I sympathise with Australia because the OFC qualifying was ridiculous. FIFA knew the Aussies would almost certainly win it every time and as Australia are probably one of the best 32 teams in the world their confederation deserved 1 automatic place. (i.e. Australia are possibly better than any Asian team yet AFC gets 4.5 places while OFC only gets 0.5). So I don't blame them for moving.

If Australia was to stay in OFC then the playoff should be between the winner of OFC and the third or fourth place in Concacaf and not Conmebol. That's ridiculous. We couldn't compete regularly with the 5th place South Australian team, so it's only fair to go to Asia.

There are dozens of reasons why Australia is a rightful member of the AFC. For a start, Oceania is a ridiculously artificial creation, with little in the way of genuine competition. The fact that the .5 allocation is now tagged with the .5 remainder in the AFC shows that Fifa is finally recognizing the absurdity of the former arrangements (ie playing the 5th placed Sth American team).

On the question of geography, Australia is closer to the Asian continent than any other. If you have a problem with this, then consider that the greater mass of the Russian state is in Asia, but the Russians play in Europe. Turkey and Israel both compete in Europe. Papua New Guinea is in the OFC while being geographically a part of asia.

I don't really know why this animosity towards Australia exists. It can only help to improve the competition and it cuts both ways.

That is true but they do belong in Asia and we should accept that. They are part of Asia Pacific and we like having them among Asians because they make Asian competition more interesting. They are so excited about every game and tournament but haven't proven anything impressive yet. Hopefully they will someday :)

If Fifa figured out a system that was fair, we'd have no problem staying in OCEANA and ruling it, as we used to, with the option to make it to the World Cup some other way. The way it used to stand, we got screwed by having to play the 5th place Conmebol team and that usually meant we lost.

iraq was a solid team and just beat korea on penalties, but korea did beat iraq in a friendly just before wc 3-1

i don't know if the news trickled down, but several members of the korean NT are suspended from playing football right now due to banging prostitutes and staying out all night during the asian cup (including the night prior to the iraq game). just goes to show you how like a joke the korean nt treats the asian cup.
