Police ID victim in soccer death
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
11/20/2007
ST. LOUIS -- The 19-year-old soccer player who died in a goal mishap Monday night has been identified as Karrar Abudarb, authorities said.
The accident happened about 7:45 p.m. in the city's Wilmore Park, situated at Hampton and Jamieson Avenues in the city's Southampton neighborhood.
According to police, Abudarb had been playing soccer with about a dozen friends, using a portable metal soccer goal they had placed on the west side of the park's soccer fields.
Abudarb grabbed the crossbar and swung from it, causing the goal to tip over. Tthe crossbar struck Abudarb in the head and crushed his skull, police said.
City paramedics declared Abudarb dead at the scene. Police said Abudarb is an Iraqi.
The park is equipped with goal posts secured in the ground, so, it is unclear why players were using a portable goal.
The goal was removed by workers with the city's Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry.

All I can say is WOW. I was shocked when I heard about this, as it reminded me of a simmilar event that happened in Bosnia. One kid from my town was a goalie, and the goals also weren't secured. The ball hit the crossbar, and the goal swayed back and then forward. Hitting the kid in the head, first knocking him down, and then it crushed both of his middle fingers, and ripped out the nails from both of his ring fingers.
