Barcelona's Messi: Strange to see Ronaldinho on bench
November 28, 2007

Lionel Messi admits it was "strange" to see Barcelona teammate Ronaldinho start last night's 2-2 draw at Olympique Lyon on the bench.

"Obviously, it was strange to see him on the bench. We know that he is the most important player for us, but now we want him to be in good shape for Espanyol. We are going to need him for that game," said Messi.

"After so much talk in the past week, we have demonstrated on the field that what we must do is to play and to win. We did it on Saturday. Today, we obtained here a good result. Now it is necessary to win the derby.

"It will be very important to begin winning away from home."

On Lyon's tough tackling, Messi added: "It was not directed only to me, but to all the Barca players. We knew that it was going to happen, because they fighting for survival in this competition. The truth is that some of their players went in too strongly."

Barcelona coach Rijkaard: Ronaldinho accepted bench role November 27, 2007

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard insists Ronaldinho accepted his bench-role for last night's 2-2 draw with Olympique Lyon.

Rijkaard sprung a surprise by benching Ronaldinho and starting the game with Bojan Krkic in attack, but it was the Brazilian who as a second-half substitute played a key role in Barca earning the point required to guarantee Champions League progress.

Barca coach Rijkaard, who was also sent to the stands during the game for protesting against Lyon's "violent" tackling, said: "I had to choose an XI and there is a great squad here. There is nothing unusual if Ronaldinho remains on the bench.

"All the players must accept their role. At halftime I asked him if he could play and he said yes to me. He made it clear he was desperate to take part.

"He continues working hard in training. Tonight's decision was not a punishment."

Barcelona were happy with a draw last night so that's probably why he didn't play.

messi should stop making excuses, at the end of the day if your a great player, you can take on anything thrown at you. this is what i hate when people say the english premiership is too physical, cristiano ronaldo seems to do quite well! so did henry. messi is a quality player and needs to man up if he wants to be a legendary player.
