers' great rivals Celtic FC over in the east end of Glasgow. They won 1-0 at Celtic Park in a UEFA Cup second-round tie in November 1999 – in which goalkeeper Grégory Coupet featured – but went down 2-0 in a UEFA Champions League group stage game in September 2003.

• Lyon goalkeeper Coupet was on the losing side on his last visit to Glasgow with France for a UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying match on 7 October 2006, which Scotland won 1-0. Rangers manager Smith was in charge of Scotland that day and his side included Ferguson, McCulloch and David Weir.

• That trio together with full-back Alan Hutton all featured when Scotland won the return match in Paris on 12 September this year. Lyon's Karim Benzema appeared as a substitute for France.

• Rangers midfielder Brahim Hemdani played under Lyon coach Perrin for two years at Olympique de Marseille between 2002 and 2004.

• Rangers striker Jean-Claude Darcheville and Lyon right-back Anthony Réveillčre were team-mates at Rennes. Réveillčre made his first appearances for Rennes during the 1997/98 campaign, which was Darcheville's last with the Ligue 1 club.

Smith wary of Lyon revenge mission

Walter Smith is banking on Rangers FC's formidable home form to see them through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League as Group E reaches its climax with the visit of Olympique Lyonnais to Glasgow. With the two sides level on seven points, Rangers need only avoid defeat to reach the knockout stage thanks to their 3-0 win away to the French champions on Matchday 2.

Smith wary
Ironically, another French club, AJ Auxerre, were the last foreign team to prevail at Ibrox when a 2-0 win on 15 December 2004 knocked Alex McLeish's side out of the UEFA Cup in similar circumstances. Despite Rangers' eleven-match unbeaten home run in UEFA competition, Smith is suitably wary of opponents who will be out to avenge that reverse back in October.

'Exceptional performance'
"That statistic is something we obviously hope we can keep up," said Smith. "We maybe caught teams a bit cold earlier in the group, but Lyon's pride will have been dented by losing 3-0 at home in the first game. They'll have a far greater level of motivation for this one, so although we have a really good home record it will still have to be an exceptionally good performance from us to progress."

No illusions
Lyon coach Alain Perrin agrees about his players' extra motivation, saying: "We're going to have real drive to qualify for the last 16." Yet he is under no illusions about the size of their task. It is four years since Lyon left it this late to qualify for the knockout phase and Perrin admits that all the pressure is on his team. "Rangers are the favourites because they're better placed to qualify. They only need a draw and they have their supporters behind them," said Perrin, who saw his side lose 1-0 at SM Caen on Saturday and is still without Brazilian trio Cris, Fábio Santos and Fred as well as defender Patrick Müller.

Trio missing
Rangers may have enjoyed the luxury of a weekend off to prepare for Wednesday's showdown, but Smith also finds himself deprived of key men with the attacking trio of DaMarcus Beasley (knee), Jean-Claude Darcheville (hamstring) and Nacho Novo (shoulder) all ruled out. Daniel Cousin is expected to be handed a lone-striker role with European specialist Brahim Hemdani deployed in a holding midfield berth as Rangers bid to make the first knockout round for the second time in three seasons.

'Good players'
"We have a lot of work to do in that respect," added Smith. "From a personal point of view, we have to try and hopefully join [city rivals] Celtic [FC] in the last 16, but it will take a big performance from us to do that. Lyon have good players all over the pitch, including a couple of young players [Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa] who will be rated among the best in Europe in the next few years." A big night beckons at Ibrox and Perrin is in no mood to play down its significance. "Obviously I have been involved in big matches with previous clubs but this is the biggest challenge."

^ Yeah it was poor but we must get over it and get on with the league and the cups. We must get behind the team now and not shout them down and it must start against Hearts on Saturday!!!!!!

Now that I have had a few days to cool down I am ready to digress the game:

Now for a start, what the hell was Cousin all about. He was as lazy as me on a Saturday morning!!!! He just stood behind their defenders and never gave anyone a chance to play the ball into him when it counted the most, he should take a serious look at himself. However the midfield played better, slightly. Barry Ferguson was trying to make things happen but no one wanted to help him, Hendami was poor because he couldn't send the ball past the first defender in the set pieces or crosses, Whittaker looked far out of his depth, McCulloch wasn't that bad but he just couldn't get the ball correctly and never controlled the ball well when he did get it. The defence was a joke and made McGregor look bad. We are in the Uefa cup and we must deal with that......

Papac had a pretty hard shot on goal, problem is that he shot it into the keepers hands.

^ Yeah and his shot was like the only real one on goal because we were so poor.
